Mongolian pheasants

Fish and Wildlife Advisory commissioner Mike Pottorff of Oceanside wondered if the Department of Fish and Game and Desert Wildlife Unlimited were releasing Mongolian pheasants onto the Upland Game Bird Heritage-funded fields in Imperial Valley. Leon Lesicka of DWU said they are. Lesicka said about 2 percent of the pheasants are Mongolian, the rest blue back pheasants.

Pottorff said he shot what he thought was a Mongolian on opening day. He said the bird didn't have a complete ring around its neck. It wasn't banded, but Lesicka said not all the released pheasants have bands. He said the bird Pottorff shot likely was one of the birds released this fall along the East Highline Canal between Calipatria and Niland.
