Weighty issues to be settled with state-of-the-art scale

By Ed Zieralski, SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE STAFF WRITER

June 22, 2003

What's the first thing someone asks a fisherman when he says he caught a big fish? How big was it, right?

Now saltwater fishermen in San Diego can determine the weight of their fish within hundredths of a pound. Shelter Island Pier operator John Hakes has installed a state-of-the-art, electronic International Game Fish Association-certified scale so anglers can weigh their catches.

Hakes said anglers fishing the pier or returning to the nearby boat ramp can settle their "jackpot-type disputes" or see if their catch qualifies for an IGFA world record by weighing the fish for free at the pier.

"We're going to be running quite a few fishing contests for the adults and kids on the pier this summer," Hakes said. "I've always thought the broader angling public could benefit by having an IGFA-certified scale out here."

Hakes said the pier's new 50-foot boat ramp makes it easier for boaters to stop by and pick up bait, sandwiches and beverages on the way out fishing and to weigh their fish when they return.

"It would be great if people could weigh their catch here for tournaments," Hakes said. "I hope fishing organizations make use of it, too."

Mike Farrior, an IGFA trustee based in Rancho Santa Fe, said the IGFA recently opened new categories for world records.

"I'm sure some San Diego anglers will be targeting fish in those categories," Farrior said. "The neat thing about a world record is that once obtained, the record stays with the angler for life, even if someone breaks it later on."

Hakes and Farrior are sponsoring an IGFA Young Anglers Tournament on July 19 at the Shelter Island Pier. There will be tournament prizes in various age categories and free stuff for all contestants. IGFA and other volunteers will be on the pier to help kids.

And now they'll have an official scale to weigh fish. The Shelter Island Pier is at 1776 Shelter Island Drive and can be reached at (619) 222-7635. For information on the IGFA or its Young Anglers Tournament, call Farrior at (619) 548-0164.
