Hey ranchkid. I know a great hunter out there with that same name. I choose my moniker just for your benefit. Now you know who I am and I know you.

Check out my new topic on lab vs GSpointer. Many interesting comments. And, as you know, from my last hunting trip, I must get a dog.

Yes, the fun is happening everyday. I exploring up my way and ran in to at least a hundred plus Quail. To bad I couldn't hunt them. To many residentials in the area.

Lets make some more fun.

I live in the California High Desert and hunt locally for Dove, Quail and Chukar.

I learned to shoot and hunt at 8 years old from my Dad and we lived where I could go out on my own after school with my dog and get a couple hours of hunting in before my parents got home from work....it was a hoot.

Dream hunt would be my next hunt with my four best friends.......my bride of 32 years, my two sons (31 & 29) and my 2 year old Labrador.....probably this Friday.
Next year my 8 year old grandson joins us and then three others close behind......geez, we'll be a large covey.

Deemteem,

Nice post and welcome though it looks like you've been here a while by the number of posts you've already made!

I learned to hunt also when I was 8 years old for quail out in the high desert. We lived in Juniper Hills, just up the hill from Littlerock off the 138. Same type of situation, we used to walk out the back door and go hunting. Of course I didn't appreciate it at the time, and now drive at least and hour and a half to get into the quail; I'm now teaching my 10 year old son how to hunt and learning myself how to hunt with our dog Rocket, a 2.5 year old male gsp. It's great. I'd like to meet you one day for some chukar hunting if you're up for it.

I still live in the same small central CA town I was born in. By the time I was eight or nine I spent most afternoons chasing rabbits, quail, pheasants, or doves near my house (Time changes things --- too many people & little game left).
My grandparents took me to the foothills nearly every weekend, where I could harvest all the cottontails I wanted, a few tree squirrels, and a ton of valley quail. I used an old Remmington Fieldmaster .22 for rabbits and squirrels, and a little Sears & Roebuck 20 gauge pump for birds. Dad bought me a shotshell reloader when I was ten, and for the next six years I burnt a lot of gunpowder

Don't do much hunting anymore, but as my oldest grandson is now 8, I'll be doing more. Wife got me an 1100 (long barrell & full choke) for our anniversary 20 or thirty years ago, after the bailing wire wouldn't keep my old 20 gauge together. Last Christmas, wife and kids got me a 26" barrel Wingmaster 20 gauge. Only chased quail and grouse with it three times this season, hopefully will use it more next year.

Dream hunt for me is just going. 25 years shot an antelope in Montana, but had a whole lot more fun chasing all the birds on the high desert. Would be nice to do that type of thing again, but mountain quail and grouse near home will do!

common sense,

I too grew up in an area that was plentiful with game 30 years plus ago. Grew up catching snakes and lizards, and hunting the same as you with pellet guns and 22 rifles. Never had done any shotgun hunts when I was growing up. Rabbits and bird and such.

What small central CA town do you live in? I live in Templeton, North San Luis Obispo County. My son's are still a bit young but a few more years and I hope to hunt with them. Congrats on 20 years anniversary and the Gun.

I have been hunting as much as I can get away from family duties in the local National Forests and otehr areas.

If you are local and want to do some hunting, let me know.

Good hunting and Merry Christmas to all.

I grew-up in Ridgecrest California and left after high school vowing never to return. Went to college to avoid the draft.....Vietnam lasted longer.....joined the Air Force and saw the world......after that ole' Ridgecrest looked pretty good, it was where I wanted my kids to grow-up. Now I live minutes from some of the best chukar and quail hunting anywhere.....and the same for some great stream fishing in the High Sierras. This is where I belong....here is a picture of my habitat.

I grew up in in Oregon near Salem. I've been hunting sense before I can remember. Dad always took me with him because that's the only way that ma would let him go. The Corps brought me to yuma four years ago and i have gotten out and i still find myself living here. I spend two weeks a year elk hunting back in oregon, and the rest of the time i try to hunt whatever is in season. Upland hunting is good here in yuma so i find myself spending more and more time with a shotgun in my hand. If anyone is in the area give me a shout and we can do a little shooting.

Great photo. Beautiful habitat to say the least. I passed by your way last week. Went out east of Barstow in the Mojave and had a great hunting trip with some friends.

Also, how is that Dog Belle, I think was her name, doing? Any others that need a home? I definitely need a GSP. Went out all day yesterday out in the Carriso Plains area. Beautiful day. Bagged 5 and lost one in the bush. I usually lose several downed birds without a dog.

