I have learned over the years hunting tejon, that I am not much of a hunter.[/b]

But you're becoming a heckuva mountain climber.

Glad to see you guys made your minimum of eight. It's a helluva deal at $400. Housing, all meals, and 2 1/2 days hunting at Tejon. That's as cheap as it gets for a quality hunt, and good times with good people.

My story is that I did this same hunt in June '06 with Bearclaw. I took my first archery hog, my favorite bow kill to date. Nice to come back to clean sheets and a home cooked meal, and a shower. It was 95 degrees and we were sweatin' by 7am. That mid-day shower was a big plus. Not to mention, the beers were cold too. Jump on it. If you've hunted the south side, you're in for a change. All the roads are in the bottom of Tejon Canyon. You have to hike up, not down. Get up high before sun up. The advantage is that the recovery is much easier than on the south ranch. Just give your hog a kick in the ribs and he'll roll to the truck. Also, the other half of the ranch is flat. You can still hunt the creek beds. They bed in the tall grass. It's fun. I don't think you'll need snake boots in Feb. But, in June, I was the only one without snake boots. Scary. One guy saw 11 snakes in one day. Awesome place.

Yeah, I expect it's gonna be a lot different from what I'm used to on the South Side, but I also expect I'm gonna like the differences!

Real beds, someone else doing kitchen chores, and a hot shower and real bathrooms... and of course, all that is on top of the fact that we're hunting Tejon Ranch. Oh, and don't forget that we'll have one of the Tejon guides in camp to provide direction and assistance. Can't beat that!

I expect we're gonna have a pretty good time.

Is there a link to a map of the archery only area anywhere?? I have only been to Tejon once and it was on the South side so the report above from One Track is good news. I hate dragging up hill. And since apparently Speck says it's his turn to kill one by the road, I may have a big drag in front of me

Never been their myself. I am assuming that we will get a map or directions of some sort with meeting times. I am pumped. I haven't hunted since I came here in 2003. Just retired at Edwards AFB last Dec after 25 years in the service. Got a bit rusty with the bow because the demand for archery is rather low here and the wind is pretty bad. I currently live in Lancaster and there are NO outdoor ranges. Only range that is close is on the base and I am 1 of 2 members. Range includes haybails scattered all over so I bring my own target and set it up against a rotted bail. Works! I should be ready! Should be a great time!

Cazz, If you live in Lancaster you've got the entire desert for target practice... LOL.

Hey BDB, I've really done a lot to work on my snoring... Yep, I've gained at least 20 pounds so my snoring is louder than ever..........Sad to say.

Excellent news about hiking up hill first... I like lugging my big butt up hill in the dark when it's nice and cool. I can't wait to see old friends and meet new ones and have some good ole fun.

Well, that leaves me two choices Orso, ear plugs or enough Tequila so it won't matter. With Speckmisser along I suspect the ear plugs won't be necessary

See ya'll soon. Oh and as of now I am bringing 2 making the total 10. A buddy of mine who is not a member here (yet) and also BigBubbaDaddy here on the site, though he doesn't post much these days. That said no checks have been sent in as Speckmisser and I are meeting on Monday for lunch and he will give me the forms then. I am 100% but can't really speak for the other 2 until I am holding their checks!

I'm stoked and can't wait to get out there again

They have a huge map in the bunkhouse, but there aren't any small handouts that I know of, I took a map of the North side that they sell for the PORs but they don't show this area.

The ranch hand should be able to point you in the right direction, the best plan is get high and spot em early like One Track said, the flat areas are good for anytime but of course early and late are best.

Since that hunt starts after dawn Friday I would drive around as soon as they cut ya'll loose and learn the ranch, get an image in your mind as good as you can and then pick an area and hammer it for two and a half days. Try and hunt each area once and you will just break the boots in better, it all holds hogs.

