Found 5 more yesterday before this last snow came.First here's a couple more pics of the boy with the big set.He was with me the day I found them and mins. before I found them had him move to my right in the middle of our line.He was on the end and I wanted to keep better track of him so I had him walk to the right of me.If I hadn't have done that he would have found the first antler for sure.
Ok,Yesterday I covered an area I already looked a couple times with out finding a shed.I moved my search out from where I normally jump the deer every trip there.I'm almost positive I have another shedhunter searching this area.
My first find of the day was a nice white fresh antler that stood out like a sore thumb.
It was a while before I found my next shed.It was on a small hillside with a couple good trails going through it.
Mins. later while giving the area a good search for it's mate I spotted what looked like an old antler buried in the leaves. After taking my pics I was surprised to find it was a fresh antler from this year.A nice 4pt. side with some great mass for a little antler.
After finding this last shed I backtracked hoping I could find it's mate.I walked a flat up above the hillside before I found it.I went back to check over the edge of that hill going down the other side.Sure enough about 200yds. from the first one I found the other side.
While standing directly over top of this shed it blended in so well it was hard to see.
My next and last for the day was while I was walking another side hill out.The hill was steep and I found this one just after I hit the flat on top.
Not a bad day when I really wasn't expecting to find any at this spot. Here's a pic of the days finds. You can see the set has some good mass for the size of the antlers. It's my second biggest set for the year too.
Great collection deershed.
OMG.Do you blokes have shed comps in the US?
Also, what ways do you guys score sheds?
The same way used to score full heads?
Or is their a different method for sheds?
Or do you modify the B&C to suite sheds?
Just wondering.I wouldn't mind putting the tape around a few and didn't know weather i should use the Douglas Score(fallow scoring).Or a modified version of.Cheers.
We have friendly shed contest here on a couple different web sites.First place bragging rights for a year, mainly a way for everyone to share their season and finds.
The North American Shed Hunters Club has a record book for sheds.North American Shed Hunters Club
I don't know about the pro part, just a bad case of sheditis with me.
I found 3 more yesterday,2 fresh and a old one.The squirrels did a number on the one fresh one that looked to be a real nice 3pt. side.
I headed to an area I see tons of big buck sign and every year come up empty on the sheds.I always thought it was my 2 legged compitetion beating me to the sheds. Two years ago I found a matched set off a 8 pointer with some stickers and unbelievable mass. They were fresh drops and the rodents had already found and starting working on both antlers.I think the rodents in this area figured out what sheds are and search them out special.
My first find was in a thicket that looked like it was laying for a few years.I didn't bother with a "as it layed" pic.
As I entered my rodent infested woods I spotted an antler laying just inside the woods.A nice fresh 5pt. side with a nice crab claw at the end of the mainbeam,
Another pic
I then followed the edge of the woods line up finding another antler about 150yds just inside the woods again. The rodents got a hold of this one first.
For the next couple hours I did a grid pattern search through the rest of the woods coming up empty on any more sheds. The whole time remembering my many shedless days in here and that fresh chewed set found in here 2yrs. ago.
Here's all my finds for the day.
I made two more trips since my last update, the first trip was a 3 shed day and the second a 10 shed day.Between the 2 days I've doubled my old shed finds finding 8 old ones.I was planning a trip today, but now were getting hit with sleet and rain expecting to change over to snow.
Both trips were in areas I've already made a couple trips already this year.I was trying to look for mates for singles I already found. In the one area I had 10 singles and know there's a couple deer I don't have any antlers off yet.
Day #1. In this area I think I have some serious 2 legged competetion. In the high percentage areas here I've been coming up short on the sheds for the last 3 or 4 yrs.On this trip I hit the surrounding areas here that extended out from the prime area.
My first shed was an old one half buried.
After wandering around awhile I spotted my second shed of the day,a fresh 3pt. side.
While doing a better search in the immediate area for it's mate I almost stepped on this old one.