If you are game, and when I come out your way next season for some quail and chukar, maybe we can hook up for some hunts. You are welcome to join me in my neck of the woods anytime.

Also, anyone else in my vacinity that is interested in bird hunting let me know.

Enjoy the last few days of the season.

Hi all. I'm Deemteam's oldest son and was also raised in Ridgecrest. I too joined the Air Force and saw the 'world'. After 11 years I got fed up with M-16s and traded them in for a stoger 12ga. I'm now back in Ridgecrest hunting with my ol' man on weekends.

Horsecranium!

Welcome to JHO and welcome back to the USA. I spent about 10 years going to sea with the Merchant Marines and know what it's like to be away from home so again, welcome back.

Your Dad sounds like a great guy from reading his posts here. Certainly a knowledgeable upland hunter. You'll like this forum here.

Where are you from and where do you hunt upland or small game?

SoCal all my life (except for a brief stint in Napa)... I upland's (mostly dove) in El Centro area.

Do you use a bow, rifle or shotgun? What kind?
12g Shotgun.... Beretta AL390

Who taught you how to hunt upland or small game and when was your first hunt?

Hunted bunnies and birdies with dad when i was younger. Continued hunting doves with high school friends until a few years ago (when the last finally moved away). Hmmm, first hunt? Maybe a few lizards in the backyard with my BB gun when I was 5 or 6. Don't tell my dad, he'd make me go back, find their skeletons and make soup out of them or something. "Don't point at it son, unless you want to kill it & eat it"

What is your dream upland or small game hunt?
Wow... days upon days just checking out the areas without explaining to the wife why we're out there. Perhaps a lodge is involved... lots of birdies on opening day. Great fishing mid-day. To actually see a chukar in the wild. Not to sweat out 6 gallons of water in 3 hours. Not finding a rattleworm in the bushes that my bird is supposed to be in. A great sunset with a bunch of other JHP'rs (or sorry, is that JHO'rs now?) telling lies and laughing our asses off over some cold beers before we get up and do it again the next day!

Oh ya, and no garbage left behind by other "hunters"

Seems like many of us hunters started out hunting snakes, lizards, frogs and anything else we could catch....

Like you Dan, and others I grew up in the woodland hills, CA which actually had hills back when I was a kid. I was obsessed with reptiles and would catch and keep anything, including rattlesnakes, until my father figured out what I had in some aquairums in my bedroom.

We started out making lizard catchers with the long grasses. then more sophisticated things with fishing poles, than snake catchers so we could catch the rattlesnakes. Then we made blow guns and would try and shoot anything, then got BB/Pellet guns. Then 22s.

And now, thanks to ranchkid, I have developed OCHD...which as he describes is obsessive Compulsive Hunting Disorder. I actually love to hunt upland birds and use my O/U 20 guage. My favorit bird so far is chasing chkar. And I love to sweat 3 gallons in an hour. I love the workout and the chase. As long as I have enough water to go with me.

I grew up spending all day in the hills hiking around for snakes and lizards and upland bird hunting was not much different, except now we are after birds or a sort.

Can't wait for opener just a few weeks away...

Hello everyone!!

This is my first post on JHO, but have visited this great site for a long time and figured it was finally time to "get involved."

I was born and raised in Southern California and grew up fishing in the Eastern Sierras with my family. However, I was not introduced to bird hunting until I met my father-in-law 19 years ago. My first hunts were pheasant hunts on a large ranch in eastern Oregon. We would hunt the cornfields for pheasant and then climb the nearby hills surrounding the farmland for quail and chukar. It was not uncommon to bag a limit of wild pheasant, quail, and chukar all on the same day. At the time, I had no idea how spoiled I was to experience such great hunting!! About 10 years ago I talked my father-in-law into hitting up some of his South Dakota relatives for some pheasant hunting. I've been hunting the south/central portion of South Dakota for the past ten years. It's awesome!!! I have done some quail hunting in the Kelso Valley area several years ago. I have three boys who are now of the age where I would like to get them started in bird hunting. I look forward to getting back out in the California desert and doing some chukar chasin' and quail hunting. Any help or suggestions from any of you would be appreciated, as I've enjoyed following your posts in the past.

Howdy, I just found this forum a couple of days ago. I am from north Florida and have been hunting all my life. My dad was a turkey hunter and he started dragging me along about as soon as I could walk. I have hunted everything we have in the southeast but birds are all I hunt these days. Look forward to sharing a few pictures and stories here.
