Other than copy/pasting from the article that I linked you haven't provided any hard data or first hand experience to support your ramblings, only hear-say and your opinion presented as facts.

To start a thread where you throw out ignorant blanket statements about the capabilities of an entire platform and round seems immature and shortsighted at best. Again I'm saying this as a guy who has no interest in ar's.

I think there's a lot of variables that you haven't considered and I encourage anyone who has an interest in hunting to pursue it, even if it means using an AR-15 in 223 because they already have it. Maybe they don't have the money to get a bolt action in a caliber 243 or larger, I want to see the tradition of hunting continue forever in our country and trying to make people feel dumb for using a 223 does little good to help pass on the sport that we all love.

outside of calibers and ballistics, do the AR guys feel super awkward walking through the woods with a machine gun? i've always found tacticool ARs to be the gun-version of a fedora and cargo pants.

Machine gun? As in: kakakakakakakaka? You mean that one?

I think we can all agree it's not how big it is, it is how you use it! Wait, where have I heard that before?

depends... is that bigger or smaller than the datdatdatdatdatdatdatdatdatdat?

LOL

Seriously, an AR is just a tool like your hunting rifle/bow. Gets the job done in the hands of experienced hunter. Not meant for everyone. You should really "stick" with your primitive weapon. You know...the one that wounds a lot of critters.

I have to agree with you I haven't stated a lot of facts I guess. You pointed me to an article that agrees with me. The platform is fine. If you choose the correct caliber. I just can't even imagine using a caliber as small as the 223. I have to agree with you as well on protecting the heritage. You put up a good argument. I thank you for that. I'm just afraid that some of these hunters with ar's in 223 are going to kill an animal and never find it. Yes I get that it's possible even with a mag. Anything will work if your close enough. I believe in ethical killing when hunting.

I'm sorry but as an archer and a hunter if you can't get closer than 300 yrds, you're a shooter not a hunter......well... whatever, I prefer my bow, my mod 94 lever win saddle sights, then my 270 scoped, 7mm,22 250, etc, but to each his own, where's my popcorn

And yes, if you're proficient with your round use it...but a lot of people out there don't spend time shooting to become good, knowing your gun vs balistics and how to use "Your gun" is the most important key. More game has been taken with stick and string or 22lr, education and practice...teach our, new hunters ethics.not big rounds! Still can't find my popcorn!

Maybe I missed it, I didn't read every post in it's entirety, but I don't think I heard anyone mention hydrostatic shock. On the smaller weight bullets, hydrostatic shock is greatly reduced or eliminated completely. Without getting into semantics, it seems to me that the real story hear is that a .223 isn't the most ethical deer hunting round available. It may possibly be the worst legal choice for a hunter. I know everyone has their moments where they can place a bullet in some miniscule grouping or killed an animal in its tracks. .22's kill hundreds of humans every year, but cops don't carry .22s. I don't think a reasonable argument could be made that a .223 is better than any other legal caliber. Can it work, sure. But why chance it? I also have to say that I don't believe a .223 round is capable of penetrating two shoulders at 300 yards, I'd have to see that one.

Hydrostatic shock isn't necessary to kill deer and I'd argue isn't necessary for ethical kills (does archery equipment cause hydrostatic shock?). It is necessary if you want to drop deer in their tracks with a shoulder shot at 300 yards.

Again I don't even have a dog in this fight as I don't own an ar or 223, I'm arguing against the blanket statement and what came across as condemning those who use that platform and round. I'm not saying that all ar's firing any factory 223 round is capable of ethically killing deer, I'm saying that there are situations where the two are capable.

Read the article I linked, they don't recommend the 223 for everyone and they list a ton of factory ammo that they don't recommend but read what they say about the heavier barnes TSX and TTSX bullets, they may not cause hydrostatic or hydraulic shock at longer ranges and drop a deer in its tracks but they are capable of adequate pass through shots. Also, there's no rule that forces one to shoot deer through both shoulders, there's lots of guys that neck shoot all their deer, I don't, but there are many who do.

Regardless of where this thread ends up, I still have no interest in an ar or 223. For deer I'll stick with my Kimber Montana in 270, I've got a hot load worked up for it firing 110 grain tipped TSX's, one of them was devastating on my deer this year.

Here is a fact the op did not do much research in fact he has stated several time that its his opinion. The simple fact is that 223 can kill deer no problem. Whether you want to use it or not is up to you. Dont go and start and argument on here over your opinion please it makes hunters as a hole look dumb. Facts prove 223 can kill deer. Facts show that ar 15s come in many different calibers from 17 cal to 50 cal. So if you have a question please ask but dont argue your opinion over fact.

I agree with Solus...fact vs opinion, my OPINION is if you can't get closer than 300 yrds you need to go to hunter school, spot and stalk. But I am thinking of a mini 14 nice tool for yotes and when shtf, just sayin.

I had a mini 14 and i like my ar15s better. The mini 14 was accurate up to about 150. My ars are a different story. They are good 400-500 yards. In different calibers too. If a 223 can take a pig down with the chest armor then it can take down a deer.

I've seen a 22-250 due a number on a buck it fell like a sack of potatoes blew through both shoulders it was with a barnes x bullet I think 55 grains the exit shoulder was toast the shot distance was around 200 yds

So is this thread a bash on the .223 Rem or AR15's or just an ignorant post by an uninformed poster?

Are you saying any .223/.224 cartridge shouldn't be used on deer or just the .223 rem? What about a 22x284 shooting a 90gr Berger? Will that have enough energy to make you happy? What if it's in a bolt gun and not a semi auto? Will that get your approval?

It's crazy how deer in the last decade have gotten so hard to kill! Must be something in the water...

Agreed. The op on his opening post sounds like he is bashing ar15s but then changes what he said because someone pointed out that there is different ar15 calibers. Guy sounds misinformed to me

its all about bullet placement for me witch is why i shoot a bolt gun. as long as the AR guys are following the 3 round rule and not going out there with a 10 round mag and letting them fly at a running object (aside from coyotes) I say run what you brung and be safe.