Day #2 was back in the area where I've got 10 singles without mates and know of a couple other buck I don't have any antlers off of.My intentions for the day was to stay out of the wooded areas here and hit the grassy hillsides where alot of my earlier sheds came from.First I wanted to check a wooded hilltop where I knew a high racked 6pt. was hanging out.I didn't find any sheds from the 6 pointer, but I found a little old shed.
I just started working the grassy hillside bordering the woods I wanted to stay out of when the skies got cloudy and overcast.Seems every time I go to search this area the sun is bright and the ground cover of leaves is heavy here. The wind seems to be always blowing here too so with the overcast skies I switched to searching the woods.
Things got fast for awhile finding my first one here with in minutes,a fresh 3pt. side.
Minutes later and 100yds later another one, this one an old antler.
I no sooner started walking after this find and found another old one.
Things slowed down alittle after my last find,it was about 20 mnis. later and a couple passes across the hillside before I found this one.
After that last find it put my day's finds at 4 old and one fresh antler.I saw the deer using these woods every trip here this year and knew the deer used this area alot.I was started to really worry where the fresh sheds were from this year.About that time I crested a small rise and spotted this one.
Here's another pic of the same shed,my best for the day.lol
I made a couple more passes across the hillside when the sun came out again so I decided to move out of the woods and hit the hillside I originally planned on searching. As I was about to enter this area I came up on my first cripple of the year.It was a shedded buck that looked like it got clipped in the back legs by a vechile, both back legs were busted at the joint.SAD!!
With only a pocket knife and the deer dragging himself along pretty good on his front legs I didn't have much success doing the right thing. He looked pretty healthy considering and moved pretty good, but no doubt infection will still get the better of him.I chased him about 200 yds trying to corner him or see what would happen and he ended up in this creek.
I don't know who was more tired the deer or I,the temps. were in the 70's.I didn't want to push him any harder knowing I probably wouldn't have got to finish him off anyway so I left him there in the creek.I'll be back in that area again so I'll check and see if I can't find him then and see how he's doing.
After leaving the deer and hating having to,I started up the hill to where I found the last sheds I found here.
I no sooner got to the small flat where I found 5 other sheds a couple weeks ago when I found 4 more in about 15 mins.It was one of those times you can't pick them up fast enough.
First was a little spike antler.
Then a fresh 3pt. side.
Then the next 2 were old sheds.
I still haven't checked to see if any of these match sheds I had,a quick look says no.I also found 3 turtle shells this day leaving 2 lay that were old and chewed.
that is a sad sight, my uncle took a management buck this year in NY, it was the tail end of the season, and we at camp had seen a lame 4pt that must have been hit by a vehicle, his health faded rather quick, so my uncle took him the last week of the season. The back half of the deer was jellied beyond human consumption. I hope this guy doesnt struggle too badly. As for your finds congrats and keep them coming
Truly awesome! Is this a pretty typical year for numbers for you? Too bad about that little guy in the creek...it's always hard to witness one suffering like that.
Happy hunting and keep the pics coming
That is one of the most impressive shed journals i've seen this year, great finds. And that 10 ptr... OH my gosh! What a buck, hopefuly he isn't on the downhill next season, what a trophy, congrats and keep em coming!
Kurtish-numbers wise I'm doing about average.I've been losing alot of shedding grounds over the last couple years and it's a handful of hot areas this year that's really helping me out.My hotspot for this year has given up 31 sheds so far and I know there's still singles out there that need to be found. This area is not some little back 40,but a huge area.
I made it back out today finally and tied my best day for sheds for the year finding 10 sheds.Found a couple nice turtle shells too. It's too late for "as they lay" pics" but I'll give a sneak preview of one of the turtle shells.
It amazes me that maryland is a 1/2 day drive south and you have snappers runnin around and I'm well under snow still.
but its going and there are bones to find... now if the sun would just come up. (6:15 am)
