I'm from the Imperial Valley,CA. I hunted elk in CO a few years ago and took a raghorn, since then I've only applied for premium hunts and I drew an archery tag in AZ but never released an arrow. Hopefully I score big this year, I'm half way there as I drew a muzzleloader tag for a Bull Tule Elk.

Howdy all,.. I was born and have lived in Michigan almost my entire life.
I've been trying to draw a tag for elk hunting here in my home state
almost from the time they started a elk hunt (1986) and have yet to
be drawn. (lotto system) I have since gone elsewhere to enjoy the
hunt for the elusive Wapiti.

I've hunted them in the Beartooth Region of Montana and in the Clearwater
Region of Idaho. I'm headed back out to Idaho this October.

I have and use 2 different calibers,.. my Remington 700 BDL in 7mm Mag and
my Remington 673 Guide rifle in .300 SA Ultra Mag. I always take both one for
a backup just incase. I also tote a S&W #629 .44 mag sidearm.

Self taught and plenty of helpful hints along the way from various hunting partners.
Still learning, and always will learn something new from someone or some experience.
My first time out was in 1990 in Montana.

My dream elk hunt would be out of a drop camp somewhere in the Alaskan wilderness.

I live in the SF Bay Area I have noticed there are a lot of hunters that go to Oregon. I went to college at Eastern Oregon State and was a deer hunter until I hit Oregon Then I hunted a mountain call Mt Emily right out side of Lagrand and harvested my first Elk I spent 8 years hunting that Mt and was lucky and took a fork my first year and 5X5 my 6th year in between a lot of deer and moved back to Calif. I used a 30-06 until this year and I bought a 270 wsm really like this gun. this year I drew Montana combo tag and have 20k acres of private land in the north west side I have hunted NV, Co, AZ, put my tag in Cal for 5 years nothing but next year I'm going back to Eastern Oregon I miss that country.

I live SE of Denver, CO. I hunt elk on the Grand Mesa in western CO or in NW Colorado. My favorite elk rifle is a Rem model 673 in .350 Win Mag. I have a VX III in 2.5 - 8x mounted on it. I've also taken elk w/ a modern in-line muzzle-loader, a T/C Encore in 50 cal.
I didn't get an elk this last season, but a buddy I taught to hunt took his first, a nice 5 x5 bull and my brother-in-law took a monster 6 x 6.
So we have a lot of elk meat in the freezer for now but I'll need to get one next year.I
Elk hunting is my favorite: we backpack in and set up a camp at fairly high altitude during the first rifle season. We use external frames to carry the meat and head out. Unfortunately we're in a Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) area so we have the head tested before we eat any of the meat. (The odds are very low that they will have CWD, but we wait anyway).

My dream elk hunt would be red stag or elk in New Zealand. Fat chance unless I hit the lottery.

From Beaverton OR and a new guy in here. Been chasing elk since I moved up from Cal back in 97'. Started bow hunting in 99'. Love it and stickin with my 5th bow now which is a 06' Browning Illusion. Have shot two 5x5 Rosies and a few cows so far and many many close calls. Being mostly the caller for everyone else which is the best part about hunting elk for me. Usually I hunt the Wilson, Saddle, Trask, Alsea, and Stott Mt. the first two weeks of the season. Then if not successful, I'll turn to the wilderness of Tower Mt. in Ukiah.

Where are you from and where do you hunt elk?

I am from Butte, Montana and I hunt elk all over Southwest Montana.

Do you use a bow or Rifle? What kind.

I hunt with a Winchester Model 70 Black Stalker in .300 Winchester Magnum w/ a Bushnell 3x9 and a Harris bipod. I just bought a bow and plan on using it for the MT archery season that is all during the rut. My bow is a Bear The Truth 2.

Who taught you how to hunt elk and when was your first elk hunting trip?

I hunted elk for 20 years, every year, and was not able to harvest one till 2007 on a late season hunt. I took a cow and got a bull this year. I have learned from my dad and every one else I have ever hunted with. My first elk hunt was in 1988 near Gardiner, Montana.

What is your dream elk hunt?

My dream elk hunt is being able to havest an elk side by side with my wife.

I am new to this forum. I live in Sierra Vista, Arizona and hunted elk in Arizona and New Mexico.

I used Kimber Montana 300WSM rifle or PSE Mach8 bow which every I get drawn for. I shot one elk 5x5 in NM and one 6x6 in AZ. Both hunts were without outfitters. I will use my bow this September for bull elk in area 27.

Learn from hunting shows and hunting partners during hunting trips. I think I started in 2000. I have been advid upland bird hunter for 30 years.

