I have shot at hogs at 50yds. Missed 'em, hit em and lost em, killed em quickly, and trailed in the thick brush in the dead of night. Comparatively speaking, I think I have alot of experience in this area. I agree with Speck. Granted an arrow will have plenty left after 50 yds to get the job done, a hog is an extremely tough animal with the heart low, forward, and protected. I have personally seen double lunged shot hogs run a 1/2 mile. Throw in some Manzanita, Chemise, and a moonless night and it ain't no fun. As many of us can attest to, a lost animal is a horrible feeling. It's much more fun to try and close that gap to 30 yds. without gettin' busted. It's actually a great feeling to have been so close and have them run off compared to the gut wrenching feeling of a lost hog. Just my

Congratulations on having the self control to not make a shot that would miss or worse, only wound an animal. If you are not sure of your shot don't shoot. a rule all hunters should follow rifle or bow

The first pig I ever shot was with a bow at just a little over 50 yards. It was a 100 pound sow. All conditions were ideal, no wind, pig broadside just ever so slightly quartered away. Also I was unable to get any closer, because there wasnt anything between me and her except for 8" tall grass. So it was either a 50 yard shot, or maybe no shot. Luckily the pig stayed put eating on something as I shot and it was a picture perfect hit. Entered low just behind the shoulder and exited through meat in the off shoulder. Only bones it hit were ribs. The arrow completely passed through and stuck solidly in the ground behind. The pig did a 20 yard dash and fell over dead. I shoot quite a bit and am confident I can put an arrow where it needs to be at 50 yards and even further, but a lot can happen in the time you release an arrow and the time it gets there. As others have said if you are confident you can hit the spot, then in the right circumstances its doable. If theres any doubt in your mind its best to hold off...

Someday I hope to have an opportunity to do a bow hunt and have that kind of decision before me. Who knows what I would do then.
