its all about bullet placement for me witch is why i shoot a bolt gun. as long as the AR guys are following the 3 round rule and not going out there with a 10 round mag and letting them fly at a running object (aside from coyotes) I say run what you brung and be safe.

Unless something has changed recently, the DFG/W doesn't regulate round count for rifles. If it's legal for you to possess you can hunt deer with it.

I'm pretty sure it's always been 5 rounds for rifles and 3 for shotguns???

The 4 round law is an old law that was removed a very long time ago. When i took my hunters ed class 20 years ago, the law was 4 rounds in a rifle but now its if you own it legally you can use it for rifle.

If it's legal to own you can use it in California. That means pre-ban if you own it legally you can use it. For shotguns three shells for waterfowl and upland . Non game mammals shotgun is 5+1 .

I use 223 as my go to rifle for deer in so cal. I only keep 4 rounds in mag on my ar15. Deadly accurate shot placement is all you need. Never had a buck go more than 20 yards. I always find myself defending my rifle choice on these deer. If you don't like it and you're not comfortable with it, don't use it. View attachment 86648

i apologize for the confusion my fellow hunters i was moving things around while posting and made a typo. i didnt mean to post "AR guys" just "guys are following the 3 round rule" i was pertaining to upland game. and ment to say " and AR guys are not not going out there with a 10 round mag and letting them fly at a running object (aside from coyotes)".

The bottom line is that we all have a huge responsibility of being safe while out in the field and most of us hunters want to do right by making an ethical shot at our game we seek to harvest. sure there may be a small amount of bad seeds in our hunting communities that are willing to take unethical shots. but there are far more responsible ones that want to preserve our right to hunt and will continue to the right thing time and time again to prove to the people who are slowly but surely chipping away at our rights that not all hunters are the same.

I feel the 223 is a bit light for deer. Have I ever shot deer with a 223? Yes I have,2 of them one droped in his tracks shot in the neck the other one was shot behind the shoulders. It went about 50 yards and fell over dead.
The problem with the 223 is all the factors that come into play with hunting. They can easily end up causing a wounded and or lost animal. I know this can happen with any cartridge but you are more likely to recover game that has been hit bad with a 30-06 than you are with a 223.
As for the AR15 platform why not. They are just about as accurate as a off the shelf bolt action.

Have you recovered any of the spent slugs? Just to give us an idea of the terminal performance.

Before you bash me the op, please read the post. I never bashed the platform I mentioned the ar 10 as a good choice. The platform is fine, the 556 223 round is silly to use on deer or larger. It's a joke.. I figuring out that some of you get an idea in your head and run with it.. I know your deer may drop with a perfect shot. Yes it's possible. But when that deer gives you a split second and he's high and wide. I know your taking shots never to find them. I also know it's not everyone and some of you do the right thing. Facts this and that. Miss informed I understand ballistics and velocity and know more than you guys can give me credit for. I have a ar-15. No way no how would I use for deer.

You keep digging yourself in a deeper hole. Using a 55grn ttsx it will go thru a deer out to 300yds. Shooting one in the chest with the same load will drop that deer. Hitting a deer with a 416 Rigby in the leg will not kill a deer. Not sure why you are bashing this round? Are there more capable rounds? Of course!

In fact, state of WY just approved this round for big game hunting last year. Granted you have to use 60grn or heavier projectile. So get used to it...

Perhaps you should read the title of your own thread?!? If it wasn't to bash AR15's then why make it the title? Why not put .223 rem and bolt guns?

LOL

Seriously, an AR is just a tool like your hunting rifle/bow. Gets the job done in the hands of experienced hunter. Not meant for everyone. You should really "stick" with your primitive weapon. You know...the one that wounds a lot of critters.

noooo don't like my sig to my thoughts on the subject. I'm using a 30-06 pump-action remington 760.

I definitely do not think the AR is overkill or anything like that. I agree with it being a tool... and it just seems more tooly than others.
