JHP Antelope Hunt In WY

Anybody up for a JHP antelope hunt in WY this year?

My odds at drawing a tag this year in AZ and CA don't look good so WY is an option for me just to get to hunt antelope finally.

Any suggestions on what zones for a small group. Doesn't have to be trophy area, just a decent chance at a buck or two with some boot leather burning in between.

Younghunter, is there room for a couple more fer-in-ners in your state if you don't draw? Put the rocks down, it was joke.

Sure you are welcomed here in WY! From what you mentioned I think the best unit for you would be 96, its a draw unit but the odds are around 17 percent, they don't sound like the greatest odds but they are pretty good for a do it yourself public land unit. The unit is huge, a good population of antelope, and I'm sure if you work for it you can get a good goat. In this unit usually a 14" buck is a keeper. But there is some bigger ones too, just not as many as the trophy units. Its almost all public land, and it opens Sept 10th which is on a wensday so there will not be as many hunters out opening day. If you decide to put in try to put in as a party, that way if you draw all your group draws. And if you draw I can take you guys out the day before or the first day and show you the watering holes, best areas etc. The unit is only about a 5 min. drive from Rock Springs and then you can start hunting. Fun hunt if you draw!

Sending in my money for WY. in the next couple of weeks wife and I are going for 4-6 weeks my first choice is in a harder draw with 2-3 being in a 100% area.

I'm putting in for the reduced price($60) doe antelope hunt. You can get two tags. I don't care much about horns, just a little meat for the freezer. I think I'm putting in for unit 94 or 100.

I will have to start looking at WY info. Anyone know right off hand if they accept CA Hunting License for safety training verification or do they require the safety certificate or anything else? Thanks.

Ernesto, you sent me an e-mail earlier suggesting units 57, 58 or 60. Are those units lower draw odds or higher than the units you just mentioned?

If a person was to apply for one of the high draw areas, how much are they looking at for trespass fees?

I've been able to get some info. You definitely need a safety certificate. I need to call then and make sure a CA safety certificate is good. If they check you for it, it will be in the field. So, you need to carry it with you. In their literature, they mention that applying as a group increases your odds. I guess they figure the less apps the better the odds. I couldn't find how much people can apply as a group.

My friend and I were think of putting in for WY this year. I would love to go out and try a shoot a speed goat. If the opener is sept 10th we will be in Alaska hunting grizzly and Moose.

I recommend those areas for you because those are the trophy units, the higher draw units are still public land so there is no tresspass fee required. The draw odds for 57 58 and 60 are way lower.

I'm not sure about your safety certificate, it probably does meet the requirement for hunters safety, that is you went to classes and took a test identifiying animals and gun safety.

What would your #2 and #3 choices behind area 96 be as a backup? At least for that quadrant of the state?

For an alternative I would put in for unit 92 and then 90. Usually though your second and third choices do not matter unless those units typically have leftover tags.

I might be up for a ranch hunt for $25/person per deer/antelope on a 15,000 acres plus ranch--lots of public land around there too which includes a campspot with fresh water. I've got the contact info. If you'd like it, PM me.

Draw odds are basically 44% only if you opt for the $300, 25% for the regular buck antelope tag and deer tags are about a 75% chance...Unit 32 antelope and unit 66 deer (D tag).

Also, this ranch is in a reduced price antelope tag zone--those are guarunteed basically and only $60/tag. It's probably just a 1 or 2 day hunt to fill tags...more if you draw a buck tag and are holding out for a better specimen.

If someone could bring a packhorse for a cow Elk or be willing to hike downhill an hour with a pack, it's easy & free cow pickin's on a ranch that charges about $4,000/bull with about a 1,500 head herd-- we'd have free access(not published on their website)--tag costs $200 this year. It's about a 3 mile hike uphill to where the elk are...you'd have to apply for unit 48. You can still get a tag if you don't draw...PM me for info on that.

Antelope runs thru the first week of deer season and rifle elk season (about 3 hrs away) starts the week before deer season.

CWD has been discovered in the deer unit tho. The ranch has 30-40 or so hunters on it for opening week of deer. Otherwise, there are not many there at all.

Called Pete and the deer numbers are way down due to the drought but there are lots of 'lopes.

Well, found an area with 100% (barely) success on the $200 buck antelope tags and a slam dunk on 100% draw odds with the $300 tag in unit 43 (mostly private lands unit).

Only the first 130 folks to show up get to hunt on a first come, first serve basis. Reduced tags are also available for this unit. This is a state run deal. I don't know if there are folks turned down during opening day (Sept. 26th..might be worth camping out a day or two extra beforehand)...would have to investigate further.

There appear to be other ranches like that but I don't know what the odds are on the first come, first server deals. There are other ranches in Unit 37 (no reduced price tags in 37), 38, 44 that have 100% success on buck antelope--state run, free deal.

110 - unlimited number of hunters allowed - 100% draw odds for buck antelope...another state run deal - Pitchfork ranch. 109 and 111 have unlimited doe tags available right next door but it's mostly private...a lot of gps and blm status map work required to find/hunt the smaller checkers of public lands.

Units 46, 48 , 68, 69 , 82 have ranches participating in a state run deal (free access) but draw odds vary from 10 - 40%.

Now, I am looking for a 3rd choice with near 100% draw probability for my party of 5. Our first choices have draw odds under 20%, but lots of BLM land and lots of bucks. We are hoping to find a 3rd choice with bunches of public lands, as our budget won't cover tresspass fees if they are very high.

So, are you saying above (state run) that the lands are public or there is public land in these units? If not, do you know about trespass fees?

Sorry for the confusion...I'm an engineer and not the clearest writer and I have a bad habit of not proofing what I post.

Your second choice won't count if you're putting in for a trophy that's mostly public lands. Wyoming looks at all the first choices for a unit. Go to Wyo's game & fish website and look at the demand index for non-residents--both regular priced and non-resident special (the $300 tag).

Then look at your second choice unit. What are the odds? If it's not 100%, you have 0% chance of drawing it as a second choice.

That being the case, there are only a few units that you have a shot at drawing as a second choice...Wyoming looks at all the first choices, then all the second choices submitted by everyone, then all the third choices.

California used to line everyone's application up and look at their first choice, then second choice, 3rd. Now even CA looks at all first choices first, then all the second choices, etc.

There are only several units one can draw as a second choice (buck or any antelope tags). And even fewer units existthat you have a chance putting in for the third choice.

When I get home to my other computer, I'll send you info that I've PM'd everyone else who's posted their interest in a JHP hunt.

Wyoming posts info on ranches open to the public on their website. Not all ranches open to the public are posted--some are 'word of mouth.' And the biologists, officials and game wardens don't give out that information readily based on my experience. I 'stumbled' into a good state-run cow elk hunt that's not published 2 years ago.

***Scratch the proposal I sent***. I just called Dept. of Game & Fish in Wyo and also the office in Laramie. The Monolithe ranch got hammered with a lot of hunters/high harvest so they're going to a limited draw this year or primitive weapon hunt....probably not a good bet.

The person I talked to @ HQ recommended getting the landowner lists from the units with mostly private lands that had 100% draw ODDS in the NE corner of the state. He also recommended not paying more than $100-$200 tresspass fee for a tag. Good luck.
