I can make this one. Who's in or do we wait and see what's open. wtpops is having to much fun chasing them piggies all around by himself :thumbs up2: we gotta get in some of that action.
Oh! I've done a little research about FHL (I didn't know what it stands for at the beginning). Ok, let me verify that I got it right. So, In order for me to hunt on FHL program, I have to submit an application. After that, If my application got pick, I'll be able to hunt on any weekend I want as long as there is still available space. Did I got it right? if so, is it usually busy over there on the weekend?
I have never been there personaly but what I understand from reading about everyones adventures here on the forum is that you can probably expect it to have more hunters on Presidents Day than a regular two day weekend and of course you will also have the forum particapents. With that being said, it appears to be a large place with alot of different areas and options, Muzzleload/shotgun, archery only and rifle areas. I am considering going just to meet some of the guys, sit around the fire and learn from their experience and knowledge of the fort and who knows I may end up being one of the lucky ones to actully take a piggie home with me.
Again I don't know for sure about this but I'm guessing that the advance application is done for a background check and to make sure you are eligble to hunt, not a lottory. You can buy a yearly pass for all types (general) of hunting for $100. You can buy a two day, all types pass (general) for $51 or you can buy a pig only yearly pass for $25.
Hope this helps New Hunter. Good luck and maybe we'll see you there.
You may have to change your handle if you keep researching and hunting the way you are. It's good to see a new hunter be so passionate.
its not a background check it just keeps them from being super busy and holding up the lines of hunters trying to get in and hunt. There is a $20 convenience fee if you go there without sending in the application. You would have to fill it out there and get a picture taken. you save $20 by sending in the application. Word of advice send in your application atleast 3 weeks in advance last time we went out there for new years one of the guys here had to pay extra because they never received his application on time and they were saying it was because the post office is closed. I suggest you have them email you the confirmation letter simply because you know sooner about them processing the application. Its called an application but its just they want to get some information from you. Name, Address, hunting license #. No personal stuff like social or anything if I remember right
They limit the amout of hunters in the areas that are open. Dont forget they do not accept cash; I showed up with a buddy that was wiling to pay the $20 fee but they would not accept his application because he did not have a money order.
Alright! let give it a try. I'm gonna mail-in my app today. And if I don't have to worry about the mid-term exams on that weekend, I hope to meet you guys there. Thanks everyone!
it takes me more than 5 hours to drive up there, so if I can go, I might have to leave right after I got out from work on Friday night (I work the swing shift).
