This is a big deal at our house. In 15 years i have never drawn anything but otc tags in CA. (thank God for out of state hunts)

My son has now drawn a Antelope tag in CA!!

I must admit CA does have some pretty good stuff for Jrs. Josh has gotten 2 bucks in So. Cal in jr hunts, has had some very cool Jr duck/pheasant hunts.

Next step, does anyone know this Lassen area well? Any help will be appreciated. Will call the DFG in the area this week.

Whooya!!

Wow congrats to your son . Can't wait till my kids are old enough to apply for the jr. hunts . I'm sure you can give him some great pointers on field judging them . Didn't you take a B & C buck in Wy. a year or two ago ? Hope you guys have a great hunt together .

Sheep shooter, by all means take advantage of the programs CA DFG offers for Jrs. They have some good oppurtunities.
I was lucky enuf to get a B&C lope in Wy 2 years ago and i got a 16" incher in NM on public land last year with my muzzleloader.

As far as judging antelopes, the more you can look at in the field the better. Look for mass. But shoot what looks cool to you.

Paul,
Congrats to your son. I hunted up there some years ago with a friend. Basically, anywhere east of 395, out of Susanville as you head north is good. We hunted an area called 5 springs and the surrounding areas of Skeddadle mountain. I think Shinn Peaks to the north of Skeddadle mountain. As you head north on 395 out of Susanville, towards Alturas, you'll head past the prison. Continue north, and once you start going up a small hill, and cross over the other side, start looking for railroad track crossings. You can actuallt see these on a topo map. Right after the crossing, there will be a dirt or gravel road to your right. Take this turn, and hunt anywhere north or south of this road. On this dirt road, 5 springs will be to your north and Skeddadle will be to the south. This road will go for about, oh, 5 miles or so and then you'll be in Nevada, so be carefull. Good luck to you and your son. You should see some good bucks up there. If I held this tag, I would hunt the north side of the dirt road towards 5 springs. I think you can pull this area up on topozone.com

Thanks Mel.

This should work out for us nice since my brother is working on a Ranch up in susanville so we will have a place to stay. Hopefully we can get up there and do some scouting.
thanks again.
