Anyone mind if I talk about the thread topic here?

I looked into it years ago and decided it wasn't for me because of the time limitations I had. It is not their fault.

On a side note, it's frustrating for me as a teacher to not be able to afford to hunt successfully in CA, or at least not afford the same opportunities afforded other honorable careers (police, FBI, etc., as listed above). That's not WU's fault, I know, but MAN! I would love to have the chance.

Please vote for more pay for teachers, and less money for needle exchanges, govt sponsered killing of unborn babies, methanone programs, (do I need to go on?!)

A friend and I checked them out at a Riverside Sports Show ,read their material and asked questions.We surmised since their ranches are far north there wouldn't be too many opportunities to hunt so we passerd.

Mudroller is right on with his take. I am not a member of WU but my father-inlaw is. A have hunted with him as a guest quite a few times. The ranches I have been to have been top notch. They are well taken care of and the people who hunt them have been nothing short of courteous and respectfull. The comment that was made about being able to leave your rifle on the table back at camp and knowing it will be there when you get back is totally true. Another thing you'll notice if you ever hunt a WU ranch is how serious the patrol guys take their jobs. These guys might as well be game wardens because they take their jobs that serious. Is the club perfect? Probably not......It is just unfortunate that there are people out there who make comments and accusations about that which they know nothing about.......

mudroller, whiskerz, it's up to you if you want gundogtrainer's post pulled since he's not going to back up his accusations. I think you guys refuted his claims pretty good but the trash they drug in here stinks this thread up pretty bad.

Personally, I'd be happy if you could just post a note in the ORIGINAL POSTS (2 of them) by gundogtrainer to the effect that:

"The site administrator asked gundogtrainer to substantiate the claims and he is unwilling or unable to back them up."

I think that might speak louder than just deleting them from an open forum. It would also lend "credibility" to any other comments he makes, as well as to others who choose to make unsubstantiated claims.

spectr17, I'll say leave it. I still think the whole thread should stay as is. It shows that WU works for most families, doesn't work out for others, and there are some people who make stuff up for whatever reason. I just always thought the people trying to destroy hunting/fishing clubs would be the ANTI's, not fellow hunters and anglers.

I have B-zone tags this year, going to Moffett Creek Oct 1-6, hope to be done and heading home Oct 2.

I only caught 9 bass, but I was using a new fly I designed and it needs a little tweaking before it works perfect. Catfish bite with cut anchovies was very good, the kids stopped counting at 30 fish. I let them kill 3 two pounders. Llama's were following me around everywhere.

I haven't been to Benz yet, thinking about quail hunting there this fall.

I set up an appointment with an wilderness unlimited rep just to get some information on what is was about and when the guy arrived he was very nice and gave alot of information, at the end all of a sudden he wanted some money and told me if I don't sign on now he has to put down that Im not wanting to do this and it would be One year before I could sign up,,, I didn't want to jump into the club right away but pull my information together and then discuss with wife, he told me he would give me a couple minutes with the wife to discuss but don't waste his time because he just drove from Turlock, Ca to Tulare, ca and wanted to get a signature, I told him its not gonna happen tonight and he got real rude in my house.... So I asked him to leave on his own two feet before I throw his #$% out the door... I could have gotten ugly but I let him take his goat smellin ass out of my house and will never never even consider the Wilderness unlimited... my two cents.....

WU didn't work for me.

I couldn't ever get a reservation, and never hunted any ranch that I actually wanted to hunt, it was almost always a 4th or 5th choice.

Bummer for me! I hunt for a living, so I'm guiding come hunting season and never chased deer on WU properties. I got involved just for hogs/turkeys. I did take a $3,000 hog on the Palm ranch eventually, but I was unimpressed with the bulk of the properties I did hunt.

They have a couple great properties, but just ask how many members they have and ask what they're membership success rates are and they'll clam up pretty quick, because they don't release such info to members.

Wild hogs/turkeys aside, statistically, WU can't beat public land hunting. ...and public land hunting is still free.(Los Padres NF user permit aside).

Expensive learning lesson for me, hope you can save some bucks.

When I talked with them on the phone, they said they had several properties in my area (Santa Barbara County). When the rep arrived he could only show me two properties and "we're about ready to sign more into the program".
When I told him that I needed to think about it because I still work and was looking for areas close by, he got real pushy and said I had to sign right then.
Yep- I sent him packing.

