I got drawn for an off-range depredation hunt in June. I am an oryx amateur and would love any advice on locations, hunting tactics, and any other information you could possibly provide.
Get yourself a complete set of USGS maps for the area you will be hunting. I use www.mapsport.com for mine. Oryx prefer the wide open plains, much like pronghorn, but you can also find them in the foothills and canyons at the base of the mountain ranges. You want to look for places where you can glass for at least a mile and two is better. They are hard to approach if they see you within a mile, and they will see you. Use the best spotting scope you can afford to find a good one and map out your stalk. They are not too mobile, in that it seems to me that they tend to stay in the area you spot them unless disturbed. Unlike mule deer or elk that always seem to be moving from feeding to bedding areas. Time of day doesn't seem to be a factor although I saw more during low light. A couple of partners will be a big help spotting and packing. They can take a pretty good wallop and still stand. I shot mine 3 times with a .338 Win mag before it was done. The first shot would have killed eventually but they are hard to put down. The two day hunts are short and make you want to press. There is plenty of time in two days to get on several animals on the missile range. I don't know about offrange. The key to being successful on such a short hunt is to have everything ready well in advance and make sure you bring extra. You won't have the time to go into town and pick something up if you need it. They are a kick in the pants to hunt and some of the best table fare you will taste. Good luck.
