2 friends and I drew unit 47 (2) for 'lopes and I was hoping someone out there could maybe give me a little insight on what to expect in this unit. I have a delormes map right now, blm maps are on the way and I'm not the sort to go asking for anyones hidey holes but a gentle nudge in the right direction is always appreciated.

From looking at my map there is not a lot of public land in this unit but there appears to be a sizeable chunk up in the shirley basin area. Can I expect to see 'lopes up that way? Another question I have is about lodging. Is there anywhere at all to stay within 30 minutes or so of huntable areas? Thanks for any help given, Dennis

Shoot a good one!

Stryder,
Congrats on the tag! I don't know much about unit 47. All i can tell you is what I've heard from friends that had that tag. Trophy quality bucks really are not there, theres a lot of tags for the unit, its managed for numbers rather than quality. They ended up with a couple 14" bucks and they were the biggest they saw in the unit. The shirley basin is a pretty big chunk of public land and there will be plenty of goats there. It should be a fun hunt! Good luck!

Hey Paul! I'm planning on tyring to S&S one with my bow, I've been practticing alot and going rabbit hunting alot, in fact I've got one in my ice chest right now from this morning!

Hey Ernesto, I knew going into this unit there wasn't alot of quality but I'm taking two buddies who've never shot a big game animal so I figured that this would be a good way for them to see plenty of animals and to get their feet wet. Thanks for the info! I've already gotten a couple emails from other guys who hunt there and they said there's plenty of 'lopes and plenty of land to tromp around on. Can't wait!!!

p.s. Ernesto this is Wraith from MM.

Hey Stryder,
I'm going to be hunting deer in region J, and hopefully lopes in 42, they still have tags left for 42. The ranch i'm hunting actually is split between 47 and 42. Try calling the fish and game, and get a land owners list for that area. Call some land owners and see where you can get on. A lot of them won't charge you to hunt their properties, and some may charge a small fee. Like YH said, there's going to be plenty of goats, but don't be expecting anything much bigger the 14".

We are staying in Medicine bow at the Trampas Lodge, you can also try the Virginian Hotel in Medicine Bow.

Here's a buck that was taken off the ranch in area 47.

You can also try the hunter managment areas and walk in areas through the fish and game. Here's a link to a map for area 47, looks like the have a pretty good chunk of land to access. It's an option any how. Scroll all the way to the bottom to see the map, and contact fish ang game for more info. Maybe i'll see you there.
