My wife and I spent the weekend up on the Susanville property. The antelope are all over the place. When we drove in Sat. morning, there were three standing on the first hill. There were two out by the homestead cabing and then three more in the southern meadow. I must have crossed the property a dozen times over the two days and each time I saw antelope. Sun. morning, I was driving a slow tractor across and spotted this goat laying down out in the middle of a meadow. I got to within 70 yards or so before it got up and slowly wandered off. When it got up, I saw why it was so slow. It was a doe and she was VERY pregnant.

Sun. we went for a hike along the southern ridge. We had the three dogs with us and were just out for a jaunt so we didn't see any deer but we sure did see sign. The top of that ridge is a major throughfare. And it looked like some of the sign was made by deer that we had spooked ahead of us.

The property fenceline is about 7,000 acres.
There are some BLM plots inside the fence but they are huntable. It is a great place to go to in order to forget the rest of the world for a while. Sure wish I could figure out a way for it to make a living...

I live in Susanville and I can say that it seems like there are alot more antelope around this year than there have been in the past. I hope either my wife or I get drawn. Deer herd seems to be doing pretty good this year too.

Good luck to everyone this season

Hey BigDog

Just wondering is your property over bye Shaffer Mt.? My friend and I were just sitting here wondering where it is, and if you get any waterfowl on your property? We know how loud those birds can be with all that quacking and honking so if that becomes a problem let me know and we would be happy to take care of it for you.

Hey NCahuntinfool,

I drew Lassen period 1 and was wondering if you had any insight for me. I see you live in Susanville, got any ideas where a good place to start scouting would be? Any particular BLM maps I should get?? Any help would be appreciated, thanks. Joe

P.S. Do you know of any camping areas I could check out when I head up ther to scout. I will have my wife and 3 year old most likely with the trailer so I can make a family trip out of the scouting trip.

NCahuntinfool, we do get some waterfowl on the property. Mainly in the spring. If my grant proposals come through, that will change. I hope to turn a couple different places into wetlands. That will bring them in.

I agree with you on the antelope looking good this year. I have seen a couple does with a baby in tow and I saw one doe with two. I didn't know they could have two. Guess it is because of the good wet spring. All of the grasses and wildflowers are still going crazy on the property.

Hi jvle ,

I didnt know you would be tugging a trailer . There is a nice campground right near Bogard Station , within easy reach of those couple herds I spoke of . I did a drive through when I was there and its a pretty nice campground. You might get a trailer into that spot I told you about but the campground would be much easier with a trailer and probably more conducive to the yungun.
You have to taste that spring water I told you about there at the other spot though . Ice cold and sweet as can be.
Best wishes . Be sure to let us know how your hunt goes no matter where you end up hunting .
By the way Big Dog is pretty descent company . I had the honor of bird hunting with him once . Hope it can happen again after all this big game stuff ends.

You bet Brett. Hope to get together with you again. The club opens some time next month but I probably won't make it out there until Sept.

jvle, a trailer would be no problem on my place. I am setting up a camp site but it is not finished. Out house is there and lots of places to put your trailer. Table, chairs and fire pit are there. Still working on the shower and cabins.
