Its been a few weeks now since we been back, but, this has been my first opportunity to post about his hunt.
Josh, was one of the lucky Jr.s to draw a tag for Lassen County either sex antelope. We knew it was most likely a once in a lifetime tag so we did our homework. We talked to my brother who lives up there and spoke to several ranchers, we got in contact with Bigdog who has a beautiful piece of property that we paid a very fair price for access to and we spoke on the phone and then met in person with the local DFG guy for the area.
We scouted all day the day before the season opened and spotted a nice buck on Bigdogs place. We also spotted several other prospects on BLM land as well. We glassed up 17 antelope total in 5 different areas.
Opening morning Josh decided to have us start on some BLM land about 5 miles from Bigdogs place. right off the bat we glassed up several. We spotted a couple of bucks about a mile off that we wanted to get a better look at. we found a road that got us a little closer and started following a fence line road. We spotted a decent buck far ahead on the fenceline with a doe and 2 smaller bucks out in the adjacent field.
The buck laid down and was a ways off but we pretty much thought we knew where he was.
after some strategizing we decided to walk the fenceline since that was the closest thing to cover around and see how close we could get before he jumped up. The mosquitos were killing us. we got closer and closer. the doe got up. we kept walking i wanted to get Josh the highest percentage shot I could.
then the buck stood up. the plan was to as soon as we got close enough i would tell josh if the buck was a "shooter". The buck stood up and i thought he was a decent buck and i knew josh would be happy with him. I told him he was a shooter and by the time josh got a bead on him he took off towards the other 2 small bucks out in the field.
I made a bunch of yelps and he stopped at 150yards. Josh got his bead on him and one shot and he dropped like a rock. 8:00 am and his hunt was over.
The mosqitos were unbelievable in this area.
Josh was happy but he still likes bird hunting better. I dont get it.
By the way, Bigdogs property north of susanville looks like an excellent piece of deer property. He is in the process of doing many things on it that will only make it better. We saw a couple of coyotes that just stared at us while we scouted. I most likely will put in for that unit next year.
Pics will follow soon.
