My brother and I are leaving tomorrow for Likely Tables. Any last minutes advice from you guys that have already been this year or those that live up there? By the way, we're hunting public land above Big Sage.
I'm leaving tonight for Likely Tables too. I'll be hunting with a guide on private land. Since I live 14 hours away, I didn't do any scouting. I'm going to spend a
day scouting on my own to see what size bucks are available on public land on Friday.
I'm hoping for a 15+ or better.
I hope to write a complete story when I get back ...
Well I got my antelope on the second day. Here is the brief report. I'll write a complete story later. I got up there a day early to scout around. I spotted only 8 antelope, two were small bucks down by rocky prairie.
I hired a guide who has a big ranch in Davis Creek. We spotted 61 antelope on the first day hunting the Davis Creek area. We confirmed 13 legal Bucks and there were 14 that we could not tell. I had a great first day but I didn't see any bucks big enough. So we decided to try looking up on the Devils Garden.
It was a very rough ride up to the garden, I'm really glad that we used the guide's 4X4 truck. We found a great spot to wait for antelope. We spotted a doe first. Then a heard of wild horses came out to the meadow and we watched them for an hour. Around 1:00 a good buck came by and it looked pretty good at 350 yards. It had good mass and looked like it was at least 14 inches.
My first shot was at 350 yards. I thought it was not that far and I hit a couple inches low in the front shoulder. I fired a couple more shots to knock him down. On about my 4th shot I connected again and down he went. I shook hands with the guide at about the time the buck got back up. I fired a few more rounds out to 500 yards. my 7th round hit again and he sat down but was not finished yet. I searched my pockets for more ammo only to remember that I left my pack back in the truck 75 yards away. The the guide got my pack while I watched my buck sitting at 600 yards away. With a fresh supply of shell. I paced out to the buck to put him down. When I got about 150 yards away he got up again. I got him this time for good. For some reason the 125 grain ballistic tip bullets on my 308 ammo didn't hold together very well. I think I'll switch to Nosler Partition's next time.
The buck was just shy of 14 inches and I was satisfied with the great hunt. I had a fun time learning about all the Indian history of the area. It was a great hunt and I felt the guide fee was well worth the price. I post some pictures soon
