It's an old story really. I killed this goat 3 years ago and he just makes B&C. The story is bittersweet as this was one of my first antelope and one of my first really good trophies period. I was so excited to have him on my wall. I took him to a taxidermist in WY who I figured had done thousands of antelope and would surely do a good job. Long story short, the guy botched it. My antelope came back looking like a blow up doll. He looked like he had bulging neck roll with a form that was anatomically incorrect. I've always though he looked like he just smelled a bad fart. I hated it, and everytime I looked at him on the wall it pissed me off. I called the taxidermist and even sent him the pictures below. He took me for a fool, and said everything was fine and that antelope were supposed to look like that. BS! He even had the audacity to get mad at me for questioning his work. He pulled the "I've been doing this for a million years and couldn't have made a mistake, your're just a punk from Californina and don't know anything" routine. The guy was a friend of a friend in a small town and I didn't want to rock the boat and stress friendships so I let it go.

A couple months ago, I'd had enough. Glass Eye had a P&Y antelope he wanted me to measure so while I was out there I took this thing into him to finally get a new look. From the pictures, I think I'll be very pleased. Due to his home on a particular wall in my house, I wanted him turning left pretty hard and Glass eye nailed the pose. Thanks Breck!

So after you tore into the thing, what do you think happened? What did the other taxidermist do wrong?

Here's some before pictures:

If you had not told me that it was done 3 years ago, I'd swear it was mounted 30 years ago. That's how old the form and eyes he used dates back. It was mounted on a very outdated paper mache form and the eyes were old blue pupil deer eyes. Both go back at least 30 years ago.

I never saw a 'lope in a turtle-neck before. Glass eye seems to have saved your trophy. Congrat's to you both.

Well he did tell SDHNTR he'd been doin' it for ever and ever. Maybe to him a 30 year old paper mache form was new.

The guy that referred me to the taxi man was a friend of my friend. That guy was then friends with the taxi. I told him the situation and showed him pictures. He agreed with me that it was not right and he said he was going to help me get it fixed. Then he never followed through and didn't return my calls. I wrote it off as water under the bridge and moved on. $500 is not worth spoiling relationships.

You're the better man, SD. If you haven't already, providing him with pictures of the new mount with the info Glass-Eye shared will help, for what it's worth 3 years later anyway.

By the way, nice looking goat.

That first taxidermist was a genius at mounting the ever feared turtle-lope. It is the prehistoric cousin of the lovable jack-a-lope. Personally I think glass eye ruined it.

All kidding aside -- I don't blame you for being upset one bit. That's a terrible first mount.
Beautiful mount now tho. Nice repair glass eye. EB

That doesn't even look like the same 'lope. Glass eye's version looks classy and the old version looks goofy.

Well done Glass eye.

Right on Nate! Good Taxi is worth every penny! If you have ever hung out at a good taxi shop, you would agree that they are underpaid!

I definitely agree. The ironic thing is that Glasseye's work cost less than the bonehead's hack job. I can't wait to see the job he does on my brother's mule deer.

I wasn't trying to save money the first time around as I will never do that with taxidermy, I just got hosed on shoddy work.

I am assuming it's a new pelt? is that right?

Either way there is no comparison, Glasseye's redoux is great looking, the original had a bit of "George Foreman neck fat", probably from carrying around that heavy set of horns.

That was a pretty fast turn around as well, you were just telling me a short time ago how you wanted to get a new pelt on that critter.

Now do the little lady a favor and get your rug redone, that goat has a better doo than you.

Bearclaw beat me to it. Is this with the original hide? I've got my first, and only, antelope mount and it looks close to what SDHNTR's looked like. I noticed it when I picked it up. I don't think it is as bad but the hair on the neck stands up and does seem to bulge around the throat.

This is a new cape as there was no way to fix it and use the original cape.

An antelope is supposed to have a cowlick around his cheek patch. This makes the hair flare a bit. It should look like mine now does. It shouldn't look like a rat crawled inside the mount and died under the neck.