Be careful, I won't name names, but one twoesome got off the area and didn't even know it, for the most part if you are driving to the top of anything you are off the archery only area, the only road that goes to the top was near Cherokee something or another, otherwise the roads would end at the base of the "hills" or not even halfway up.

If you aren't on top early you are way late, they "should" be more active during the day than they were in June, but they will still be heading up after dawn.

we got lucky when we got One Track's hog, I just happened to spot them from a was off while somebody was all giddy watching a doe and fawn and we headed down, he get in on them and made a great shot, then we just allowed Sir Isaac Newton's law carry it the rest of the way past all the lion areas.

I missed mine but will be back to collect her after she gets above #300, #275 is just too small for me.

What I meant in my e-mail was a map or directions to the Ranch where we are to meet Friday. I am not too familiar with the area.

OK, we've managed to fill this hunt.

If anyone else is interested in archery hunts at Tejon, you can contact the ranch directly to see what else they have going on, or you can wait until the first weekend of June (weekend after Labor Day) to go with the JHO group again. I currently have that weekend blocked off, but if I don't get some interest in the next month or two, I'm going to open it up to a local archery club and let them have it.

Of course, we have plenty of space open for the regular JHO POR on Memorial Day weekend. You can bowhunt then, or use a gun.

Time to start packing and planning!

More detail about where we'll meet up, times, and all that other good stuff is forthcoming, as soon as I've spoken with the ranch.

Hey Cazz, if you go to this URL, you can see the map that shows which exit take and how to get to the ranch office. I assume this is where we will meet and do the paperwork part, but that is only an assumption. I talked with Speckmisser today and he is going to confirm some things with Tejon this week or early next week and I'm sure he'll post up the specifics like what time to meet and where.

OK, most of the apps are in and paid, although I'm still looking for a package from Steve's buddy.

I spoke to Barbara this morning, and it's looking good. She was pretty busy, so we didn't get to chat much about the condition of the ranch, but I'd hazard a guess that it's in great shape...albeit a little dry for this time of year.

So here's the deal.

We're scheduled for check-in and orientation at 1100 on Friday, 02/09. I need everyone to be there by that time, as she has to do check-in for another group shortly afterward. If there is any reason you'll be pressed to make it by 1100, let me know NOW.

If you guys would like, we can plan to meet for breakfast prior to going over for the check-in. Flying J right there at Lebec has a decent breakfast buffet, and we usually seem to have a good time meeting there. Let me know.

Meals are provided at the cabin, and will be cooked by the Tejon representative. I hope he's a good cook. You may want to think about any extras, such as beverages, snacks, etc., and plan to provide for yourself there.

There are beds at the cabin. However, Barbara recommended that you bring along a sleeping bag. Orso, there's a skinning shed out back where you can snore all you want.

Hope everybody is practicing and sharpening those broadheads. Let the countdown begin!

I just sent an e-mail to BigBubbaDaddy to see if he sent in the app.

I know I am stoked and my group will be there on time but not at the breakfast since we are pulling out of the Bay Area at about 5:30 or 6 that morning.

Okie dokie then!

Apps are sent to Tejon. Should be processed end of this week or next week. Checks usually clear right before the hunt, so watch your accounts.

I'm gonna plan to be at the Flying J at 0800 Friday morning. I'll look for whoever wants to drop in for the buffet before rolling over to the Ranch Headquarters around 1000 or 1030.

NOTE: We'll actually be doing orientation at Barbara's house, which is right up the road from the hq. Everybody needs to be at the Ranch HQ by 1050. We'll caravan up the street to her place, do the orientation, then form up and head to camp.

I heard that their last POR actually worked in eradicating all the pigs, maybe ya'll should just drink and sleep in, no need to get tired chasing things that aren't there.

Good luck guys, Speck I hear that ranch don't like goats, I mean Rams, so be careful, don't want to hear about the Dodge getting sideways on a road in a valley.

Easy now...

Have winch, will travel! Bring it on!

Darn shame they killed all those pigs. Oh well, contingency plan is already packed and ready to roll.
