We used the parking lot to go in. We got there about shooting time and there was about 4 other cars parked there so these people new the area and were there at sun up.It was 2 hours of hiking in from the parking lot. About the gps its a Oregon 450 Garmin but i bought the california chip for it. cabelas sells it. it cost $100 and the chip fits garmin units that are capable of the chip. Its well worth the money i found lots of blm land here in cali. already with it.
dang it! another item to put on my wish list. i dont use my gps all to often i normally just mark the truck and throw the gps in the pack. but i really like the map with the boundaries all labeled like that

Good to know. Thought it might be a 30-30. (Just lurking as I shop for a good hog gun.)

Is there an actual parking lot or road/trail?

I always see vehicles parked by a drain/culvert right before the top of the pass

Bit of a late report. Made it out there 12/31/12. At the parking lot by 630am. someone was parked already and hiking in. Hiked all the way to the northwest boundary. Did a few stops here and there to glass and bust brush. Saw one doe, and a large bobcat. Only pig sign I saw was a little bit of rooting that looked fairly fresh, maybe a couple days old

. By the time I came across this it was mid day and in the northwestern part of the area. Did a bit of brush busting and did see some low lying game trails leading into brush. Threw rocks and sticks in the thick stuff several spots along the way but only pushed out that one doe. There was a bit of quail in the area. And for the first time I heard Turkeys clucking and saw a flock of ~20ish Band tail pigeons that were flying around the area. Here are a few more picks from the day.

Close? Is it legit to hunt quail out there? I'm trying to squeeze in a trip before the season shuts down.

Thanks for the information. Just took a look at DFG's site and did not see mention of a closure. I've never been there before (heading out Saturday) - I'm guessing the upper area is better for quail than the lower? I'd like to put a few partridge in the crock pot this season (been having dismal luck getting out, and the weather hasn't helped much either).

You'll see it in the regulations booklet. Some other decent spots for quail that's less grueling to get around is down the road in the valley. O'niell Forebay, and the wildlife areas just east in the valley. I've had decent luck in O'niell WA for quail w/o a dog. Check DFG site for the wildlife areas.

Thank you for the tip. I don't mind the hiking and the hills, but if time permits I'll check out both areas. If nothing else in preparation for next season!
