Hi this is my first post. I would like to know if anyone has hunted the San Carlos in AZ for black bear. I will be hunting in unit B on the October hunt. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
My brother and I hunted there two years, maybe 90 and 91. We saw a bear or two each year (big bears) at long distance but never got a shot. Great hunt, though, we never saw another hunter. We went just after Labor Day and it was very hot during the day. Definately more snakes than bears. We called a few varmints during the day; once called a coyote and a bobcat at the same time!
The weather will be cooler in October and the bears should be out longer. Definately go but don't get your hopes up too much and you'll have a great hunt.
thank you... that is different info than I have heard before. I am going, I spent $900.00 on the tag alone. The G&F and B&C both told me that the largest scoring bears in the world come from there.
I have also been told by several other hunters (friends of mine) that I should see several bears a day.
How many days did you hunt there? What unit did you hunt in?
I don't remember the # of the unit, but I'm guessing we hunted about 20 or 30 air miles N of Peridot. I do remember hearing that some of the units further East are better, but maybe it was a matter of tag availability. Seems like the tags were 450. in those days. My brother in Tucson did all the paperwork of getting the tags; I just showed up. It's good to have a smart brother.
We were right up against the Mogollon Rim, and the bear that I saw every day on the first trip would go up on the rim and bed each day. He was an old bear with a lot of gray on his face.
I have hunted quail there all over the reservation. I did see a lot of bear scat but no bears. I have a good friend who is a trapper there. I will put a phone call into him and post again if I hear from him.
I finally talked to my trapper buddy. He says unit "B" means nothing to him. He needs units by numbers and will be able to gvie you some great information.
