Has anyone made ham from a pig they shot. I need an idea of how big a pot I'll need for the brine. I have a good idea how to do it and bacon. I have a big pot I use to make spaghetti or would it be better just to use a clean ice chest and keep ice in it.

Ok, all my gear is in the garage ready to go. On Thursday i'll cut up everything for dinner, load the truck up and try to get some good sleep for Friday.

I'm really looking forward to this hunt, with the weather this week and being nice for the hunt, I'm expecting hogs to hit the ground quick.

Does everyone know how to get there or have any questions on where we are meeting?

What time are we supposed to meet Fri.? 11am right? Don't want to sound like im nagging but I know the first day we wait till later in the day to head out because of the heat but since it's cool it would be nice to get out in the field asap. "I'd rather be out looking for hogs then sitting back at camp thinking of what I might be missing"

Also Brian S you mentioned your legs might not be up to a lot of hiking, We had a guy last year who had a bad hip and George got him set up in a great spot where here could sit, He ended up getting a hog two years in a row. I'm bringing up a ground blind I have, still in the box, if you want to use it your more than welcome to break it in for me.

Adam,
Yeah, we meet at 11:00am. I'll probably get there about 10:30am or so. By the time we get there and get set up, it will be about 1:00pm. We can head out shortly after if you want, it's about an hour hike back there if we take our time. I'm good either way, i'm sure George wont mind us heading out early.

BrianS cant make it. So we are at 11 total.

Ok, so if anyone has any doubts on how to get there. The easiest way is get yourself to Healdsburg, take the Dry Creek exit and head West. You will drive about 10 miles or so, then you will start seeing the dam of Lake Sonoma. The road will have a sharp bend to the left, then go over small creek. The visitors center will be on your right about 100 yards after the creek.

Anyone have any last minute questions? If not, let the lead fly!!!

Reloader mentioned he's bringing a generator, im brining a Inverter and a air pump for air mattresses and such and will probably bring my set of shop lite's, you never can have to mush light when your skining hog's. So if anyone needs some air or needs some power we will have a couple options. also the ground will be wet might need a tarp under your tents....

gotta get everything done tomorrow since Thurs. will be a Family day for me. My 4yr old keeps begging me to go, She want's to see me shot my gun at a Hog. "but not the kind that live on a farm dad" O.K. sweet pee

Fug,

Also shooting a .243 with a .357 in the old hip pocket. Hopefully can stone one and not have to chase it into the bushes !

Hey Mel , you keep some late hours. You a night shift guy also ?

Hi Guys, I've been reading the mail on this post from the start and I tell you I'm as excited for you guys as if I were going myself. I have a trip in the works... not sure yet. What I'd like to know is what type of cartridge (bullet) are you shooting with your 243... Non-lead, weight, hollowpoint? etc. I shoot 6mm
Thanks-in-Advance

I shot a .243 for years, I always used the Nosler Partitions, always held up good on hogs. If your looking for Non lead, go with the Barnes TSX. Factory loads are on the light side though, can't find anything above 85 grains.

Clothes packed, food, sidearm, hunting pack packed, tent, sleeping bag, stove.
Grab water, ice and rifle in morning. Then catch flight on Mezcan Air, flight 101. Less than 48hrs to go. :)

Haven't yet injected any big game with lead yet , but I've killed plenty of paper @ 100 yards using 100 grain factory loads (2900 fps). Killed a bowling pin recently @ 200 yards with same loads , but I can't find any recipes for Brunswick bowling pins ! Purchased some hotter loads in 95 grain (3100 fps) but didn't get to range today to try them out because of storm.

Hopefully will have pictures of pork ala .243 for you next week. Wish me luck .

Truck is packed . Gonna pick up CurlyTail-Hunter in Wrong Beach about noon then we're outta here. I'm so excited I think I just pissed myself !

I like the feel of this group!! Anyone, like me, who doesn't have a lot of hunting expierence this will be a great hunt and learning expierence. 3yrs ago this was my first Big Game hunt and I had Success early. It was a picture perfect spot and stalk on a large group of hog's, I was hooked from that point on. Then last year was the learning year, had a great opportunity to take a HUGE hog less than a hundred yards but my inexpierence cost me a nice trophy. If one thing I learned is PATIENCE will pay off at this ranch. Cant wait to meet all of on Fri. I getting good vibe's about everyone, I'll try not to talk to much, or cut anyone off mid-sentence and anything I can do to help please don't hesitate to ask me, and if I talk loud it's only because I don't hear to well so don't mistake it for YELLING.

See ya'll Fri.

Not much fire wood, but if someone want to bring some go a head. One year we had a truck load delivered for $100, but never really used it.

Adam,I'm sure we will have to start our hike from the barns. After this storm I dought George will let us drive, not even to the gate where we normally start out.
