I'll be up at FHL this weekend, I drew an elk tag and find myself in YOUR situation, new place to hunt and gotta do homework.

The G-11 this is a good deal this year, basically an any sex tag from august to 31 Dec. That way you can hunt post-rut when the pressure's off and the big boys are out.

As for take, depends what your after. If you just want a legal buck, the take is good. If want a wall-hanger, you'll work for it.

My partner and I filled 4 buck tags in 4 days. Nothing special, but meat on the table.

Lots of deer in the archery-only areas. Lots of deer in shotgun/muzzleloader areas.

If you have all three (rifle, shotgun, bow), bring 'em all. You'll find deer somewhere. The last few years, all my deer have come out of shotgun areas.

I'm just looking for meat in the freezer hehe. So G11 sounds very promising now for either sex :). I think I just found my next zone tag haha.

Spray painting a cave drawing? I seriously doubt that was a hunter. Probably some of the bored kids on base. I grew up on Vandenberg, I know how boring it can get for a teenager.

My Dad told me that 8 has never been open the entire time he's hunted there, since about 1980, with some breaks in between while we were stationed overseas.

I know where there are some cave paintings in 6 (or whatever they call it now). Hope they don't decide they need to "protect" those from us evil hunters.

Is G11 different this year? If I'm not mistaken, last year it was doe during general A zone (after a certain date), or you could use it for late season muzzleloader buck.

To answer the G11 question first: yes, it's different. I'll say it again. Either sex, starting 26 August and running through 31 December. Military, retirees, and DoD.

As to Area 8: I just don't understand why people are so hung up on area 8. It's not that great. You send ten hunters in there and it won't be any different from area 4, just a LOT longer drive to get to. Vandalism is harder to prevent by law enforcement due to this area being so far south. The Wing Commander is under pressure to keep it closed so it's going to remain closed. Period. Deal with it, everybody. If you want to hunt "area 8" go to area 3 and pretend. Seriously. And yes, the Wing Commander hunts down there. So what? His job is hard enough and he's the best friend the hunter has EVER had on this base. I don't begrudge him some time without a phone or radio or staff pestering him.

Thanks 410, for the compliment on the deer. 2008 was an exceptional season, primarily because they closed down doe season in 06 & 08. There were plenty more bucks out there last year and more than one OMG's that we couldn't put put the move on.

Should be another REALLY good buck year. The G-11 basically extends your buck season to the end of the year. Soooo, if your after that wall hanger blacktail and don't want the crowds of the regular season, thats the tag to get.

Of course, you gotta compete with the locals ;)

Screw the locals, I'll be down there this season :). Now I'm more excited about hunting G11 than D7 lol. We all know there's nothing in D7 though.

Get out to the base bx and buy the application soonest. Its a longer process than normal. They hold the applications until they get a bunch and then mail them as a group to Sacramento.

The blacktail herd (pacific hybrid, California mulie or whatever..) is REALLY good.

Even on the busiest day during rifle season, I've never seen more than 60-70 guys hunting at once. And thats spread out over 154 square miles.

Its a really hunting community there. If you've got a deer down in some hell-hole and need help, just ask, folks will give you a hand.

I remember a guy that shot and tagged a monster buck. He put the deer on the gypsy rack and drove back to the game station. Somewhere on the way, the tag came off. Guys from the camp ground searched the road with flashlights until 3 am, found his tag and he was able to keep the deer. Thats what I'm talking about!

E-mail me, and I'll answer any questions you might have.

Thanks for the info, 410. I'm not all that interested in hunting 8, other than the forbidden fruit factor. That and I used to spend a lot of time at the Boat House when I was a kid.

I hope I get to Vandenberg this year. I just moved to NYC and hope to get back for the last week of the season. Best of luck to everyone at VAFB!

Question for 559hog, are you active reserve (duty one weekend a month)? If you are you are able to hunt Vandenberg. However, you are not eligible for the G-11 unless you are on Title 10 orders that activate reservists into active duty status for a specific amount of time.

