Outdoors Report: Too hot to do anything

By Al Kalin, Outdoors Writer

It's too hot to hunt, it's too hot to fish and the bugs will eat you up if you try to go frog gigging at night. In other words, this is the time of year you need to stay under the air conditioner with a big glass of iced tea and work on your equipment.

There are guns to clean and oil, fishing reels that need the dirt and salt buildup washed off, fishing lures with dull hooks or worn-out skirts that need to be replaced and wish books probably stacked up waiting to be gone through to find out what you really don't need but probably can't do without.

The bird watchers from the coast are still out and about, but only early in the morning and even then they come out of their air-conditioned cars with large bandoliers strapped across their chests chocked full of bottled water and sunscreen.

One bird watcher whoI drove by had a silly-looking hat with a solar-powered fan built into the top that pumped hot, bug-laden air on his head. That will be interesting if he emerges from his car near an alfalfa field full of lygus bugs and they get sucking inside his hat. Those little guys can really bite.
