heaed out in 1 hour , don't think internet works where I am going, hope to report back next week that I had a great time and no chaos with other hunters , going to a spot that should be low traffic , good luck to all , I got a Honda element blue SUV with a worn out Jesses sticker on it and a TAZ Devil and Big bear sticker on back window , if you see me .................... honk , maybe you will spook a deer towards me :smiley-mouse:
Good for you to remind folks that there are no deer in D7! Wish i had a D8 tag but my wife told me the tags sold out. That is to be expected since that area always has a higher success percentage. I just got back from setting up camp in D7 with my wife and she said only a fool like me would hike with a gun in such a desolate, ground squirrel infested, lifeless area.
Matter of fact, wifey went on a tour bus, guided, tupperware party marathon in D8 last week and says the trip was repeatedly delayed by huge deer herds migrating across the prime tupperware roads!
I did manage to bag a couple ground squirrels with my copper loaded 10mm rounds though. Got some older ones though so they were a bit tough.
I'm headed up this evening after work. Sleep at the trailhead tonight and hike in about 3 miles tomarrow. Hope to get a little glassing in tomarrow to see what I can find. I'm hoping it isn't too crazy...
got up there real late Wednesday , setup camp in camp ground around 6900 feet , scouted next 2 days early from 6:20 am to 10 am then back to suv to check GPS notes I took with google earth and info from friend, then scouted again from 3 to 7 pm , both days I saw a ton of DOE and many fawns with does, saw only 3 deer I could not make out the head of but was sure on 2 that there was no HUGE rack ....................... Saturday AM saw more doe in , then sat afternoon the weather shit all over me, I thought it was going top be sunny and clear the whole time, I left shit out at camp and whatnot , so I hide under a group of low pines all afternoon til 7pm and again see more doe and fawns , I get back to camp and have to run a rope around trees to get a tarp over fire ring and get a fire started , then I get some diner going on small gas grill , and THEN I go into tent to get dry clothes on and wear a trash bag as a raincoat, well ,,,,,,,,,,, F me ................ goddam tent with rain fly let rain in, clothes damp, sleeping bag wet - damp , I let off more F bombs over the next 20 minutes than ever before , so I change quick grab sleeping bag , toss in truck grab food and sit in truck for 90 minutes running engine and heat most of the time, found Dodgers - Padres game on radio , barely , at least so I had something to do besides sit there and be pissed off over my carelessness , rain n hail stops so I get out and roar up fire more and hangs clothes around it and open car door and let ball game play, I go to sleep and wake to iced over clothes ................. sunday was nice , more doe and some fawns , had 1 doe-buck at 200 yards that I glassed and swore I was seeing long high skinny spikes but deer had brown grassy area behind it , I could not verify in the 15 seconds it was viewable , so Monday am i decide to mix it up and slow walk - creep down log roads, not something i thought i could do earlier due to dryness but after rain forest floor was soft, I see more doe , i walk up on a buck brush area with tons of trail in and out of it, i watch it for 15 minutes and then i see a big body deer ............... hearts pounding ............... 30 yards, waiting for head to come up .............. it does ................. its a doe .......... minute later 2 fawns pop out .............. crap ............. they walk away and i creep to a hiding spot and sit there 3 hours ........... nothing else shows .............. i move to an area i saw more trail ............ i sit and wait, fresh tracks after rain ........... i am hopeful .............. then 3 guys, 2 with no gun ......... WTF is that called? ........ walk near me yacking like they are at a bar, so i move .................. frustrated i move closer to truck, its midday , over in another spot i wait, I see this black ball 150 yards away in the woods , its a bear ? i got a tag, head pops up ................... its a firkin COW ! blue tag on ear and all, holy shit ! ............................. now i am just thinking its time to drive the 8 hours home so i go back to camp, pack up, and leave, i planned to hunt til noon Tuesday but cut it 1 day short ............................ i think i found the D7 doe-fawn day care, saw 6 or 7 different doe- fawn groups ..................... cant believe i let myself get caught, pants down, in that rain storm , dumb move by me , i have not camped out in 15 years, rusty i guess , i checked weather Tuesday night from 3 sources none had rain but that must of changed
so work sent me to texas, been unable to hunt D7 again , I have d16 tags for San Diego county , am I better off hunting here or going up to d7 if it snows? the drive to D7 is LONG but its a nicer area and less hunter I think at least where I would be in d7 , in d16 I am near palomar with the army of others
If it snows in D7 it can be epic. Just need heavy snow fall for about 24 hours. Don't look like anything is on the long range forecast weather wise but I'm hoping something changes. This full moon is killing us as well!!
