As almost everyone has said, we don't hunt for cheap meat on the table...
And as boarslayer so well nailed in his post, public land is not the best habitat for wild pigs... We hunt on public land because it's ours to use and for the challenge it offers, especially bow hunting.

What easymoney said is correct. I hunt about 6 times a year between fort hunter liggett, camp roberts and vandenberg air force base for Pig. I go with my brother-in-law every hunt and on average we get two pigs a year out their total between the two of us. Last year we only got one. And that is above average soley because he is active military and trains out on those bases 3 months of the year. We live in southern california and the gas alone is $300 round trip. Every time we go to a private ranch, we pay $600 and each get a pig using our bows. Hunting pig on public land is very hard but very rewarding. My brother-in-law is from Florida, where we go down and can easily drop 5 pigs in a day out on his property and he still loves hunting the public lands. Go hunt Ligett for a weekend and then tell me you wont pay $600 for a private hunt buddy

I'm amused by the OP capping on hunters who do the pay for play, says he finds his own game, then asks for help on where to go to shoot pigs.

Myselft, I save up for private land access. Guided hunts are what you want them to be. My guides grant me land access, unlock gates, and transport me around the ranch. Other than that, it's up to me.

what does a hunt like that tund to run

Go up to the top of the page and there are at least three sponsers who provide hunts like this... And do a back search on posts by others who have gone hunting with these services, they have lots of info, photos and comments...

My advice to the OP is to get the BLM land maps and burn the boot leather. Finding pigs on public land in CA is like hitting the lottery, even for the seasoned pig hunter. If anyone is pulling that off, they aren't going to share it on an internet forum with a cocky stranger.

Only chance you get is if you find a remote spot that holds pigs and if you are the first one to find them. Pigs succumb to pressure very quickly. If a spot gets busy with hunters, the pigs are out of there or nocturnal within a couple of days. I personally have pushed pigs out of places all by myself - bow hunting! They catch on extremely quick if one of them goes missing with a big ass squeal for a goodbye. There is a reason they do so well - they are very smart.

So, this is my two cents. And the explanation why I am one of those dumb MOFOS who gets to hunt 270000 acres of private land every spring. :mooning:

I gotta say most "real deals" I've had the pleasure to meet have always been very humble, modest and respectful. You know, more of the walk the walk kinda guy. That being said, I wish I could be able to be dumber than dirt and hunt on some private land every once in awhile. I've hunted once on private(two pigs) lots and LOTS of time on public(one sighting 400 yards 45 degrees downhill and running). Swing and a miss! Got excited and forgot to compensate for angle and blew clean over him. If I found them I'd never tell!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :)

I can relate cause to be honest I ask alot of questions about where to start my scout... Im not born and raised here. A general area could mean hundreds or thousands of acres ya still gotta put in your work. Also whoever said a thank you or a please go along way... Couldnt of said it better myself

Workin 90 hours a week should mean you could afford to try one of the private land hunts. Unless you are makin minimum wage.

:skeered: Gonna dodge bullets on this thread but, I just moved to California. Rode up to Ice House Reservoir on Monday to see what zone D5 looks like for backpacking and deer hunting. (Got all my info from scouting some of the threads in this forum).

Then today, we rode over to Lake Sonoma; since I found we can hunt hogs on public land there until after March 20th or so. WOW, I was wondering why people were taking there boats to go hog hunting. According to the Park Ranger that I talked to, all campsites are only accessible by boat except for one. To hunt for the hogs,:hog chewing: you need a boat, load up all your gear, go across the lake; then do some scouting around a couple of campsites and then pitch camp for a couple of days. NO HUNTING ON Monday or Tuesday's.

All I can say is, do your homework. There are lot's of good guys on JHO Forum to help you. Watch the adjectives, we are all hunters with different definitions of the word "HUNTER"!! :shootin-rifle:
Good Luck and be SAFE!!

I'm out of Bakerfield too and there are places you see pigs. I wouldn't pay $600 for pigs. I've seen some on public land but not enough to give up the spot to strangers. Once I took a friend to a good pig spot and the next month I saw him there with two other hunters. Within a couple of months there were no pigs and the place was over run with hunters. Never again. I will share info on cheap guided hunts though. Email me if you are interested and I will give you a guide's name who runs them for $350 with a guarantee of seeing pigs and a high success rate. boarhunter67@hotmail.com

I know you guys dont know me but I'm a farm boy from Ne stuck in cali looking for pigs. I'm the real deal Bust my butt and find my own quail, chuckar and deer and have no problem doing it just love to hunt. I'm so sick of these dumber than dirt so called hunters paying 600 or more for a hundred pound pig. It just blows my mind thats not hunting its ruining the sport but anyway I'm in bakersfield if anyone can tell me where to look or try i'd love to go shoot some pigs. thanks for the help

Yeah...born in SoCal, stuck in SoCal, tell me about it. I lived in AZ for a while and am well aware of what other states can provide. But, i have never paid for a private hunt. we have harvested deer, quail, dove, bear and now pigs on public land (pigs on private land but didnt have to pay, just did alot of research) here in SoCal.

You have to invest the time.....something of which i dont have alot of, but i have family that does. you need to build contacts and talk to people. As unpleasant as alot of californias are there are some good people out there that would be willing to share info if you have some to provide too. Thats what my bro and i do with fishing and hunting....find someone who wants to do a hunting exchange, mybe a whitetail hunt if they can put you on pigs. If you live in SoCal its a shame...if you live in NoCal then its a good start.

There is always moving out of SoCal.....not a bad idea.:lol bashing sign:
