I haven't gone for years but want to. But as i recall was typical and apparently still is, the powers that be don't want to tell you the truth and would rather keep you in the dark as to where it;s legal. Last time i was actively shooting a number of years back the only place i knew of within a hour and change from the SF valley or thereabouts was near kings campground. Anyone know if thats still legal and if not, and other places not any further or at least not too much further?

The closest range is Angeles Crest Shooting Range. Steel pistol targets and stands to 50. Rifles to several hundred.

Oak Tree Gun Club is at the north end of the valley.

The areas near Kings Canyon Campground LPNF are legal to target shoot at provided that the fire restrictions are at Level II or less. They are currently, so your good to go. If they are higher then hunting only. The area a little North of the turn off to the campground is good to set up longer range stuff for rifles and the several or so spots on the road into the campground are good for shorter range stuff. The times I go I try to remember to bring a rake and trash bags and clean up after all the bums that have that were there before. I want to make sure these places stay available to shoot at.

What he said! I've spent my last 4 weekends hunting Carrizo Plains and I swear that I came home with 5 or 10 times as many shotgun shells, beer cans, and plastic water bottles as I left with. By the end of a long hike, the cargo pockets of my pants are typically bulging with trash I've picked up from other idiots who don't seem to understand that everyone out there wants to prevent us from being able to shoot on public land...

Oh, and I'll second Oak Tree as a really nice place to go to do pretty much anything shooting-related. Just don't go mid-day on a holiday weekend!

Where did you find that much trash up at Carrizo? Last I was up there in the spring it look pretty immaculate, but then again I may not of seen stuff on the ground because of all the grass and flowers then. Hows the hunting up there been this year?

Yeah usually try to grab as much trash as I can until I'm full up and then I'll pile up things to pick up easier next time out. Here is my completely selfish advice to motivate others to pick up shooting trash. Spent shells and casings are a sign that it's OK to shoot or hunt to people that are unsure if it's OK or not. If it's all picked up better chance they may go somewhere else. I noticed at one of my best spots the more shells I picked up over the years the less other people I started seeing.

. What you'd typically expect - within a few hundred yards of camp or from where we parked the truck at the end of a box canyon. But every once in a while I find the odd beer bottle 6 miles up a steep climb and think "who the *#$&^ hikes a bottle of beer all the way up here and then leaves it on the ground...?"

The trash is getting farther and farther out, use you could hike back far enough there wasn't even boot prints.
Not any more, the closure of all these roads are forcing these yahoos out farther and they are still the same slobs
they have always been they just cant hunt out of their trucks.

And this is not a slam on all road hunters, I road hunt for a period of time and to specific areas, just slobs are going to be slobs wheather the are in their trucks or packed in 4 or 5 miles

As far as target shooting close to Los Angeles I went to "A Place to Shoot" on San Francisquito Cyn past Santa Clarita. Rifle range, clay pigeon range, pistol range, etc. It used to be around $7 a day.
