What's the deal with the AA hulls being so much more expensive than the other manufactures? My buddy is starting to reload for the shotgun and this is all he'll buy because that's what someone told him to buy but I can buy other than AA hulls for .01 each but the AA's are .035 each. Are they really worth the extra $$$. Thanks, Dennis

Although Winchester AA are among the top hulls for reloading, I prefer the Remington STS hulls. The Remington Club Hulls are good too. Other hulls are also good for reloading but the only ones I've used are the ones I mentioned. I also use the Remington hulls in three inch loads.

Stryder:

AA hulls came on the market at least 35 maybe 40 years ago. At the time, they were vastly superior to everything else on the market. It should surprise no one that after 40 years of catch up, some of the other shotshell manufacturers came up with a product that comes close to matching AAs.

My guess is that what you are hearing is 35-40 years of accumulated knowledge that assumes AAs are better. My advice is to pick a hull, then stick with it.

I use the Remington STSs and the Remy Gun Club hulls as well as the Winchester AA because the same recipe and components works for all of them. My reloading press can't tell the difference between them too. A box of my reloads contains a mixture of hulls.

O on a side note stay away from the older/ oblolete 2 piece hulls. those are an accident waiting to happen IMHO.

You mean my two piece hulls that I have a couple of trashbags full of are obsolete? Did Winchester wise up and start making them like the old ones? I hate my two piece empties. Buckling on me all the time on the final crimp. I totally switched to the Rem. STS's because of this problem. If Winchester has wised up I'll start buying new boxes of AA shells again just for the empties.

Two piece hulls have a separate base wad that is not formed from the outer sleeve of plastic. The issue is that it is at least possible for that base wad to lodge in the barrel of a shotgun and on subsequent firing of another shell, blowing the gun up. Never seen it, and I use the new HS hulls as well as the STS's. They're just fine.

They're both good, the STS is more of a premium hull than the gun club. Again; they work fine.

Some sources say you can reload almost any hull. And they are probably correct. From the information I get you just will not get as many reloads out of the hull. I have found, and I am new at this as well, that the Walmart Winchester and Federal hulls load just fine. One source I read said that the Remington STS, Gun Club and Sporting/Hunting hulls were all the same. I shoot a lot of Winchester Target Loads and the hulls are a little lighter than the AA but reload just fine in 12ga. The only problem I find in reloading the Target Hulls in 20ga. But then again using a Lee Load All is not the top of the line reloader either.

When all is said and done if you leave you AA or STS on the ground at the range I'll picke'm up for sure.
