Dumb Luck

All I can say is another great weekend at the Tejon Ranch. After we were all set up Friday I headed out to my normal spot on top of a large hill to glass and locate hogs. At about 4pm I spotted 2 sows a boar and a few little guys all feeding on an adjacent hill side. At this point they were about 450yds away and slowly moving toward their bedding area. By the time I got to about 250yds they had made it to their bedding area and slipped out of site. I sat and continued to glass the adjoining hillsides in hopes of catching more headed to bed. At about 6:30pm I spotted the first group moving from their bedding area again. I ranged it again and it was about a 250yd shot slightly uphill. Not having a good rest I did not take the shot and watched them feed.

The boar was raking on a tree which was cool to watch, at this point I decided to cross the ravine and try to side hill them to get a closer shot. I made it to the other side and glassed but could not locate them again. Now it is about 7:15pm and the mosquitoes were out with a vengeance. I reached to grab my face mask and I could not find it and realized it must have snagged on some brush while I came out of the ravine. I sat there for about a minute to decide if I wanted to go back and look for it, Lucky for me I did head back to look for it. As I approached the ravine I heard some crashing below me so I got to an open area where I could see the hill side in front me and started to rake some brush with my foot. BOOM 4 pigs exploded out of the brush 3 ran parallel with hill and the last one decided to run up the hill. The 3 closer hogs were about 40yds away but the window was too short to take a shot on them so I quickly transitioned to the hog running up the hill and lined her up and let the E-tip go to work. She was about 80yds at this point slightly quartered to me.

When the bullet hit I heard the loudest thud I have ever heard and she immediately hit the ground and started rolling down the hill. The bullet hit at her ribs destroying 3 of them along with her spine. I could fit my fist through this hole. I waited for the last of the crashing noise and went looking for my prize. I found her in the middle of the ravine and quickly got to work on her. I drug her a little over ¼ mile to the road below me and waited for my Dad and his buddy to pick me up. The next 2 days I tried my best to get my Dad and his buddy a hog but they just weren’t cooperating. We spotted them both days just could not close the distance. I want to thank Phil again for putting this together and it was great to meet everybody as well.

If you look at the post above my K-rad posted a pic of the entry wound. Thanks!

we went to Xao canyon on Sunday and did not see a thing. I love the jeep but hated it on Sunday when a few bolts holding the ring gear on the rear diff backed out causing us to spend a few hours to patch it up for the drive home. Luckly none of the gears broke but they chewed up the bolts that fell out. driving 55 on I5 really sucks.

Before I tell my story I have to say Thank you is not enough credit for Phil (Speckmisser) He went so far above and beyond to help the new hunters or new to Tejon hunters. He had a noon flight out of the Bay area on sunday to catch and was supposed to leave by noon on Sat. He stayed and guided a group of 5 of us with a plan to cover a good area and be safe about our locations. Clay got his Boar out of that operation and Spec helped him quarter it and gave him his frame pack to haul it out then had to drive all night to make it home. My knees were wrecked so spec had me go up the canyon below the other 4 guys so when they shot they had a chance of putting me out of my misery! (Just Kidding)
Extra thanks again Phillip

ok so here's my story.
Clay32 and I went out Friday afternoon following Dirty Dave and Krad (What a sorry group) we quickly got seperated due to a rhino issue. Clay and I scouted multiple areas and found lots of sign to our rookie eyes. We settled on a spot for an ambush! there was fresh scat, rooting and a newly paved highway through the green wild oats showing the direction of travel. We banked on them traveling back the opposite way that evening. We went to our spot, waited until light was fading and Clay said let's head out. I said no we still have a chance! just before it was too dark to shoot Clay says "Holy scat Batman" there is a huge one coming up the highway I was trying to get it in the glass and just when I did clay says OMG its a
Bear. Sure enough that's what it was, a big black one. We watched him cross the dirt road possibly stalking the pigs we were looking for. We hoped in the rhino and started back for camp and the Bear was hanging right off the road to the right. I yelled at it "Hey Bear" a couple times and he took off in a sprint. I did not get a shot at a Hog this weekend but I had a great time meeting all the guys, BS ing and enjoying the beauty of Tejon. I'm ready to go again now!!!

My son and I had a great time at Tejon, Started slow, too many years since I 've been out camping and felt like a newb on all fronts. Got a few pointers late sat and found a promising area, bunch of deer no pigs, planned to hit it again in the Morning. On the way back to camp almost filled abunch of tags as 8-9 ran out in front of truck at about 8:45. first ever sighting of a live pig for both of us. Sunday sighted a few at 1000 yards and too many ridges over. READY TO GO BACK

Got too tied up at our camp for any socializing with the gang and getting to know everybody better. Next time and soon. Nice meeting the guys I did get to talk with and Phil thanks for putting this together.

Hey guys, glad to hear everyone had a great time. I know I did! Kudos to those of you who killed hogs, especially in light of the tough, tough conditions we dealt with... minimal hog movement and the fact that most of ya'll were brand new, not only to the ranch, but to hog hunting in general! Congrats on sticking it out for those who kept at it!

Personally, I was a little embarrassed by my shooting, especially on Saturday evening. I've really got to listen to those little voices in my head screaming, "don't take that shot! That's a crappy shot!"

As for next year's hunt...

After a lot of reflection and consideration, I've decided to step away from the planning and scheduling of this hunt. It's been really rewarding and a lot of fun to put these things together over the past several years, but it's also required a lot of effort, time, and organization. I realized this year that I just don't have the time or energy for it any more.

Whoever wants to step up and get it going for next year should contact the Ranch ASAP about getting on the calendar for 2011. Ask for Maddi, and she can get you going.

Good luck.

wow what a bummer, I feel like all us new guys pushed him over the edge. :( We'll miss you Speck! I know I sure did learn a lot and had a great time. I hope at least you will hunt with us next year...Seriously man everybody was very grateful for how patient you were and forthcoming with your knowledge of the ranch, it was truly an honor.:not-worthy::not-worthy::not-worthy::not-worthy:

Hey Kevin, no... definitely wasn't you guys. Hunting with the new folks is the most rewarding part of the deal. That's the biggest reason I kept doing it after the first one.

Just don't have the energy to do the planning and organization. Too many other things calling for my time these days.

Hey Speck,
You're one good dude. Thanks again for putting this hunt on, wish I could've been there for the hunts you guys did in the past, and thanks for writing the Hog Blog. Hopefully someone (from JHO or otherwise) will pick up the torch and keep this annual hunt going on, it really is a blast. See ya out there.

I am sorry to hear that Spec does not want to conduct the next hunt. I understand though. My son and i enjoyed the beautiful scenery and we enjoyed the challenge even though we struck out. Maybe if any of you are interested we could have co-leaders to split the responsibility. Just a thought. Ft. Tejon does offer a good value and is the closest spot for does of us south of Kern County who do not belong to private hunt clubs. It was nice to meet more fellow JHO'ers in person.

Congrats to all who got pigs. :thumbs up2: Several have asked me to keep having this Tejon hunt so next year we'll do it. Same deal as this hunt and we'll have the gear raffle Saturday night. Great place for a new hog hunter to learn from the vets and Tejon is just such a great place to camp and hunt. Eric (XDhunter) will be bringing a whole pig too for supper Saturday night.
