Antelope poachers plead guilty

GREEN RIVER -- Two Bridger Valley teenagers pleaded guilty last week to the wanton destruction of a big game animal after the pair admitted to killing an antelope out of season in Lincoln County.
Wyoming Game and Fish Department officials said both teens admitted to killing the animal on a dare. Officials said the antelope was six months pregnant with twin fawns.
Game and Fish Green River Regional Public Information Specialist Lucy Diggins said Kaycee S. Carver was accompanied by a 17-year old juvenile when he shot a doe antelope on Highway 189 near Round Mountain northeast of Kemmerer.
Diggins said after killing the animal, both individuals left the area and headed south. Diggins said Kemmerer Game Warden Chris Queen discovered the poached antelope within minutes of it being killed. Kemmerer Police were alerted for suspicious vehicles in the area and observed and recorded Carver's license plate.
Queen said in a statement the two became nervous and ditched a high-powered rifle in a culvert north of Kemmerer and then returned to Lyman. The rifle was later found by game wardens.
"(We) interviewed the juvenile accomplice in Lyman and got him to admit Carver had killed the antelope," Queen said. " And Carver later admitted to killing the antelope."
Diggins said Lincoln Country Circuit Court Judge Frank Zebre sentenced both individuals to seven days in county jail, $1,030 fines, one year unsupervised probation, four years suspension of hunting and fishing licenses, and forfeiture of the rifle used in the crime.
She said anyone who witnesses a wildlife violation is encouraged to call the agency's toll free STOP poaching hotline at 1-800-442-4331.
