Was up hiking with my kids in Unit 34 NM for elk and since i had already got a hog this year the kids wouln't let me carry a rifle.
My youngest was carrying a .243. We were in some pretty thick stuff and my 13 year old daughter whispers that she heard something.
I backtracked, changed directions and worked our way into some thick oak/aspen. Suddenly about 20 yards from us we see a boar feeding in the undergrowth towards us. My 9 year old as quietly as he could jacked a shell in and took a free hand shot.
The pig took off right towards us still not knowing we were there. About 10 yards away he veered off and Zach took another quick shot at him. It was almost dark and between the 3 of us we figured out the blood trail that was about 80 or more yards thru some very thick brush and grass. My kids did a great job of finding flecks of blood on grass which is hard even in light conditions.
We found this hog and after a long drag got him home. Zach was pumped as he has been practicing his shooting and had missed a coyote at about 40 yards a couple of months earlier. I was real proud of both of them. This is the largest hog we have got up in these hills and I bet he is pushing 200 lbs.
All you unit 34 elk guys make sure you are looking for hogs also when the season comes.
I can post some pics if i can email them to someone that is a little more computer literate than I am.
