A mountain lion trapped this morning in downtown Santa Monica had to be killed to protect the safety of the public and first responders. Department of Fish and Game (DFG) law enforcement was contacted early this morning with a credible report of a juvenile lion near the corner of Second Street and Wilshire Blvd. DFG [...]

Santa Monica PD has more sense than the DFG in this case. No...there's not too many mountain lions in Calif...drug it! ROTF! Doesn't Santa Monica have enough cougars on meds already?

I can imagine this exchange between the SMPD and DFG:

DFG shoots lion with dart.
SMPD: "What're you crazy?? BANG!
DFG: "It's against CA law to shoot a mt. lion!"
SMPD: "It was a threat to public safety."
DFG: "We were going to return it to its natural habitat!"
SMPD: "Go ahead. It's right over there."

Common sense is not common enough.

WTF. The 3rd St. Promonade! And they have 22 GPS collared ones in the SM Mtns. The Admiral and I should have been at home in SM for the hunting. We are up in Central CA chasing hogs and condors, story to follow. I never liked going to the Promonade shopping but the opportunity to get a mountain lion in self defense. That is too "rich". Where is "El Kabong" when you need him. However, I'm sure many of the local beautiful people will be pissed as to them, the lion was probably just waiting for the shops to open up to get in on the early morning sales...

Lion's conversation at Upscale Cafe in 3rd St Promonade.
Lion: "Do you serve small children for breakfast here?"
Waiter: "Of course we do."
Lion "Great, I'll have two, preferably raw!

PS - TonyS, Hope you can come to our July 1 wild game cookout at our home in SM. IF you do, bring your rifle. Who knows, maybe a mountain lion will show up.

I wish I were with ya. Can't wait to read the story. Thinking about heading up there myself.

I saw this on the news not 10 minutes ago and they of course only showed the interviews with people who thought the cops were bad for shooting it, but the kicker, the kicker was the special level of retard that said "for that lion to come all this way, past all those homes, it must have been hungry, THEY SHOULD PUT FEEDING STATIONS OUT THERE. WTF?!!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! The feeding stations are called deer and pets. That level of stupid is why we get Prop117 and why we are going to lose on the hound bill. Sigh.

I just watched the news and the ARA's are coming out of the wood work to voice there eel feelings and Bull$hit about the actions of the SMPD, the old ARA man is even getting his grand daughter worked up about it. She is sending a letter to the city saying they should be ashamed of them self's for killing the Lion.

I love all these humaniacs. The only thing they know about a tranquilizer gun is what they've seen on wild kingdom when old Marlin Perkins shoots an elephant from a helicopter and in the next scene the thing is snoozing. Yeah, it only takes seconds...right?

Not quite. I speak from experience since I have used one numerous times. It takes a good 3 to 5 minutes MINIMUM for the drugs to work, when they do. And they don't every time due to many factors. How far could a mountain lion go and how much damage could it do in 3 to 5 minutes? Tranq guns in a city are normally used for domestic animals (dogs) only as they will usually stay on the street and run until they drop. You only have to follow them until they do. A wild animal, with its afterburner lit by a large diameter, inch long needle with a barb on it that injects 3 or 4 cc's of drugs (which themselves cause a burning sensation as they are injected) in 1/100 of a second by a small explosive charge, (can you imagine how much that would sting?) can run a long ways, over many fences and through a lot of cover before it drops and will be lost most of the time. Is an 80 pound cougar running at mach 2 across major streets likely to cause an accident...ya think? Public safety has to take precedence.

Folks, you just have to read this nonsense, the Admiral and I live in the middle of it every day. However, I do like the idea of "feeding stations" in the SM Mtns as a form of retroactive birth control. I get to choose who gets tied up and left as the "feed". Many of the commentators will be on the short list.

Everyone that cries for the lion should have to put a child out. Bet that would dampen the hysteria a bit.

Its been a wile sense the last mauling, just like Quakes we are over due.

Interesting that one article quoted statistics that there have been only 16 mtn lion attacks between the 1890's and 2007. Interestingly enough they did quote any stats for how many attacks in the few years SINCE prop 117 was passed. I believe there have been 6 (? somebody check me, I could be wrong) since 2007 which is OVER A THIRD of the number of attacks in 100 years. You would think that someone would get a clue that the number of attacks between 1890 and 2007 was so few BECAUSE THE LIONS WERE BEING HUNTED TO REDUCE THEIR POPULATION. And, now that hunting them is banned, their populations are exploding and attacks are rising.

Wasn't it just last month that DFG had to hunt/kill a lion that had killed/mauled someone?

DUH!!

I'm in the belly of the beast too. It really is dumbfounding the crap that people think. Its funny, most of the time they seem convinced that you will agree with them when they make some comment. I actually get some kicks educating people about hunting and guns. They're usually not really sure how to process it. They know they should be outraged (SOP liberal playbook), but they're in shock that they're actually face-to-face with a normal look person that does "the evil things"... Yeah, I dont make a lot of friends here haha

I was wrong. There have been 8 attacks since 2004 and 4 attacks since 2007. Thus, since 2004 there have been nearly HALF AGAIN as many attacks in California of the total between 1890 and 2010 (19 total) and 20% occurred just between just 2007 and 2010.

1. Jan 2004 Mark Reynolds Source: http://www.cougarinfo.org/attacks3.htm
2. Jan 2004 Anne Hjelle Source: (same)
3. June 2004 Shannon Parker Source: (same)
4. Aug 2005 Jeremy Silva Source: (same)
5. Jan 2007 Jim Hamm Source: (same)
6. Jan 2010 (unnamed hiker in Santa Barbara) Source: http://www.keyt.com/news/local/80650497.html
7. March 2010 Robert Biggs Source: http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/headlines/2012/03/man-attacked-by-mountain-lion-saved-by-bear/
8. Nov 2010 (unnamed cyclist/pedestrian in Carpinteria) Source: http://www.edhat.com/site/tidbit.cfm?nid=43374

Interesting that the "official statistics" don't match up with this. Apparently it takes more than a few bite marks/scratches to make the "official" list. The list which, BTW, STOPPED BEING UPDATED in 2007.

What is really interesting is that the number of attacks increased after only a short time after the lion hunting ban was passed.
