Its been a few weeks now since we been back, but, this has been my first opportunity to post about his hunt.

Josh, was one of the lucky Jr.s to draw a tag for Lassen County either sex antelope. We knew it was most likely a once in a lifetime tag so we did our homework. We talked to my brother who lives up there and spoke to several ranchers, we got in contact with Bigdog who has a beautiful piece of property that we paid a very fair price for access to and we spoke on the phone and then met in person with the local DFG guy for the area.
We scouted all day the day before the season opened and spotted a nice buck on Bigdogs place. We also spotted several other prospects on BLM land as well. We glassed up 17 antelope total in 5 different areas.

Opening morning Josh decided to have us start on some BLM land about 5 miles from Bigdogs place. right off the bat we glassed up several. We spotted a couple of bucks about a mile off that we wanted to get a better look at. we found a road that got us a little closer and started following a fence line road. We spotted a decent buck far ahead on the fenceline with a doe and 2 smaller bucks out in the adjacent field.
The buck laid down and was a ways off but we pretty much thought we knew where he was.
after some strategizing we decided to walk the fenceline since that was the closest thing to cover around and see how close we could get before he jumped up. The mosquitos were killing us. we got closer and closer. the doe got up. we kept walking i wanted to get Josh the highest percentage shot I could.
then the buck stood up. the plan was to as soon as we got close enough i would tell josh if the buck was a "shooter". The buck stood up and i thought he was a decent buck and i knew josh would be happy with him. I told him he was a shooter and by the time josh got a bead on him he took off towards the other 2 small bucks out in the field.
I made a bunch of yelps and he stopped at 150yards. Josh got his bead on him and one shot and he dropped like a rock. 8:00 am and his hunt was over.
The mosqitos were unbelievable in this area.
Josh was happy but he still likes bird hunting better. I dont get it.

By the way, Bigdogs property north of susanville looks like an excellent piece of deer property. He is in the process of doing many things on it that will only make it better. We saw a couple of coyotes that just stared at us while we scouted. I most likely will put in for that unit next year.
Pics will follow soon.

Paul. How old is you son and what kind of rifle did you use?

I'm taking my son (14 by then) next year where I hunted this year. I'm trying to decide if I should let him use his .243, or let him start getting used to shooting my .25-06. He's a heck of a shot with the .243, but I am so comfident of that .25-06 when it comes to Pronghorns. I'm thinking I want to let him start shooting it so he will be confident with it come next year.

Anyway, I can't wait to see the pictures.

Josh is 15. he shot a 7mm08 and shot a 120 grain bullet. I could not find the bullet and think it may have disintegrated because if found several pieces of it.

it did kill him quick.

If i had to do it again i would have bought the 243 more choices in bullets.

that 7mm08 kicked more than my 270 when using 140 grain bullets.

With the 120 grains it does kick much less.

The 7mm08 is a model 7 remington Jr. size.

Good luck with your son drawing next year.

I was up at BigDog's property about three or four weeks ago. I wonder if your son shot the buck I was watching that day. He was hanging around on the south end of the valley for an hour or more by himself.

paulc,

Any photos. Sounds like you and your son had a great hunt. My son will turn 2 this October and my 2nd son is due January 2005. Can't wait to get them out camping, fishing, hiking & hunting.

Congrats to your son Paul. Glad he got his first one so easily.

I was up to the property all week last week and saw both antelope and deer. Saw several coyotes also. One of them is now taking a dirt nap.

If my project keeps going as well as it has, the property will be full of game in a couple years.

Paul,

Congrats to your son on his first antelope! If you son likes birds when you come out to WY next let him shoot a couple sage grouse! It was a good year for them this year. Good luck rest the season,
