VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR TURKEY STUDY IN CALIFORNIA

California Yelper

May 2003

Volunteers are needed to assist on a NWTF turkey food habits research study in California at selected sites. Turkey hunters and volunteers are needed to help collect turkey droppings for a food habits study in the Eldorado, Mendocino, Modoc, and Tahoe National Forests this spring and summer. The study design and collection methods are described below. Please contact Jim Stengle, NWTF Regional Biologist, at 541-488-7973 or iimnwtf@mind.net if you can volunteer some time to help on this important research study.

The study will document food habits of wild turkeys in selected areas of California, Oregon, and Washington. The initial study period will be the spring/summer 2003. The results of the study will assist the respective state agencies in the development of their wild turkey management plans. Volunteers will collect turkey fecal droppings over the established study period and turn them in to a local NWTF chapter representative or designated collector. Samples will be examined microscopically including microhistological analysis. Additionally, turkey crops will be collected on an opportunistic basis from willing hunters who successfully harvest a gobbler in the study areas.

COLLECTION PROCEDURE

Fecal Samples

Ideally, we need five (5) fecal specimens for each sex per area per week. Fresh samples are preferred over dried out samples. Specimens should be stored individually in paper bags and kept cool and dry. Each paper bag should be labeled with the following information:

•Forest name
•Location, GPS coordinates (if possible) or marked on a map
•Date
•Collector's name
•A unique number for each specimen
•Turkey gender

If possible, specimens should be delivered to the local chapter representative or designated collector each week. If not, just keep the paper bag with sample in a secure, cool, dry location until turned over to the designated collector.

Crop Samples If a turkey hunter harvests a gobbler in one of the study areas and is willing to donate the turkey's crop, collect the crop and freeze in a plastic bag (zip lock). Each plastic bag should be labeled with the following information:

•Forest name
•Location, GPS coordinates (if possible) or marked on a map
•Date
• Collectors name (also hunters name if different from collector's name)

If possible, specimens should be delivered to the local chapter representative or designated collector each week. Keep the crop specimens frozen until turned over to the designated collector.

At the end of the each season, NWTF Regional Biologist Jim Stengle will contact all designated collectors, pick up and compile the specimens, and ship the entire collection to the laboratory for analysis.
