Craig Fritz, CBH 2nd V.P Hunting called me yesterday and told me that he scored on a 14 1/2" buck yesterday. He said that he had it in the back of his P/U and was heading for the meat locker. Rough scored at 76". If any of you guys know Craig, he deserves this buck, great guy. He's sounded like he was on cloud nine. More details and photos later. Ed F

Modocer,

Fish and Game could make much of their annual budget giving tickets during the antelope season up there. When I hunted there I saw a guy in a Ford Explorer "herding" a group of about 20 goats towards a bunch of other hunters. Disgusting. Never saw a game warden there the three days we hunted.

Makes it tough to hit one with an arrow when they are running at 60mph, especially out of the bed of a pickup. Craig was up there by himself and has a camper shell on his truck. Plus if it was him I kind of doubt that F&G would let him keep the lope. Ed F

This is outstanding news! Given all the work Craig does promoting the sport of bowhunting it's about time he got drawn and has a sucessful hunt! Even if he only worked 10% as hard as I hear he does for us bowhunters, we'd still all owe him a big congradulations!

Don't know the whole story, just what came over my fire radio, (The county sheriff and the local fire depertments use the same radio repeater channels up here).
What I heard was, someone called the sheriff office to report that a group of hunters in a black Ford ranger were chasing a herd antelope near Big Sage Res. The Sheriff officer that responded cought these yahoos in the act. He called dispatch with there name, ID. ect., and asked for a DFG warden. About 5 minutes later dispatch came back on and said " the fish and game warden REFUSES to respond at this time." That was the last that I heard.

I thought that it was the job of the wardens to respond to a fish and game violations. But to flat out refuse to come really got my dander up. After a year and a half without a warden in the entire county a warden was just transfered in. I was hoping that he might stop same of the poaching and other violations that is going on in this area. From what I have seen, we were as well off without a warden.

I have seen bow hunters chase of antelope with vehicals here for 25 years. Antelope have come into our property so exausted that they would stand with there back humped up, there head almost touching the ground with there tongues hanging out. These "hunters" have been so blatent about ther actions as to complain that they have damaged there truck while chasing them. We have reported them more time than we can count, we have even taken pictures of these actions, and the violaters are yet to be cited. It leaves a person with a bad taste in ther mouth toward bow hunters and the fish and game wardens.

Modocer, Thanks for the info and sorry to hear how bad the problems are up there. Talked to Craig and he shot it in the valley on a ranch. No vehicle was used in his case. Believe it or not this antelope is growing. Put another tape on it and it is around 78". I'm beggin for a pic to share with you guys. Ed F

First I do not consider it hunting to go chasing the lope with a pick up. It is unethical in my mind. Is it illegal. I do not think so as long as your not shooting from the road.

I hope the guy in the Ford Ranger did some major damage to his truck. When I was up there, except for the main road I do not think I could drive more that 10 mph.

Last year in X9A, I did not see any F&G wardens. If they are called by numerous people, they might get the idea something is going in with a particular group of knuckleheads. Call them, it is not like you are going to bother them. They are paid by what comes out of our paychecks.

Really nice lope.

Me and my son are headed up to susanville for the Jr. tag he pulled.

How did a story about chasing antelope with a truck end up in this thread anyway??

This guy posts a great hunt story and pic and it gets hijacked with another topic.

Great Goat~!

Yeah, DFG is often very unresponsive. I encountered some yahoo shooting @ turkeys that I was trying to call into my setup off of Lake Hogan with a small caliber rifle--like a 223. I called the DFG. They wouldn't respond since the nearest officer was 2 hrs away in Tracey...

NIce goat, I have been try to get that tag for years now. I can't wait until the day when my goat tag comes in the mail.

As far as Wardens go, a couple of yeas ago I was huting x5b and the warden came to camp and checked all our tags and IDs. Nice guy though , he stuck around and had lunch with us. He was only out there for deer season then it was back to the north coast.
