The south side of hwy 178 is D9. Tehachapi is not in D8 at all. Hunting that area with a D8 tag could get expensive!

I take it back its d10 there. I looked at the junior hunt again. It's been 20+ years since I purchased a rifle tag. Ao is so much easier and a premium archery tag every couple of years.

Thanks for all the info. It is a new area for me. I know a little bit about the area from fishing there. It is very beautiful country. D7 is just like any other area. Like someone who stated in the post you have to figure it out. I hunted X9a last year and my son shot a small buck, because we hunted hard. Thanks again for the info. I am looking forward to give it my best.

D7 is a migratory area. Some deer never leave the lowlands, but the majority migrate to high country after winter and stay there until the weather drives them down. If you know anyone with private property down low, be sure to check with them. Otherwise, hunt high and away from the crowds (if possible). If we actually get an early snow, find a migration route and stake it out. Best of luck!

I generally hunt above shaver. But I have also been known to hunt above bass lake. Sory I won't go int anymore detail because it is overcrowded enough. The thing I have found is that it doesn't really mater what location you hunt as long as you learn the area really well. Ex. Say you know the deer are in an area with a certin type of plant you may know 10 other areas that have that same plant. Or if one area is getting lots of presure where will those deer go to escape.
Bass lake thats where i heard big foot one time scared the crap out of me and my buddy.

What is cell reception like in general in these remote areas? I am mainly concerned with the possibility of hiking in a day or 2 before opener and camping and then some loon starts a fire and my ass is in the middle of nowhere. If i see or smell fire then its probably too late to easily get out

if you get on a rise or hill that far back do you have a chance at some reception?

I hunt in D6, not 7, but it is similar country. To make a call, you have the right service, find exactly the right spot on the right road at the right time, hold hour head just so, and stick your tongue out. No. farther. Now talk fast, because the moon is changing phases.

Service for Verizon has been excellent for me. I use my smart phone for the GPS and mapping.

In northern D8, cell phones did not work well. I know a few places that AT&T works in the foothills and just below and just above Kings Canyon Park --- but 99% of the area the phone is useless. A year or two ago Verizon started using their new tower on Park Ridge, so I switched to Verizon as it gives me great coverage at and all around my cabin. Wife likes it because if we are out hunting, her phone works if she stays at the cabin and ours will probably work where ever we go. With AT &T we had to drive almost two miles from the cabin to find a small area where our phones usually worked.

I have AT&T and coverage in D7, at least the part I hunt, is very bad. I tried my son's Verizon phone from the same area and it worked fine. Guess it depends on your provider.

I get no coverage almost everywhere I hunt! I have used Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile. I guess that means I am in good areas. I have a few places with seismograph machines and if I stand underneath I get reception.

Spot on... The only variation I know of is someone with permission to hunt on private land in the foothills, those bucks are permanent residents and there are some bruisers. Check out the Jordan buck from a few years back, what a whopper...

bought my D7 and a bear tag tonight at turners , whats the story on my need for an ADVENTURE PASS ? Do I need it to hunt the D7 area or the Palomar Mtn area of D16 ? Research gives me a clouded message and asking the counter ladies at turners got me nowhere, they were nice but were not concrete in an answer so they told me don't buy it, find out for sure

Don't need an adventure pass for D8, so I am sure one is not needed in D7. D16?

I believe the adventure pass is only required in the southern areas, not in D7 or 8...

D7 is good if you know where to hunt. You have to also be prepared and willing to hike a certain distance away from your car or roads to see the bucks. Tons of does everywhere but if you hunt the right area, you're bound to see a buck. I was able to put my younger brother on his first buck ever last year and I was also fortunate enough to tag my first ever bear as well. D7 will forever be my hunting grounds.