I had a similiar experience. I met a WU rep last year and I made it VERY clear (on the phone) that I was just wanting information and see what the club had to offer. I met this guy at a local pizza shop and looked over the portfolio. We went over all the information and he hit me with the $2200.00 dollar price. I wasnt excepting that much and he stated after my first year that price drops. I wasnt prepared to make a decesion right on the spot and I was upfront about that. When the guy saw I wasnt busting out my checkbook, he got real PUSHY and that just made me not wanna join. Told me to use my cellphone and call my wife over the phone and discuss this purchase. ARE YOU KIDDING ME? Told me he drove from Sacramento and spent "hours" driving...Please!!!!! He also told me that if I didnt sign on the x, that corporate would not let me join for a certain amount of time. BS!!!!!!!!!!!!...If that's how WU really does business, I would NEVER wanna set foot on one of there properties.

I had some built in curiosity from reading this thread so I sent an email to WU and maybe a week or so later I received a phone call from a Rep from the company. I talked to him for a few minutes, he was interested in setting up an appt so we made one and he came over to my home last week. Was nice showing me a binder with pics of the properties, pics of game taken on the properties. I was told there is an initial fee of $1100 and first year membership dues of $1350. After one year then all I would have to pay is the annual dues ie $1350. A payment plan could be made for both of these numbers and could be made over a years time. I told him I was not interested in joining now but perhaps in the summer etc. He basically said I had to make a decision now or I could try later but since I had met with him then it might not be that easy to join if I waited. A bit of a pressure selling tactic but we the buyer are holding all the cards. I just had this feeling that I shouldnt join, so I didnt. He only had 2 properties in my area for deer hunting anyway.

I had the same thing happen to me last year. I was trying to get information and a rep called and said he would be in my area, so we set up a meeting. During the phone call I just said I wanted some basic information, and I just wanted to see if the cost/success ratio would be on my side, and some other basic questions, he said he wanted to wait until we met. After I listened to his sales pitch, and looked through his portfolio and he told me about price and some other basic things he could have told me over the phone. Then I told him I needed to sleep on it and he gave me the speal about how he drove all the way down from Sacramento to Coalinga and he just needed like a hundred dollar check for a deposite to keep my place. He told me he wont come back and unless I was sure I didn't want to join I should give him a deposite. The kind of made me feel that unless I gave him the check he was probably not going to leave. I gave him a check for around 100 and called the next day and had them send it back, they kind of gave me the guilt trip. Once he got desprate it made my mind up for me after he left I began to think how can a club be so good and sought after if they basically beg people to join. WU might be for some people. I would rather hunt public and not shoot any deer or hogs this year then have someone beg for me to pay them to be in there club.

Hi Elkguy.

I have deer hunted on the two WU ranch's near Caliente very close to Bakersfield. I didn't kill or even see any deer. I saw one small forkie that was killed. I heard a few others were killed in a drive. The mountains are very steep and I saw two nice bears one very far and one close but I wasn't ready. I have had great quail hunting at the Cummings ranch near Teachappi. If you live in Bakersfield then WU is not a bad choice for quail and pigs Cummings had a lot of sign and I could of killed one if I was a little more alert. You can get a deer it won't be easy one WU member told me he averaged a deer every other year. I can't speak of pushy salesmen that wasn't my experience but its not a good sales technique. I would rejoin WU if I lived further up north or could get more time off in the fall but I have three kids in soccer so its not easy.If I had more time I would definatly re up.

I just noticed I had a phone message on my cell phone from the WU rep that recently came over to my house. Apparently he read my post here on JHO and was not pleased. He said I was " making #!&% up " . I stand by what I posted.

After hearing your speel I felt like the program was not for me at least not at this time
and after we discussed that aspect you mentioned about filling out a card again a few months before I wanted to join so that maybe I would be contacted if slots etc opened up. Something to that affect. That is as I mentioned in my prior post what I consider, " a bit of a pressure selling tactic"

To the rep who came over to my home and now left a message on my phone, please don't call me again. I didn't appreciate you basically calling me a liar. If I noticed that my phone was ringing and I answered it what would you have done? Start yelling and cursing me out for having an opinion with our meeting. As a salesman rejection is something you should accept from time to time, not try and scold someone for making an honest post.

I am glad I went with my gut on this one.

Fresnohunter, there are a whole pile of folks, including me, who have had the exact same experience with WU sales folks and I'm sure any of us would be glad to corroborate your statements.

For what it is, WU can be a great deal for folks who have time and energy to use it. Same goes for Golden Ram.

But boy howdy... the sales approach WU uses sure ain't gonna win them many fans.
