I made it back out for another shed hunt yesterday and found 6 more fresh ones. Our snow really started melting good this week with the temps. in the mid 40's.
I had been looking for about 2 hours and had seen a couple nice buck still carrying and still hadn't found any sheds.Things were looking bad that I'd find any sheds.
I headed for an area I thought for sure the deer would have been using while we had the snow with the ice crust on top.It was a open south facing hillside mixed with some thich cedar trees.Just before hitting the hillside I spotted my first antler.
A nice 4pt. side, funny how you get a second wind after finding bone.

After taking my "as they lay" pics I no sooner hit the hillside when things started happening fast. The snow was patchy and the area was torn up with fresh sign.I was walking along when I almost stepped on my next find,a small fresh spike with some blood on the base.

After taking my pics on this guy I looked over my shoulder to see a couple antlers laying together. My first matched set for the year laying together, always nice finding them together.
The spike was found to the right of the second pic here of the set not 10yds. away.

I found all of those last 4 sheds all in about a 20 minute time span.I made a couple more passes across the hillside before moving down the hill.Down towards the bottom I spotted my 5th antler of the day.Another 4pt. side this one with some nice mass.

shed26207.jpg

By this time I was about a mile from the truck and struggling from working all night and looking for the last 3 hours or so and that doesn't count the 45 min. roadtrip.I had another area further in I wanted to check out before calling it quits. As I made my way towards this area I jumped 4 buck still packing.

This big 6pt. was another one.I watched this guy for awhile hoping he'd drop right in front of me.

Nice6pt07.jpg

After walking this new spot for alittle bit I spotted tines one last time for the day.

My walk back to the truck was a killer, but well worth it with the sheds found for the day.

Those are all great finds, You think it would be easier to find racks, but I see that you turned up a spike....I'd say that must be tougher than finding a 3 or a 4.

Made another trip yesterday back to the same area I found my last sheds.Alot more snow melted giving me a chance to check the area out better.I found 5 more sheds with only one matching up to the sheds I found earlier.
My first shed was a thick spike antler that some gooey stuff on the base of the antler. When I first found the antler it was soft and wet,now it's dry and hard.Any thoughts?

shed28107.jpg

shed28307.jpg

I almost stepped on my next find while checking out a herd of deer. They can really blend in with a leafy ground.

shed2907.jpg

shed29207.jpg

Finding old sheds is a little easier then fresh sheds b/c that faded white color stands out pretty good.I almost walked past this old one laying next to a patch of snow.

shed30207.jpg

Back in the snow free grass my next one a small 3pt. side that stood out nice.

shed31307.jpg

shed31207.jpg

And last was a mate to one of my earlier finds and giving me 5 matched sets so far for the year.

Here's all 5 sheds from the day.

look at all them left sides. really bugs me when i come home with all of the same side because i know there are a bunch left out there to find.
that spike looks sick. i think he prolly had an infection. that antler that i found that had the skull growth had some yellow pus on it like that but not that much.
dont clean it though. dont want to wash the luck off it lol

I made it back out thursday and then again today.I found 3 sheds each day 5 fresh and one old one.The old one was busted up with the busted tines and main beam laying all together.Looks like a hog of a buck for my areas too.
Thursday there was still snow in alot of my areas. My first area I wanted to check out was snow covered for the most part so I moved to another area. Here it was just the opposite with most the area being snow free.
I was almost finished covering the grown-up field when I found my first antler of the day.A small fresh 3pt. side.

shed3307.jpg

After finding that shed and no more I moved to what's been my prime spot so far this year. It's a huge area and I've hit different areas within this area a couple times already this year.I'd been looking here for about an hour before I spotted my next shed of the day,a small Y shed laying right in a deer trail.

shed34307.jpg

After a couple hours of looking and trying to cover what ever snow-free areas I could find,I decided to call it a day.I was about 100yds. from my truck when I looked down to spot another small Y shed.At first it looked like the mate to the first Y shed found about a 1/2 mile away, everything was a close match except the pedicles.

shed3507.jpg

Here's the 3 sheds for the day.

sheds333435.jpg

After getting rain all night thur. night washing away most our snow I had to make another trip friday.I was back to the same spot I searched the day before.I was hoping to find the mate off a small 4pt. side with some great mass for a little shed. Before hitting the area I found the first half I searched an out of the way spot the deer sometimes use.About half way through this area I found a big and old busted up 4pt.The end of the mainbeam,a tine and the brow tine were all busted off and laying there with the antler.

shed3607.jpg

shed36207.jpg

It was a little bit before my next find.A nice little 3pt. side.

shed3707.jpg

After this find I hit two wooded hillsides I've seen the deer hanging out alot and where I found a fresh shed 2 trips here earlier. Both areas were a bust so it was back out in the more open area I was in earlier. As soon as I spotted this next shed I knew it was the 4pt. side I was hoping to find.

shed3807.jpg

shed38207.jpg

I looked for another couple hours after my last find and came up empty on anymore sheds. Here's a pic showing that busted up shed and total sheds for the day.

This is the set I was hoping to pair up today.

Great going Deershed. How many deer would be in the area you are looking? There must be quite a herd of deer there. Whats killing all the deer in the area?

There's alot of deer in my area then again some of these areas I search are big too.I could park in the morning and not return to my truck til dark and still have plenty to cover the next day.
I'm not sure what you mean by,what's killing all the deer in my areas? My dead buck count is down this year big time.

I'd say 80% have dropped in my areas now so it's just a matter of finding out where.I went out today and probably had my best day of all time as far as quality goes.I only found 2 antlers for the day,but wow!!You could throw these in Predator 1's pile and they'd fit right in.

Here's my first find for the day.

What a great set

. Awesome tine length and symmetry. When he puts some mass on this year he'll be a monster.

I knew if I didn't post this pic too it'd be hard to see the true size of this set. This set will probably be my best matched set found ever,he's a monster now.
<
If this buck makes it another year he'll be bigger then Maryland's present state record.
The other smaller sets are my matched sets I've found so far this year.

I visit another forum and they have shed scoring contest. The winner of each contest has to post a shed for the next contest.I'm hoping to use these sheds if I win one soon so I was keeping the score quiet.
<
I will say they would make B&C.