Weekender21 is correct in his statement about no guns during archery season and if you have an Archery only (AO) tag. The state game wardens do patrol the base every once in awhile and they do work with the base wardens, especially during deer season. Also, one fact most hunters don't know about, from Honda Ridge road south it is Proprietary Jurisdiction. State game wardens also have jusrisdiction and can stop and check hunters. The areas affected are areas 7 and 7A.

RSolo Sir,
Don't feel bad, I got stationed out in TN this spring and did some hunting out to VAFB in June however we saw many sows and pigs but them bigger boars tend to be shy.. Next year for sure..

There is also Fort Campbell a military base, which allows a hunter to shoot one buck per season and two does, however if you hunt with a bow you can shoot a doe a day until season closes without being accounted for each doe.

I believe you can hunt them does in area TA-00 TA-01 TA-03 and TA-07
For military members and family they extended the season up until January 1010 for any members of the Armed Forces.

I guess the best part of Fort CampBell is that you can reserve the area you wish to hunt.

Don't quote me on this, I have not been there but have made some calls and research.

Good luck out the last week of A-Zone the best times for them mature bucks to drop their guards.. I'll be out there myself

RSolo Sir,
Don't feel bad I just recently moved to TN this spring which I missed the pig season when it was really rolling out at VAFB. I did go in June but there was already pressure the months before, saw a few nice boars but they were just a few minutes shy of shooting time. My brother and I saw a few sows with their litter but did not want to shoot them.

There is Fort CampBell which is an Army base and they allow hunting if you are not able to hunt VAFB.

I called and the Wildlife Conservation Officer told me that if I hunt with a bow I can shoot a doe a day and will not count towards the season.
TA-00, TA-01, TA-03 and TA-07 I believe these are the only areas you can shoot a doe a day up until January.

You can hunt (1) Buck and (2) Does per hunting season, for hogs you do not need a tag or anything for them just shoot E'm and take them to the scale.

Also, for military members they have extended the season until January of 1010 and you can also reserve the area where you would like to hunt.

Good luck out in VAFB the last week, I'll try to be there. That's when them mature bucks drop their guards...

I am after that Mr. Wrinkles as Monica calls e'm

RSolo Sir,
Don't feel bad! I just moved to TN this spring, managed to hunt in June, however hunting pressure for pigs was heavy the months before. Saw a few nice boars but were minutes shy of shooting light. Sows well there everywhere along with their litter.

If for what ever reason you can't make it to VAFB there is Fort Campbell which allows you to hunt (1) buck (2) does. Now if you hunt with a bow you're alowed to shoot a doe a day until the season is done.

You can also reserve the the area where you'd like to hunt.

TA-00, TA-01, TA-03 and TA-07 I believe you can hunt them areas with a bow for them does.

For military members there is a special extended hunt in January.

Best of luck in VAFB. I'll be out the last two weeks of A-Zone down at VAFB, am going for that Mr. Wrinkles as Monica seems to name them big mature bucks.

Good afternoon RSolo Sir,
Don't feel bad I got orders to TN this spring, which I missed the pig season when it was really rolling. I went out in June but them bigger boars were just a few minutes shy of shooting light.

If you are not able to make it to VAFB this year you can try out Fort Campbell in KY and TN.

If you hunt with a bow you can shoot a doe a day until the season is done with, special extended hunt in Juanuary for all military members.

Pigs you do not need a tag shoot on site then scale them up.:pig-laughing:

TA-00,TA-01,TA-03, and TA-07 are the areas where you can take out them does each day with a string & stick.:archer green:

Best of luck out at VAFB, I'll try to make it the last two weeks where them mature bucks drop their guards. Am after that Mr. Wrinkles buck that Monica names.:smiley-mouse:

Alan...thanks for the good info!

Good to hear they got rid of the orange requirement for pigs...especially archery! You said they eliminated the 216 for small game/pigs...Am I remembering right that the 216 is the 30 day pass we had to get from the Game Warden Shack before we hunted pigs? That would be real nice if that's out of the way. Too many Friday mornings spent waiting for the GW to issue that pass instead of hunting! I'm assuming the process is still the same for checking in a harvested animal?
