ruger mac,
I used to have a Model 70 XTR, Remington 700 BDL, Ruger Model 77 200th Anniversary edition and I have sold all of them and replaced it with a Tikka Whitetail Hunter, Browning Automatic Rifle and a Remington 742.............all of these to say that all the previous 3 rifles that I sold were of the blind magazine type.........where to unload the rifle when hunting and then getting in and out of a vehicle............I have to fumble the loose cartridges in my hand............many times dropping the loose cartridges in the dirt. I got tired of that and now all 3 replacement rifles are of the detachable magazine types.................where I unload the rifle by popping out the detachable mazazine and PRESTO!!!!! the rifle is unloaded with no fumbling and dropping loose cartridges in the dirt or mud. Now while hunting(especially with the new rules in Fort Hunter Liggett regarding weapons in the vehicle while hunting should be chamber and magazine are both empty) I can unload the rifle without a hitch to get into a vehicle and then reload just by snapping the fully loaded detachable magazine. I tell you the difference is heaven and earth in hunting situations in the field. Now i don't even pay attention to hunting rifles with blind magazines............knowing it is a pain to fumble the loose cartridges while unloading and re-loading the blind magazine. Savage makes the detachable magazines with the excellent accutrigger. Tikka also makes the detachable magazine rifle......................Remington also makes a model with the detachable magazine..................and so many others.
Thanks for putting up with my no-fumbling loose cartridges in the dirt or mud bias.
'Nuff said

Hey thanks for all that Larrysolga, I wanted to stick with Ruger, get it RUGER_MAC, but they where to pricey and i dont have a job now so budget was the main thing, up until i saw this rifle in a pawn shop it was going to be a Thompson Center and cheapest luepold i could find. I have a savage .17hmr w/acutrigger and love it. I was also looking at the Remington 770 w/scope it has the detatchable box magazine and that was a big deal to me but when it came down to it I found my Weatherby w/scope, took it to the range today and it's DEAD ON!! not bad for something sitting in a Pawn Shop.

Great, this looks like it's going to happen! I'm pretty excited.

How do the logistics look? Do we all camp together in an area? Might be a good time to start a list of stuff that will come in handy.

We all camp in a large area, has tables and a large fire pit. George said we still have wood left but I will confirm, if we need wood it will be $10 ea, is everyone ok with that? We just basically do our own thing and help others out if they needed it, someone forgets something somebody else will have it type of thing. But I'm open to anything.

Mel-

I'm scrambling for the deposit, but should have it to you by the 25th. I've just had a 500 dollar smog repair bill on my truck, but I'll dip into my savings if needed.

Hey again, I have a cousin who might want to come, and his son, with this be to many people, then again i dont know how serious he is about going since he already has access to private property in that area. He/I woul like to know how the hunt is set up is it fully guided or partialy guided? And finally I was going to bring my quad but would it just as easy to leave it at home and let the guide handle just one mode of transportation?

Find out if your cousin in serious, if so he can jump in. This is semi guided. You can bring the quad, but you can only use it for transportation to and from the hunting area, not to cruise the ranch.

Ok, spoke to George last night confirming a few things. We will be meeting at the Lake Sonoma visitors center located at Lake Sonoma 3333 Skaggs Springs Road Geyserville, CA 95441-9644 at 11:00am Friday 10/2, we will hunt Friday evening, Saturday and half day on Sunday. He says there's still fire wood at the camp from our last trip, so were good there.

Just a couple quick things, I know everyone know's this all ready, but have to mention it anyway. We all know that we are hunting someone else's property, but lets treat it as it's our own. Keep the camp area clean and make sure before we leave all is picked up, George doesn't have any restrictions, just that we don't leave anything behind. He was really impressed last time that he didn't even find a wrapper from a group of this size, would like to keep it that way.

If you bring a quad, remember it can only be used for transportation to and from your hunting spot, not to cruise around the ranch. If you have your own quad or transportation to the hunting spot (George usually want's to take you in his Rino), and decide to leave to go back to camp, try and get a hold of George by radio or let him know you may do this after he drops you off. Last George was looking for someonew who was already back at camp. George will more then likely just show back up at a designated time to take you back if needed. George and Ken both have had some close calls on their quads when driving the roads, Ken actually got hurt real bad, George puts these restrictions on for our safety, no other reason.

