Game officials: Drop in illegal game kills since poachers’ conviction
9/12/2003
By: Associated Press
(Raton-AP) -- Game officials say the recent conviction of two poachers has led to a significant drop in poaching reports in northern New Mexico.
Dozens of deer, elk and antelope were poached in the area from the late 1990’s to 2002.
Raton prosecutor Leslie Fernandez says photographs used in an elk poaching case showed Zach Romero and Calvin Parson holding up the head and antlers of a trophy bull elk.
The photo was taken in July 2001, one day before a pair of headless trophy elk were discovered near Raton.
Wardens, who last year raided the San Miguel County property where the 24-year-old Romero lived, seized nearly three-dozen deer and elk heads or antler racks.
Romero was sentenced to probation and fined $12,000 after pleading guilty.
Parson turned down a plea deal and was convicted of two wildlife felonies. He was sentenced to 15 months in prison.
