JFRWC,

I sent you an e-mail. Lemme know if you get it.

My thoughts...

Well, I think that there is something to what they're saying. Generally, I'm going to agree that bucks that are going to have big horns anytime in their life are going to have them early on. If they aren't trophy potential when they're 2 or 3 then they probably never will be. Which, of course, creates a dilemma in trying to manage for pronghorn if you can do so on a ranch. Theoretically you'd need to try and eliminate the little bucks that are obviously 2 years old or older while also trying to kill the bucks that are big (to make your clients happy)...but if a buck that's big is only 2 or 3 and you kill that buck then that buck doesn't get to reproduce his genes. I think this (big bucks being young) is why MONSTER antelope are still be taken - even World's Record size - almost every year. And also why big bucks seem to appear one year out of thin air. There is one good thing that I know for a fact...given the right conditions or genetics a buck can be over 90 inches for AT LEAST 5 years. We've got one on film for 5 years that was over 90 for all five years. Unfortunately (or fortunately depending on how you look at it) he was the biggest the first and second year we saw him. After that he started getting smaller - still over 90 - but still smaller.

That's my take for now. At least until I change my mind.

We are only going to use 2 of the 8,300 deeded Quay Ranch Landowner Permits this year. One is pledged, the other is not. The pledged tag is going to a MI hunter. He will be there Aug 2. The second tag is available for a solo hunter September 20-21. The hunter will have the option of using the landowner permit with or without a guide. The price for the permit is$1,000 less 10% for Jesse's hunters. If you want, the neighbor is willing to guide for $200/day. The ranch is 15 miles due south of Tucumcari. I also have two landowner permits for August 23-25 on a smaller ranch, 2,500 deeded acres, north of Cuervo NM. These are unit wide permits meaning you can move to the other unit wide 5,000 acre ranch. The price for these are $500 each less 10% for Jesse's hunters. I'm ready to cut a great deal on the two cancellation hunts on my Santa Rosa Ranches. Make me an offer

I just got back from Roy, NM where I participated in the making of a TV show, "The Outdoor Guide." It was hard and interesting but we managed to video three one shot kills in picture perfect order. The show will be aired two times in the fall of 2004. I thought guiding a lady or youngster was the biggest challenge. Nope, try to take a hunter and two camera crew in on a buck. It gets interesting to say the least. One of the hunters was Dave Bloch, President of "The Outdoor Edge", a high quality cutlery designer and manufacturer. His products are worth checking out. He shot a real nice buck. I really can't wait to see this show. There will be a cool surprise for Jesse's readers.

Unfortunately it won't be until 2004. It will be aired on the Outdoor Channel. We don't get it here in Albuquerque unless you have a dish. Heck, I'll have to get someone to record it for me until they send me a tape.

Here are a couple of bucks to get ya going. The first one is the big daddy on the wrong side of the fence. The second was harvested by the owner of the Outdoor Edge, a fine cutlery company from Boulder. They have some way nice products that you guys should look at see www.outdooredge.com. I am booking hunts for 2004 at a new ranch near Raton, NM. If you havea hankeren for the first crack, shoot me an e-mail. Both these antelope will be on "THE OUTDOOR GUIDE " show in 2004. Jimbo
