My personal favorite bird to hunt is the Mearns they're a real blast. Mt Quail and Chukar are a close second, but theres something about the Mearns that I just like. Maybe its the part when you stop to take a drink and as your looking around a covey of 15 birds will blow up literaly in your face and scare the crap out of you. These birds hold so tight, its definity a bird dogs bird.

Hello all,
I salute
<
you from Anaheim California, but I was born in Romania and raised in Germany. I hunted small game in Europe (Danube Delta in Romania and the plains in Hungary), but I haven’t had the chance to hunt in the US yet. I would like to pick up hunting again, but I need some info and help. I prefer to hunt pheasants, rabbits, quail, etc for upland game and ducks for waterfowl. Any info about where to find rabbits and any good hunting grounds is appreciated.

I grew up in central Minnesota, and my dad had me along for squirrels and rabbits every fall-could hardly weight to use that old JC Higgins single shot .22, shooting "shorts."

Now I live in Phoenix, Az, and have been hunting squirrels and rabbits in the mountain Podersa pine since 1986, and also desert Jackrabbits & cottontails. I use a Marlin 881 in .22 LR with a 3-9 x 32 Tasco scope, and sometimes a 12 gauge Mossberg 835 Ulti mag with 7 1/2 shot for the squirrels way up in the pines.

My non-hunter friends always think that my favorite hunting is for deer or bear etc. but I always tell them that nothing is more fun than the annual October hunts for squirrel & cottontails in northern AZ, you can take lots of animals and the weather is almost always gorgeous, and the friends are super!

I am from the Bay Area, CA and hunt in the foothills as well as the Northern end of the central valley. I chase Pheasants, doves, valley quail and the occasional mountain quail when they present themselves.

I hunt with a couple of guns, but my favorite is my Weatherby Orion Upland O/U. My pheasant/quail dog is a beagle (stop the snickering!!) and he has put up many a wild rooster for me to knock down. I am mostly in to quail hunting, but always take time to chase pheasants after any duck hunt in the Williams area.

Good luck to all.

I live in Ventura and have been shooting doves for almost 40 years, mostly in Southern California but Arizona also. I use a 410 Wingmaster for doves. Last year I went to the Cuyama Valley DFG Heritage Hunt. Not a bird in sight. This year I have applied for the San Jaoquin Valley and Bakersfield, but I read where some guys are heading up to the Owens Valley for dove/trout combo. That has reall stimulated my interest so my plans may change. I am a solo hunter so would like to hook up with a group if they aren't TOO wild and crazy.

Sacracalifas (3 Arnold sightings). I didn't hunt or shoot until I was 34. Now I'm hooked. I'm a shotgunner, hunting dove, Mountain and Valley quail, chukar, pheasants, ducks and rabbits on preserves, refuges and farmlands. The preserves are fine for practice and a quick hunt, but I prefer the wilds for exhilaration and frustration.
My Weatherby Orion 12ga. O/U is my big hitter and clays shooter, and my Beretta 3901RL 20 ga. is my waterfowler and everything else gun.
I also shoot a 9mm and a .45 for target practice. That's my entire current inventory, but I've bought and sold over a dozen guns in the last few years, and will be adding a .308 rifle when the money comes through.
I've got local hookups for upland and waterfowl, and another in AZ on Tohono O'Odham res land for scalies and dove, but my dream hunt would be SD for pheasant and waterfowl, topped off with a Fat Antlered Creature.

I can't believe it. 2 weeks before opening day and nobody talking about doves. Whats up? I got drawn for 2 DFG Dove Hunts, both at Four Seasons, Tehachipi, Kern County. September 1, 6am -Noon and September 2, 2pm - Sunset. I won't be using either one of those and I will Notify DFG tomorrow.

I also was drawn for the September 1 DFG Heritage Hunt at Bakersfield. This is the one I will use.

So I guess the moral of the story is to go through all the application stuff because you do really get picked to hunt. Thats not to say that the hunting is going to be any good. It wasn't the last time for me. One bird all day and I missed because I wasn't paying attention. All day without taking a shot will do that to you.