George is a straight up guy and will bust his butt trying to get us on hogs, he really takes in personally if we are not successfull. He thinks we will have a good hunt, but lets remember this is hunting and anything can happen.

Lets get it done, going to be fun.

Ok, so here we are <3 weeks out and I just spent some time re-reading last years thread....

A little about me for the group... 36yo father of 6. Firearms enthusiast, but first time hunting. I'll be bringing my 14yo son to get that part of the family ball rolling. He’s a big kid and great shot. Should be a great time father-son

I'll be driving up from the LA area, so it’s a 3am start it looks like on Friday. Hey, what’s 460 miles amongst friends...? Hopefully my son puts something worthwhile in the iPOD. :skeered:

Coming up from the south, do you all typically go 580 through Oakland, or stay on the 5 to the 12 and cut over through Fairfield etc? I’ve done both, but not on a Friday morning.

Have all the gear coming together now – Pack, boots, lightweight camo, tent, rifles, ice chests, camp gear etc… Some Gold Dot 230 grain .45+P rounds in case we’re able to get close and go dirty hairy/medieval on a porker.:bandit:

Going to do a few day hikes local to check things out (maybe scope a few deer spots down here) and make sure I don’t have any gear issues. My son will be coming along as well to make sure I don’t have any kid issues either (while this is Wine country, but I don’t want it to turn into whine country)

Starting to think about food and what will work the best. I’ll probably bring a few pounds of bacon and sausage from a hog we had butchered a few weeks ago and maybe I can talk the wife out of a roast or at least some chops or ribs. (with 6 kids the a whole pig don’t take long to disappear at home..) Plenty of cliff bars and related pack food. Some fresh water, so distilled stuff that looks like water etc… :beer toast:

Taking my 3 oldest boys (10-12 and 14) out to the range this Sunday for some R&R (plinking, trap, handgun etc) as well as to get the 270 and 243 dialed in / validated.

So how about the rest of you..? What’s happening these next few weeks while you get ready?

580 through Oakland is probably best. 12 would take a while from I-5. Alternatively, you could take 580 to 680 North, to 780 Benicia/Vallejo and then 37 to 101. It really depends on accidents. 101 itself can get pretty congested as well. Friday morning shouldn't be too bad. Figure on about 7 hours or so.

Since I live in Stockton, I take HWY 4 though Martinez and over the Benicia bridge then 37, but I don't take the it to 101 I turn off before that seems to be a little faster.

Guys I'm sorry but I wont make this one. The smog repair on my truck took all the money I had saved for this trip. I'm really bummed, was going to be my first real pig hunt. I am glad the hunt is on for all you and that it is going to happen. Damn. I was really looking to dropping a pig with my old .35 remington. Well, at least I'm still young.....relatively.

Have fun guys and give 'em hell.

bux-n-dux, sorry you couldn't make it.

elkguys, I havn't heard if your still in so I took you off the list. If your still in, please let me know and I'll add you back.

I'm going to toss something out to everyone, George and all his guys really bust their butts for us on this hunt. I know money is tight and it's tough for all of us to make this hunt happen, especially for some who are coming a long distance. It was actually brought up from one of the guys on this trip, should we take a collection up for tips or just leave it up the individuals.

Let me know.

I have thought of that i for one will be giving a tip to who helps me, since i dont know to much about hunting, cleaning, stalking, etc... i figure any guide i get would be working overtime answering all my questions. then of course if any of Georges' guy's help me with skining, gutting, and butchering then the size of my tip would reflect that.

Maybe we can put together a seperate tip for George, we could all put in a small amount just for him. How many people does he have working/helping? How does it work, 2-3 guys per guide, or one big group?

Last time George had 1 - 2 guys helping plus Ken the old guy who use to run things. I assume it will be pretty much the same.

I will be taking pmillerusa and his son with me, we actually have 10 people total (someone else jumped in last minute) So that leaves 7 people, so I'm guessing it will be like 3 guys per guide or so.

I'm all for putting a tip together for George and then if someone wants to tip their guide they can do that on an individual basis.

We can all discuss at the camp fire.
