You can buy an AR-10 if you want, you just can't have more than ten round mags, and you need a bullet button.
I would think the terrain you're hunting in would be the primary deciding factor of a firearm. Some places are so overgrown a pistol is best, other places are so open a .300 is better suited. I will take the .300WM on my next pig hunt. Forget tthe AR! They weigh a ton although if you run into a pot grow or are being charged by hogs they work fine.
