sage, this type of thread makes me wince and I think you know why. I'm not going to hide it in the closet so no one will see. You suggestion we sanitize it makes me shake my head also. The intent is someone may learn from their mistakes.

Those comments were also made before Pucci tried to justify his "shooting style" with ridiculous excuses. I consider them more as questions and not comments

I for one stick by my comments and would post them again on a simular thread.

I also stick by my comments that those are a couple of very nice lopes.

For some reason I don't think Pucci will rethink his hunting methods and probably has already passed that onto his son. What a shame.


SAD , VERY SAD !! That you generalize and try to put someone down , and their CHILDREN . Should the shot have been taken . NOPE but get off he high horse .

The first year I started hunting I missed ( yes clean misses at deer standing broad side ) LOTS of bucks , just got too excited , later that year when I finally connected it was something I will never forget . Will I teach my kids to shoot long range at running animals , NOPE , but I also wouldn't want them reading the above CRAP trying to belittle their father and themselves .

There's nothing wrong with disagreeing with people and pointing out what was obviously VERY poor judgement , but you went a bit far I think . I USED to think a bit more of you and your site .

Sorry I havent been able to respond to your posts is because of trying to kill a buck up in X-4 near Susanville. Anyway I read you posts and has far has Im concern your all entitled to your own opinions. Has far has raining on my parade or fighting a loosing battle that I am not. I didnt come on this site for that. I tell it like it is and thats that. By no means has this tanished anything. If you dont respect what I said thats fine. I only wish that spectra 17 would get a life. It would be very easy for me to find negativety from your comments but Im not going to do that. Why you ask?? I wont LOWER myself to you PERIOD!!! I want to end this on a positive note and its one that concerns my son Joey who shot the big Antelope. He and his buddy went up to X-4 with both having tags. On Saturday night the 8th of October he spotted a nice 4x3. He was ready to take the shot but thought twice about it because his buddy has never shot a deer. He told his buddy to take the first shot even though buck fever set in big time with his buddy. Took the shot and nailed him. My son gave up the opportunity to shot his biggest buck to date and only his third. I asked how he felt about his decision and he said he no regrets what so ever and that it reminded it of himself when he shot his first buck. Ill be posting pictures on the mule deer forum. Fasten down you chinstrap if you insist on trying to glorify your type of hunting and shooting. It's been shouted down here since this forum opened and I'm sure members will continue to tell people it's not appropriate for good reason. Same in the duck forum where the skyscrapers are shouted down for good reason.

I get the ass about spray and pray cuz I've had jokers ruin long stalks by blazing away at what I was stalking from over 1/4 mile away only to drive the animal into the next county. I've also watched in disgust as other hunters have had the same thing done to them.

Try thinking about your fellow hunters out there, that is if you really care about what you're doing. If just killing a lope is all you're about, knock yourself out. Just don't expect a pat on the back from many of us who have to put up with that nonsense in the field.

My posts ARE NOT meant to belittle you or your son, my intent was to show there IS another way to do it. I'm sure the others also feel the same way. I know I didn't take the criticism from my Dad and uncle as them belittling me, they just pointed out I needed to rethink what I was doing. Constructive criticism ISN'T a bad thing, it helps us reevaluate what we do.

Congrats on the antelope

This is an interesting thread and I hope it stays open as this is something that should be discussed.

I cannot offer much advice on this topic as I've only been on 30 or so successful antelope hunts but my one tip I always tell people regarding antelope hunters is:

"if they say they couldn't get close to the antelope, then they never really tried to in the first place"

Good luck in future hunts and Im glad you guys harvested your antelope.

Now that's a good story. Congratulations to your son's buddy on a nice buck and to your son for giving him the opportunity.

You guys are tooo fickle. I remember being reamed about jumping on some guy for taking a 600yd shot and everyone sided with him...now you dont like a 450yd running shot...please.

Both are just silly. There are so many things I dont care for in this story I just dont think my fingers are up to typing that much. I do hope that this trip has seasoned the men a little and their next trips will be both more productive and less dramatic. RG

I've hunted Likely Tables and took a VERY nice buck at about 255yds with one shot from my .257WBY. I have a picture of him on the site somewhere just search for my name. I waited him out several times and let him run off several times only to follow and ambush him at a later time. Thats hunting to me. I played my game and he played his...and he lost. Sometimes I lose. It can be hard...but thats what makes it great. RG

Hey you guys need to stop turning this into a lecture session. If you are going to make the decision to shoot at an animal you better be ready to shoot to kill it. The reason gun makers make magazines is for follow up shots. All you one shot wonders need to chill out. I would shoot at a running deer, antelope, or elk anyday. As many shots as it takes. If it takes just one that is the best thing but one should never be afraid to empty a gun. Especially on open range hunting: Let"m Roar. I think you pessimists are just jealous that these guys were drawn for LT and not you. Great bucks Pucci

Just stumbled on this thread! I agree with the notion of not deleting this thread or other similiar in nature. This is a nice example of "coaching" questionable hunting style/ethics. If this thread was deleted then other hunters would be missing out on an interesting topic.

Ive got a good friend that i hunt with who owns a ranch. He lets nearly anyone on who will ask. About mid season he let a guy onto his property to hunt mule deer. He said he had spotted a group and stalked up as close as he could, at which point he shot 6 times. Before he left he came back and said he didnt get one. Three days later my friend was checking cattle and ended up finding three dead deer. If you take a shot, check for blood, regardless.

I also hunted with another guy one time, we got within 200 yards of a group of antelope and they spotted us. They took off running and my buddy hopped up and took a shot while they were on a dead run. He hit it in the hind quarters (ill spare you the gory details), we followed it for nearly a mile and a half before he could get another shot. Terrible judgement on his part, we could have easily lost that animal. Needless to say we dont hunt together anymore.

Ive taken numerous antelope and if your patient and really care about a humane kill, you can get within 200 yards of any antelope without them knowing your there. granted there is the chance that you'll get made...its called hunting.

If your kids arent all that experienced at hunting, there is no way they should be taking shots out at 350+ yards. and running? i better not start.

Im all for you posting the pics and being proud of your kids (and that left one is dang nice, i would guess just an inch or two under book- interested to see the actual score), but the story to go with it is what gives hunters a bad name (regardless of the outcome, the details provide plenty of reason for even non-hunters to be upset). and the story of your son letting his buddy shoot, thats awesome, probably the best way to form relationship/friendship with someone is by taking them hunting and sharing in the success. Praise him for it all you can. But in no way does that justify the antelope hunt!