I think this year could be a dream elk hunt. I seriously thought about getting an outfitter but was told you don't need one during rut. So have couple of friends who will help with calling and hunting. And may be carrying out the elk! I must be too lucky to draw for this tag since I used up my points last year on a late bull tag in area 22 north. A big zero since it was in November. I saw some cows at the waterhole and three bulls on a trail driving to/from hunting area.

I live in SW Montana. I began elk hunting when I lived in NW Colorado and hunted with my college roommates. While living in Colorado, I killed 6 bulls and a cow elk using a .30-40 Krag, a .30-06. and a sharp stick from a recurve bow.

I moved to Montana in the mid 70's and have killed an elk almost every year since. In the late 70's I had my .30-06 converted to a .30 Gibbs and I shot most of my elk with that rifle using 180 gr Nosler Partition bullets. I killed one of my biggest 6-pt bulls using my .257 Ackley and a 117 gr Sierra GK bullet. My best elk is a 375" gross bull from NW Montana that I shot with my .30 Gibbs. The last elk that I shot was with my 7mm Rem Mag and a 160 gr Accubond bullet.

I just finished building a .300 Wby Vanguard, and I hope to shoot my next elk with it using 180 gr Barnes TSX bullets.

elk & deer

I'm a rifle hunter using Sakos in 300wm & 30-06 with my handloads. I hunted in the Piceance Creek Basin of northwestern colorado from 1984 thru 1999 for mule deer and elk but never had the right sex tag for elk.A friend of mine mentioned hunting for cow elk at various southwestern indian reservations in new mexico and arizona.I checked on line and bought an anterless elk tag in 2006 from the San Carlos Apache Rez in AZ for $620 got a young cow, booked again in 2008 but surgery caused cancellation, applied for 2009 got an anterless tag, hired a guide, had to cancel due to a back injury requiring surgery. This year the new San Carlos Apache Indian Rez Chairman created a special chairmans bull elk tag good in any of their zones it sold for $75000,they also have 10 bull elk tags at $30,000 apiece which all sold. They have antelope, coues deer, javelina, black bear, desert & rocky mtn big horn sheep, mtn lions, bobcats, coyotes, badgers, etc .This year a special mule deer tag was given to the Tucson AZ Big Horn Sheep Association to raffle off, it went for $17,500 & is the first time a non tribe member is being allowed to hunt mule deer on the san carlos apache rez.Check Jicarillo,White Mtn,Mescalero Apache Tribes for hunting also Navajo Tribe for hunting opportunities.

Where are you from and where do you hunt elk?

I'm from the Sacramento area, lived here my whole life. As to where, I've hunted elk, either on my own tag or helping friends on theirs, in Oregon, California, Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah, Colorado, Wyoming, Idaho, Montana, British Columbia and Alberta. Only western state I haven't been on an elk hunt is Washington. I think I've hunted elk nearly 3 dozen times.

Do you use a bow or Rifle? What kind.

I hunt elk with whatever I can get drawn for, and wherever I can get drawn. I've shot them with rifles, bow and muzzleloader. Though I've killed them with rifles as small as a .270, I now do all of my rifle elk hunting with a .338 winchester. For a muzzleloader, I use a Knight .50 caliber. Archery is my favorite way to hunt elk, by far. After using the same Browning compound for more than 10 seasons, I finally bought a Matthews a year ago. To me, archery elk hunting during the September rut is the epitome of what hunting can be.

Who taught you how to hunt elk and when was your first elk hunting trip?

I first hunted elk with my dad in 1974, in southern Wyoming. I took a spike on that hunt with a 7mm weatherby (bad gun choice for a teenager!). I got to elk hunt with my dad only a few times, as he passed away when I was fairly young. I used to do mostly guided hunts when younger, so I guess I learned from some hunting guides. Nowadays, we do almost all of our hunting on our own, though we still do an occasional guided hunt, depending on the circumstances.

What is your dream elk hunt?

Wow, there could be several that would qualify.

In the next few years I should get to go on one of them, as I should draw an Arizona unit 9 archery tag. I had that tag back in 1994, and it is like Disneyland for elk hunters on that archery hunt. Big bulls, lots of them and a fabulous place to hunt them. I've hunted unit 9 twice, and haven't killed a bull there yet. On the next unit 9 tag, I'll be hunting the entire season.

An archery hunt on the Valles Caldera in New Mexico would be a dream hunt.

Another dream hunt would be to get to hunt them on one of the Apache reservations in Arizona, like the Havasupai, White Mountain or even the Mescalero in New Mexico. But, I doubt I'd ever spend that much on an elk hunt, even if I could make it through the waiting lists to get on there.

Elk are, by far, my favorite North American animal to hunt!

Tracy, are both of those pictures of the same bull? It's hard to tell since the photos are so different and don't show the entire rack in bottom photo. Either way, that is one hell of a big elk or big pair of bulls! Congratulations.
