Glad to hear you'll be ok, you got off way lucky on that one. My dad had a patient in NC years ago with a Weatherby bolt thru his cheek due to a overload of powder & a heavier bullet than it should have had, he made it thru also. Hope you heal soon.

Brent, sory I wasn't there to say adios before you pulled out. Good seeing you again, bad luck about your favorite rifle, but be grateful it wasn't worse.

I was thinking about your mishap today, and I'm thinking you got the bullet into the lands somehow when you chambered it.

Boy, I'm sure it could have been a lot worst.

I do know that a sticky bolt is indicitive of excessive pressures...
Not to sound like a smart aleck, but that picture seemed like a pretty good indication of excessive pressure as well!

One Track -

Glad you are still with us, what a disappointment. No hawg, blown gun, bloody head.... Hopefully you had a good hunt up to the trigger pull.

Glad you are still with us... Hope to see you in AZ someday.

Brent, man I'm gald to hear you're on the mend. Screw Weatherby, they don't know the bad press they just got. Maybe try calling Howa, they make the action for the Vanguard. Maybe that is why Weatherby doesn't seem to care. A phone call can't hurt.

Other than that, 4 letters for ya... SAKO. A new bad boy Finlight or model 75, would probably make you feel a whole lot better.

Glad all is well Brent. Seeing that rifle Saturday night scared the hell out of me. It was kind of ironic because I was trying to explain what causes rifles to blow up to my 10 year old last week. I hope these pictures stick with him forever.

You're all too kind. Thanks.

No, I didn't check the barrel that day. I cleaned the gun on Thursday night, looked down the bore, and through in the truck. Now, it seems silly not to check it often.

Huntducks: All great comments and questions. I don't load. I get my loads from a buddy that also shoots a 7mm mag. I'll get the answers from him.

You guys got it all wrong. The REAL story, as discovered by intrepid JHO undercover reporter RanchoLoco is that OneTrack had stalked to within 20 feet of a nice hog, leveled the rifle, and duffed a chip shot!

He was so angry, he smashed the rifle against a rock, sending shards of broken stock and rock into his face.

Had to borrow your story, Rancho... it was too funny!

Seriously, Onetrack, glad it wasn't worse. That's some scary stuff, whatever the cause.

I'm a little surprised that Weatherby didn't want to examine the rifle, by the way. I guess maybe they don't want to acknowledge any possibility that it was their rifle and not your own doing... no matter how unlikely.

What a relief for you that your able to write about this.
I'm with Evberet on this however.

It's time to start shopping for a new rifle.

I'd hang onto that one though it's got a hell of an impact even now!
What a picture!
That's truely one that expresses a thousand words!!!!

I think you got some real good luck my freind.
Angels sitten on your shoulder or something.

Considering just how nasty things could have been I'm going to step out on a limb and say congratulations for making it through.
WOW!
I'M TOTALLY STUPIFIED

Glad to hear you're OK

Sorry to hear about your misfortune !
I always use the ol' electrical tape on the muzzle trick. Under the best of circumstances in dusty terrain it's amazing how much dirt finds its way into the bore.
<
I tell ya, . . . I would be hard pressed to shoot somone else's reloads.
<

I hope that wasn't the cause.

Hind sight is 20/20, BUT if I don't reload it I don't shoot it, that's not to say that your friend did something wrong it's just my feelings.

Friend of mine who reloads was using Hodgen powder and reloaded some cases one night the next night he went out and reloaded another bunch and was putting everything away when he noticed instead of using 4350 his normal load he had a can of 4064 he did not have a bullett puller and came over and we pulled them sure enought the second night everything was 4064 and something like 15 gr over max had he not seen that i'll bet something would have let go, i'm not saying that's what happend but he has been reloading for 20 years and he could not believe he made that mistake.

You can not blame Weatherby for not wanting to look at the gun it's your gun not there's you find out the cause of the malfuction and if it's there fault they might take a look, but right away reloads will be there defense.

I never put a round in my rifle shotgun or pistol to start the day off without looking down the barrel I don't care if I was hunting the day before I still look, I don't know what you clean your gun with again a big but something could have been left in the bore, patch jag bore brush you would not have been the first just give you another angle to look at to me the chance of that happening is about a 2.

Like all have said .... Glad it was not worse .... and your kinda OK

I wonder what a small stick or piece of mud or dirt would do? I do use black tape on the muzzel. Stalking and brush busting can get something in the barrel.

Like Bobby said to Swazi Davey (on a Goat hunt) when his Blazer blew up on him.

"Is the guy that makes your reloads after your wife?"

I'm no expert on this type of thing, but wouldn't an obstruction in the bore
blow up in the barrel unless the obstruction slid down toward the chamber.

I think the cartridge must have been the problem.
A ruptured case would blow energy in the area of the chamber and the rifle directed most of the energy away from 1 track (luckily).

What was it. Overload, belted cases have a rep for cracking along the belt during resizing, too long overall lenghth, too deep-seated bullet?

I read once were a dude in Africa had a similar experirence when the last round
in his rifle went off. It had been the bottom in the mag over the hunt and he thinks the repeated pounding into the front of the mag may have pushed the bullet in to increase pressure too high.

My neighbor is living testimony of not shooting others reloads. His uncle accidentally loaded some rounds with black powder instead of the proper powder.

he squeezed the trigger and from all accounts there was nothing left of the gun, and my neighbor lost his eye.

I'm glad there was nothing wrong with your eye but a scratch. Even a scratch is still annoying and irritating until it heals.

Keep us posted on the findings as you proceed with this.

Splitting the pot is fair.
Here's my story....
My hunt on Saturday morning started off real slow with a quick hike up about 300 feet to the middle of this ridge to do some glassing, As the sun was rising, I first spotted some Elk all cows feeding on two finger ridges over then seeing plenty of deer and a really nice bull Elk in full velvet, but no pigs.
I start to walk a couple ridges over, up hill, down hill, zigzag, glassing watching the wind and seeing pig sign all over the place. I then start to walk down into a canyon cresting the ridge looking for beds as it's now after 7:00 am. And on one of my stop-look-listens I remember that I have a muffin to eat in the field. I start eating and on my second bite I hear some noise to my right 20 yards away. I see a pig hop up out of its bed; I then shove the rest of the muffin in my mouth and whip my gun around to take a shot with a full mouth of muffin. I look through the scope and all I see are ears, my scope was set on 9 for a 20-yard shot. I take aim best I could and pull the trigger on my 30-06. I look up and all I see are the legs strait up in the air the pig rolls over and some how lands on its feet and starts to roll. I run over the little rise just in time to see the boar give it’s last kick of life down hill about 10 yards away up against a log. I go back to the truck to pick-up Swallow Pig (Steve) to help pull the pig down the hill. The pig pulled us 100 yards down hill right into the truck. The pig was in the cooler by 10:30 and drinking a beer by 11:00. This was my first hunt on Tejon and I feel pretty damn lucky to get a big boar on my first time going in completely blind.
Neck shot shattered the vertebra, 215lbs. dressed boar with 2 1/2 “ tusk.
