i have an A20 tag and bear also...i have heard there are not many bear there except around the twin lakes area which does not allow hunting...i have seen some there while fishing...i will be there for four days next weekend scouting and will let you know then if we find out more
Huntnbob - if you are back let me know if you saw any bear or bear activity and what general area to concentrate on.
Bear season opens during the deer opener in X12 and I am only interested in bear. If I don't have a deer tag I will not be involved in deer. I have never taken a bear before plus it would also be a good trip to head out to the backcountry since i've never been there.
Thanks for all your support and generosity. God bless.
yes...total of four bear around twin lakes campground...one small and one mother/cub...and a nice black...the camp hosts at both green creek and buckeye have had bears in there and mt emma area we saw lots of fresh signs...good luck...hope that helps
During the past 10 years my boy and I have usually seen 2 Sows in the Marine Camp on the opening day of X-12. Sometimes the guards at the gate will tell us where the Bears are located. Those Sows always had 2 cubs with them, and seem to follow the sheep as they graze. During the past 2 years there has been increased military activity, so we 4X4 it over to Three Sisters along the Nevada Border. It's the same story over there. Sows and Cubs, but much more scenic terrain.
Bears a easy to spot with a good telescope. I use a Meade ETX-90 with 1.3 arc seconds resolution. However, it has very fragile Maksutov-Cassegrain Optics consisting of mirrors & lenses, so it must be handled with extreem care. Well worth the effort to get that high resolution at a bargain basement price. It's amazing how many Bears are hidden in the sage under the trees when you are using a good spotting scope. The Cubs are hidden below the sage, so take care.
The way I look at it, as long as I see a Bear it's a quality hunt. Looking at Bear sign on the ground, well, that doesn't do it for me.
thier are plenty of bear in x12, most are in more remote areas. I always find a big bear in the area I hunt. In 24 years of hunting th bridgeport area I have taken 17 bears
was more scouting for deer...these were just the ones we noticed and asked about...had we been looking for bear i am sure we would have found more or more sign...this is the one i want..and pics of a smaller cinnamon also
According to the Sheriff's Dept, the bears get more and more active right up until they hibernate, The B&E calls go up dramatically in Oct/early Nov. The bears will come into Bridgeport looking for food. Especially when the cabin owners in Twin lakes board up for the season and the campgrounds close. They get really aggressive in looking for eats. Biggest bear tracks and the biggest poached bear I've seen were the Birchim creek area. There are gobs of them in the Twin Lakes area but you really need to be well away from there. It's nothing but a huge PR disaster if you wound one and it head down to the cabins.
Thanks for the tip. I will be hunting with my iPhone 4 this season, so I should at least get some pictures. Cabela's came out with some fancy cell phone software with maps and everything.
Here is the boundary of X-12 that will be my guide.
