Hiiidy ho fellow hunters. It's been a long while since my last post but I have been counting doves instead of bikini clad women in my dreams lately. My buddy advised me he is going to be hunting on the "reservation" this year and I was wondering if anyone has any web links to some info on it. He didn't make the arrangements so he is clueless as to permit info, lodging, etc. Any and all help is greatly appreciated. Thanks

Steve

CRIT fish & game number: (928)669-9285. Quail season opens 10/4 I believe. Hunting license is annual, 1/1 to 12/31 and last time I checked was $40.00. Some areas are closed to all but tribal members so pay attention. Limit is 10/20. Used to be 15/30 :-(.
One area where I always seem to run into a rattlesnake or two. Last time I hunted there got out of the truck and darned near stepped on one. They're almost like cigarette butts: everywhere you look!
Plenty of motels in Parker but early in the season can still be filled w/ the boat/water ski crowd so think about making early reservations. Blythe is another option for lodging.
If you ask the CRIT people what the season is going to be like you seem always to hear that it's gonna be good, even in the worst years. But this year should be better if they got the rain that we did here in SoCal. I'm going down the week before to scout the places I usually hunt. The dove hunters who go there should be able to tell us something as well.
The more well known areas can be very crowded. People, if you haven't hunted the area, take lots of water and keep a close eye on your dog for signs of heat stress. It gets HOT!
All that being said, I'lll probably go. One of the funniest things that ever happened to me and my GSP took place down there.
Shot a quail and it fell into a tree. My GSP starts to do her tree climbing routine and out of the tree flies a red-tailed hawk: carrying the quail! My dog starts chasing the hawk carrying HER bird. I was laughing pretty hard until I realized my dog was had become nothing more than a speck on the horizon. I almost caughed up a lung whistling her back to me.

Typically its been very good. We normally get our licenses the night before (Be aware the stores do close early) and stay at a motel in Parker. Blythe is just accross the bridge. The reservation is a long (north/south) and narrow (e/w) strip with quite a large portion of it cultivated. I don't hunt in the fields normally just on the other side of a canal (which typically borders the cultivation). If you go there the day before to get your license spend a few hours driving off the main road.

Best shooting used to be here when the California side became too crowded back in the '60s and '70s. Guess it's just as crowded as everywhere else in SoCal now.

My son and I (when it seems I could hit better) took limits by 06:30 September 1 one year ('82 or '83). We were eating breakfast in Blythe by 08:00 and back in the pool in Indio by 10:00.

One year back in '70s there were nothing but whitewings.

Back in the early '60s the limit was 15 mourning dove and 25 whitewings on the Reservation while the limit in California was 15 combined.

S**t, I must be gettin' old. (But considering the alternative, I guess that's OK).

As a long time CRIT regular, I'm going to skip again this year. It's a little too frenzied for my two little hunters (13 & 10). However, don't forget the CA side of the River. It's not a secret - head up to Bass Point (about 6 miles north of the bridge) and cross the road. The land is all BLM. It won't be WWIII, but the birds fly steady through the morning and evening. We usually head back in about 300 - 500 yards and have the place to ourselves most nights. I'll be out there for the second weekend. Good luck all.

Hey QALHNTR,

I'm a long time regular also, are you talking about the bridge on agnes wilson. If you are the california side adjacent to the river is reservation as well, not blm. Otherwise I assume your talking about the bridge into parker on 95. Parts of that area are reservation also though, particulary those duck ponds.

Your right about the place being a war zone now, I usually don't go for dove either anymore. However the quail and duck season can't be beat

Nah, not Agnes Wilson, that's down by Lost Lake Resort. The shooting can be awesome there though.

Yes, about 6 miles up river from the bridge into Parker. I always have my CRIT license so I'm not worried about crossing over. For the most part, the fields are very well marked.

Hint #1 - head across the road from Bermuda Palms for some great coyote hunting. The Q-tips leave out food all winter long. I also saw my biggest mule deer here.

I fish Deer Lake and the ponds on the CA side. This year we would float tube and get hit on 90% of our casts at the ponds. I haven't hit the ducks there - YET

Thanks for the map PHOnos, it is greatly appreciated. I sure hope I can get down there sometime for dove or quail this year. Unfortunately I think I am sticking local for the opener as my hunting band of buddies can be counted on one finger (knuckles). I put in for a couple DFG hunts and if not I will scout around Perris or Silverwood the week before.

seahonk,

Sorry about posting late and the wrong info in my first post. We normally stay at the Flying J in Erenberg (sp) which is just accross the border
