This morning I drove out to a ranch that is part of a club I belong to. As I got to the gate, two guys in a truck were parked just inside. They asked if I had seen the pigs in a corral by some out buildings. I told them no, and let them know we could not shoot around the corral, but when the pigs got away from it they were fair game. I told them that the pigs were super spooky and we should park right there and sneak over the hill towards them. I let them know that I would give them the first shot, and then I would take whatever was left.
It took them a little time to get ready, and finally we started towards the area they had seen the pigs. When we crested the hill the pigs were no where in sight. We walked to the edge of the corral and one of the guys started walking down a drainage looking around. I told the other guy that I was going to go in the other direction. I hiked approximately 300 yards down the canyon and spotted a pig walking in a flat. I hussled down to where I could get a good look at him, and saw 10-15 pigs. I snuck down to a tree and set up 50-75 ards from them. The first pig that came through I put the cross hairs behind the shoulder and dumped it. A nice 75-85 pound eating pig (no pictures).
The two guys came up a couple minutes later and one did not seem very happy that I had shot. My question to you, should I have tried to contact them and get them over there? I felt a little guilty since they had seen the pigs first, but in my experience pigs don't stick around very long. The pigs on this ranch have basically been nocturnal and only one other pig has got shot this year.
So, let me have your honest opinions!