So we need to hear where folks are going opening day and if there are any groups that have any room. 71 degrees and beautiful in Ventura.

Hi all, I'm Matt and I'm from Iowa. Looks like it's going to be a great pheasant season here this year. I have seen twice as many chicks running around than last year. Around here we hunt pheasant, deer, cayotes, fox, racoon, quail, hungarian partridge, ducks, geese. Last year stocked the freezer real good, I shot 30+ pheasants, a few quail (there's not many around so we conserve) 5 deer plus one with the truck (ouch). and lots of geese and ducks. Anyone ever wants to come down Give me a email and i can fix you up with some wild hunts.

Well i haven't checked in to the Board for a year and a half. Jesses got a great new look.

I live in the San Gabriel Valley -- im sure it had lots of bird fields back in the day --

I shoot a berreta 12ga. O/U

once again this year we'll try Maricopa for dove, probably see a ton of quail instead and when we go back in October, the quail will have magically dissappeared.

Hello to all, I'm new to the board and it looks like a good bunch. I'm in Chino Hills, CA and hunt mostly Quail in the Oak Hills and Hesperia area. I've done some hunting around the Salton Sea and a Dove hunt near Porterville. I shoot a 20 ga Verona O/U that I love.... Beats the hell out of lugging my 870. Been hunting long before I could carry a gun. My Dad was a transplanted Cajun from Bunkie, LA. Hunt, fish, road kill.....

Grew up in Tucson, AZ and spent alot of time out in the desert with a Beeman air rifle or wrist rocket.

Hey there, new to the board, but like what it has to offer. Great work Jesse. I'm originally from Indiana, came to California by way of the Caribbean. Worked there as a SCUBA Instructor for a couple of years.

Anyway, I hadn't hunted in about eight years and my fiance's dad (father-in-law to be) asked me to go duck hunting in the bootheel of Missiouri (where he grew up) last winter. Great duck hunting, flooded timber, hunted in Arkansas too. Bagged some tasty Mallards.

So obviously I remembered how much I liked hunting in Indiana (mainly pheasants) and I'm hooked again. I'm shooting my old Charles Daly 12g. auto for now. Going to get a started dog this fall. Going out for the first time in California this weekend to the IV for dove. Scouted a little last weekend. Hopefully ducks in the fall.

And I'm definitely going back to Missouri this winter for some more ducks in the flooded timber.

I was born and raised in so. cal, long beach area.
I started hunting with friends while i was in high school.
Mostly hunt quail in the kelso valley area.
I have a remington 870 but my favorite shotgun is my beretta 20g quail unlimited.
My dream hunt for upland would be for pheasant in South Dakota or Iowa.
My dad hunted when he was a boy growing up on the farm in Iowa so i have family who still live there.
So hopefully that dream hunt is not to far off

Hello All!!
It's been 11 years since I've pointed a scattergun at anything. I'm 45 and I live in Costa Mesa, Ca. Although i grew up in the San Gabriel Valley, I have a lotta family in So. Idaho ( Hagerman, Buhl and Boise)
and most of my wingshooting experiences are from that area. I'll be up there for T-day hunting with uncles and cousins...should be fun! Usually ducks and honkers in the A.M. and pheasant in the P.M. So damned excited, I went out and bought a new gun, rem 11-87. Was reading about the local Quail shooting, sounds like a tonna work and a tonna fun! I hope to be talkin' with some of you about this as I don't wanna limit my hunting to holiday visits outta state. I'll try to remember to get some pix of this trip and post em' for you!!

Hunt much?

Any San Luis Obispo County upland bird hunters out there?

I live in SLO Cty and all my hunting buddies are down south. Just got back last month from Winnemucca NV hunting chukar. Last hunts were in Independence near Mammoth Mtn and Red Mountain area just south of Ridgecrest. Always interested in meeting fellow hunters in my SLO area.

Also, recently joined the Santa Lucia Sportsmans Association in Santa Margarita, but have not had a chance to go shooting.

Anyway, I am interested in hearing from any local bird hunters.

When does the fun End?
