This morning I drove out to a ranch that is part of a club I belong to. As I got to the gate, two guys in a truck were parked just inside. They asked if I had seen the pigs in a corral by some out buildings. I told them no, and let them know we could not shoot around the corral, but when the pigs got away from it they were fair game. I told them that the pigs were super spooky and we should park right there and sneak over the hill towards them. I let them know that I would give them the first shot, and then I would take whatever was left.
It took them a little time to get ready, and finally we started towards the area they had seen the pigs. When we crested the hill the pigs were no where in sight. We walked to the edge of the corral and one of the guys started walking down a drainage looking around. I told the other guy that I was going to go in the other direction. I hiked approximately 300 yards down the canyon and spotted a pig walking in a flat. I hussled down to where I could get a good look at him, and saw 10-15 pigs. I snuck down to a tree and set up 50-75 ards from them. The first pig that came through I put the cross hairs behind the shoulder and dumped it. A nice 75-85 pound eating pig (no pictures).
The two guys came up a couple minutes later and one did not seem very happy that I had shot. My question to you, should I have tried to contact them and get them over there? I felt a little guilty since they had seen the pigs first, but in my experience pigs don't stick around very long. The pigs on this ranch have basically been nocturnal and only one other pig has got shot this year.
So, let me have your honest opinions!

Wild pigs in a corral?

Mikey88,

They go in there to scrounge around for anything the cows have missed, and to flip the cow dung over looking for goodies. In my experience wild pigs will eat anything that does not eat them first, including grain, alfalfa hay, cow dung, dead animals, etc..:skeered:

The only problem I see, is the guy with the long face.
Don't feel bad because the other guy is jealous. He should have felt happy for you.

I think you're fine and the other dude was jealous. The last time I tried to be nice like you and waited for the guy to come up and the pigs jetted out of there. Next time I shoot first. Those guys were no where near you and the pigs. You did right.

I thought you were saying the pigs were in the corral and off limits until they escaped. I was picturing something else!

You did the right thing and put down a hog which most likely would have gotten away if you tried to contact the others. Its not like you shot one right out from under them!:dancin-red:

The arraingments you had with them ended when the hogs had already left the area of the corral. You guys had no plan beyond that. They were separating from you to find the pigs. At that point they made no attempt to create a new plan. Good for you, not throwing away your chance to go find them. I would have done the same thing. Job well done.

Hell no.
You gave them a chance. If you would have waited nobody would have
gotten one.
Congrats.

Agreed.

Do you think if THEY had found the hogs they would have come and gotten you so you could take the 2nd shot? Nope. The hogs weren't where they said they were, you split up to hunt them. When homeboy split off, did he say they would come get you when they found the pigs? Probably not. At that point, it was simply 3 guys hunting an area that had fresh sign in it.

Shoveler... sounds like you made a good call. The original hogs weren't where they started, that's the end of round one. Round two ended up in your favor. Nothing wrong with that.

Shovelerslayer, you did exactly what every other guy on this forum would have done. You shouldn't feel bad at all taking this pig. Keep one thing in mind; If these two guys didn't want you to get involved in their hunt, they should have just kept their mouths shut and let you pass on by. Once they invited you to take a look, all bets were off. Enjoy the pork! :two cents:

Thanks for the responses. I just wanted some other opinions on the situation. I try to be ethical and fair. One thing I need to repeat is that neither of the other guys got mad at me or made a stink about it, it was just obvious that one of them was not happy that I had shot without them. Once again thanks for the replies! This forum is always a good way to get honest feedback.:JHO rocks:

I think what you did was perfectly fine and well within proper edicate. that being said. the only thing I would have done differently is have the Bigworm drag it out and gut it. Thats only cause I love him. not in the same way as my sister or lurediver but more of man hug kind of way.

also I must add this for future posts.
