Dear All,

I have decided to plan a 2009 pronghorn trip to Wyoming for me and my brother. We are both avid California deer hunters but have zero experience hunting either antelope or hunting in Wyoming for that matter. I would be honored if I could get a few tips from you all regarding the antelope hunting basics as well as where to hunt antelope. I am looking for a unit that offers a lot of public ground. Based on preliminary research it appears that units 67, 106, 33, and 47 may offer excellent public land potentials. In your opinion which unit offers the most public opportunity while offering a realistic chance of being drawn? Thank you so much for any advice.

Best,

You can try area 42, there's an HMA there called Commo Bluff. I know the rancher who runs it, he's been in the HMA for 2 years now, has lots of goats and plenty of land. In 2007, we took a 16" and a 13.5" (mine) off of there. My buddies hunt Mule deer there, as far as I know he'll be doing the HMA thing again this year. That's really the only area I have hunted for Antelope, I noticed they have really reduced the tag numbers in 2008. 42 use to be a 100% draw.

I'm putting in for deer in region F and if not drawn, the region D as a second. Where ever I draw, i'll pick up a couple of doe antelope tags.

Try looking into the HMA's that have good draw odds, there's plenty of goats in Wy.

Good luck.

I'm in the same boat, and have never stepped a foot in Wyoming and looking to go in 2009and live in Sacramento. From the research I have done, you need the points to have a good Public land hunt (I have 2). If not you have to fork the extra bucks for the special draw, and your odds will be a little better, but no guarantee that youll draw a good public hunt unit. Best ones are 60, 57, 61, and 58. But in my opinion cant go wrong with 47, 112, 90, 62.... 73 and 32 might be something worth checking out with way better odds and a good mix of private/public.

The easier the draw the lesser the quality of the bucks you will find in public land, but the quantity should be there?.. at least I hope and from what I have heard.

Good luck! Make sure you get maps regardless where you go, private land is abundant-and there might not be fences to distinguish the difference.
