Thanks. He's actually one of the wardens that works on Pendleton, so I would guess we'd stick pretty close to the rules when we go up there.... :roll-wink-green:


Plus, he's gotten some good pigs up there, and knows the land quite well. So it's probably a pretty good hookup I have there if I want to try pig hunting for the first time.....

Oh yeah, there are pigs there! I've been hunting the base for 17 years and have yet to kill one (I'm a horrible pig hunter). The deer hunting is awesome.

It CAN be a good hunt. I wouldn't call it a slam dunk by any means, but there are alot of deer there. PLEASE verify with the game shack that your eligible to hunt there before making the drive. They're pretty sticky about the rules on the base.

Alright, for those wondering about being authorized to hunt on VAFB, here's the paragraph from the new reg dated 1 July 2009:

5.3. Persons authorized to hunt on VAFB, including basic conditions for such authorization:

5.3.1. Active duty, retired, and reserve military members; and prior active duty members and family members of active duty and retired military members who possess appilicable service identification cards as defined in AFI 36-3026(1), Identification Cards for Members of the Uniformed Services, Their Eligible Family Mambers, and Other Eligible Personnel, Chumash Tribal Members, DoD Civilian employees (includes AAFES and NAF), state and federal employees authorized by 30 SW/CC, and retired civil service.

5.3.1.1. Only acitve duty and retired military members may escort one (1) civilian guest to hunt on VAFB. The civilian guest must be a United States citizen and cleared by background check prior to hunting on the installation pursuant to 30 SWI 31-101, Installation Security Instruction.

5.3.1.1.1. The escort will be responsible for the guest at all times while on the installation and must ensure the guest has all appropriate documentation required to be on the installation and to hunt.

5.3.1.1.2. The escort must be within both visual and verbal contact with the guest.


Now, if you still have questions regarding eligibility or G-11 tags, call the VAFB Conservation Office M - F, 0800 to 1600 at 805-606-6804. They are the authors & enforcers of this regulation and can answer your questions.

Whoa, pardner: hold on. There ain't no sure thing to hunting. There are guys that have hunted up here for years and never even SAW a pig. You have to have a clue.

559hog: read the WHOLE thread all over again. The questions you are asking have been repeatedly answered for you. Everything is there for you to get the job done. As to success on Vandenberg--that's up to you and your ability and level of work ethic. If you road hunt, you're toast. If you work hard and hunt smart you have a good chance. Better than hunting the National Forest. But it is no way certain sure.

Soooo, this is a guranteed hunt for me then . Funny how we got so off topic in the pig forum lol. Most of the deer I see are does lol, so I might get lucky and see a buck haha. When does the G11 season start? Best let me know now please . I'm going to sponsor my dad, he's an avid hunter, but doesn't have time to scout and money to go big game hunting, so he only hunts birds and squirrels. This will probably a hunt of a lifetime for him, and his chances at bagging something will be high as well as mine lol, thanks for all the help guys!

Correct me if I am wrong, but your a reservist right? If that's the case then you can't sponsor anyone or get a G-11 tag. G-11 is for active duty and retirees only.

Like I've said in the past, I think people get the wrong idea about Vanderberg from people's posts. It's not a guarantee by any means for deer and especially hogs. I've know many people who have ate the infamous tag soup out there. It's a tough hunt for sure. I may just be unlucky, but I've never had anything come easy out there (or anywhere for that matter). I agree with what 410 said, if you road hunt your probably not going to be to succesfull, and if you don't have good glass forget about it.

I was prior active duty, honorable discharge etc, atiotic-wavin-flagbut I don’t have any current affiliation. Is there any means to be able to hunt VAFB in my current status? I guess I don’t know (don’t think) I can even get any government issued ID card at present. <O

I fairly sure the prior service statement is referring to the VSI/SSB people that got out in the 90s. As the statement below indicates, you need to possess applicable service identification cards - the VSI/SSB people got special ID that this is referring to. If you currently have no GOV ID card, Active, retired, reserve, guard, DoD civilian, Chumash, and so on, you're proabably SOL. Call the Consv. Office and ask. Number is posted throughout this thread.

No, if you are already in possession of two A zone tags, you can't get a G-11 tag. You need to go to the VAFB BX and buy a "Second Deer Tag APPLICATION". Fill it out right there and mark your zone choice as "G-11". Once you have filled out the APPLICATION, give it back to the person helping you. The VAFB Conservation office will then deal with the G-11 applicantions. No CA F&G office or vendor can/will deal with issuing a G-11 tag. There is no exchanging an A-Zone Buck tag for a VAFB G-11 tag. You can also mail in the application, but I don't know the address. Call the VAFB Conservation Office. I think the number has been previously posted.

That means hes getting 3 tags (2 for A zone; and one for G11)? I thought once hes already got 2 tags, then he can't get a G11 tag because he can't exchange it.

It sounds confusing doesn't it? Your allowed two tags total. If you already have 2 A-zone tags, your probably out of luck for the G-11.

The only option available to you is to go to where-ever you got your A-zone tag (Sacramento or local DFG office) and ask them to trade your TAG for your original APPLICATION, and then apply for G-11 with your application. Sometimes they'll do it, sometimes they won't. They certainly won't do it after the season starts.

Once you get your application back, you follow the normal procedure at the BX (in person or via mail), provide tha application, copy of license, ID etc. The BX will give the apps to the base warden, they mail to Sacramento, Sacramento mails you the G-11 tag. The base game warden controls the tag qouta.

It takes quite awhile to get a G-11 because there's two other organzations between you and DFG. That, and the G-11 rules are different every year. Its best to start calling the base warden in April and see what the current years rules will be.

The Fish and Game Dept. is trying to determine the legality of offering the map electronically. My guess is "No".

The hunting is typical: lots of does, a few good bucks, lots of spikes and little hogs everywhere. I saw four going out to the club at 8:45 this morning, in an open hunting area. Go figure.

I just got my G11 tag in the mail (like, five minutes ago), so I'm set!

Congrats on the G-11! Still waiting for mine. According to the BX, I'm number 91.

Your the luckiest guy when it comes to hogs. Other than the babies in the hayfield, I can count on one hand (with fingers left over) how many hogs I seen up there over the years.

I'll be scrutinizing the new zones closely whenever I get to see new map. I'd like to see if the area at the end of watt road is open now. Coupla spots in there I'd like to explore.

We work that over pretty well. The end there is a plover closure and won't open until the end of September. The area around Mod Lake is open as is all of the periphery of old 2A. The center is an archery area now.

I've got news for you: pigs are easy, deer are hard. You just have to be out a lot like us.
