I'm always ready to go. sent in for the turkey draw last week and may go chase pigs this weekend. Went after the pigs last week near Kettelmen City on WU land but the pigs got across the fence before i got to them

I am interested in WU, I live in Rocklin ( up north by Sac) and can pretty much hunt when I want. I was thinking before I spend the bucks are there any WU members in my area that want someone to split costs (gas and everything else)? I would also be happy to pay the 600.00 guest pass fee.

Im 47 hunt all species and very easy going. we can meet for a beer or lunch to discuss this further if it sounds like it might work for you.

Thanks Steve

I think the guest pass was $650 this year if I remember right. Last year I had two on my membership but this year I just paid for 1.

How does that guest pass thing work? Does the guest get to go as often as you do or is there a limit or what? If you had a usual hunting buddy if you got the guest pass could you, for example, take him to one of the duck properties 20 times during the season or what? Can a guest go on a big game ranch or is that just for members?

The "guest pass" is a Plus Membership, and they can only go with the member. I think they can take a total of 3 big game animals, either 2 deer and 1 hog, 2 hogs and 1 dee,r or a bear, deer and a hog, just cant be over 3 (i believe). So there's not limit on how many trips, just the number of animals they can take. I've been trying to talk a buddy of mine into paying the $650, cause most of the time I go by myself. If you really think about it, the $650 is nothing if the guest is able to take 3 animals a year.

Now for the plus member to go duck hunting, the member would need to be a full member. The cost for that "guest pass" is $800, not sure how much game they can take under the full membership.

Mel has it nailed, but what some don't realize is that when you have a plus membership you can increase your take of animals as a member by 3 big game animals. So if I have a plus membership I can kill 4 hogs instead of 2.

It all depends on how and what you hunt, if you can hunt a lot and hunt a majority of their animals they offer then it might be a good deal. I looked into it, even had them come out and give me the sales pitch. For my self it was nopt worth it at all but i onle hunt pigs and can only hunt on weekends, 1200 a year for two pigs well you do the math. I can hunt Tejon ranch 4 times a year for that money and will see 5 times the game. Again for me it would not work.

I think you guys are nuts! Other then hogs and maybe turkey public land offers excellent hunting in CA. There are birds, deer, and bear galore out there! You just have to accept that you need a 4x4 and the hiking will be rough since all flat land is either private or developed. I suppose if you are old or handicapped and can't get around in the rough terrain that would make sense to hunt ranches.

I personaly would use that sort of money to hunt OR or NV. The deer is so thick in places you could kill them with a 2x4 and driving at night in eastern OR is like a 25 MPH because the enormous deer and elk are along the highway every 1/4 mile.

2,000 bucks to hunt private land is just insane! I think i'd rather stay home.

i dont know too much about wilderness unlimitted just from what i have been told from my father in law and friends just that its sometimes hard to book on ranches you want to hunt. i am currently going to be joining golden ram with a buddy of mine have heard many more positives about golden ram than wilderness unlimited and the guy on the phone for golden ram was very pleasant and helpful with a lot of information so thats where i will be heading this year!!

I went to their site but access to the areas i wanted to view was restricted...I am not authorized. They don't even have a FAQs page...WTF? So is this just "private access" meaning you still need to have tags or is DFG stuff excluded like at BHCR? It looks like less than 5% of their ranches are in So. Calif. Is that about right? Over 2K for nothing more than access seems kinda high, doesn't it?

GR has 10 big game ranches and only 3 waterfowl, I've heard they have a couple good hog properties. I think their prices are pretty close to that of WU. I actually looked at both, but went with WU cause they had way more properties, over 80 total with close to 30 for waterfowl. I'm sure WU has a lot more members as well, but they don't overcrowd their properties and have certain restrictions that help manage the game, which i'm fine with. Not trying to sway anyone to choose WU over GR, just giving my reasons for what I went with WU. I think with either club you will find people who hate/love each one.

Good luck.

Appears they are almost exactly the same price. My WU was $1855 this year and that was with a plus member (equivalent to corporate at GR). Family is allowed and is not considered as a guest as well. Only difference really is the amount of property. WU has ranches all Across California covering zones A, B1-B4, B6, C2, D5, D7, D8, D9, D10, X4 and X5B and don't forget there are also 29 ranches available in Oregon.
